View Full Version : I don’t need a haircut but I’m headed to a Barber

I needed tires & a much needed alignment (after TWS spin).
<O:p</O:p
While considering tires I thought “WWPD” or “WWDD”- I recall “P” runs Hancook- soooooo I says to meeeeself (I think it was internally)- What the H3ll?? Let’s give those a shot.
<O:p</O:p
While it was in the shop, I asked them to check it carefully considering the TWS mud slide. I received a clean bill of health including the suspension, brakes, no underside damage, or leprechaun hookers hanging around.

With the savings (between PS2 and the Hancook tires) weighing me down, and in need of a break from the reality gravity pull- I’ve signed up for a DE at Barber Motorsport in Birmingham later this month. It looks like a new adventure is gathering.
<O:p</O:p
Heck- Michelin is giving a $60 card with the purchase of 4 tires. I received a 2 day track event with the purchase of 4 Hancook tires (thanks P)!- I’m not sure the CFO of the family is impressed…;0

^^ Good to hear you have a favorable experience as well with them- They will get a workout in a few weeks. I told the tire shop that "the instructors" (looks both ways) must be the ones <LOOKS ways both>that are abusing the tires. The tire guy just smiles as he slips my charge slip into the till...

I just did a Tire Rack comparison for of all of the 19" tires for the RS6 and for wet, dry, and road course times I narrowed it down to the Dunlop SP sport Maxx's, Sumitomo's, and Hankook's. I went with the Dunlops for not much more for the RS6 & the Sumitomo's for the tt. Just put the Dunlops on the RS6 on Friday and will be putting the Sumitomo's on the tt today. I'll give you some feedback on them.

Randy,

You burned thru a set of PS2s in a matter of a few months? You got to be kidding!!!! You just got those after the Uhaul adventure last year? right

Randy,

LOL- Actually that was another set since that time- I average about 12K/6 months when some track days are thrown in. This last set lasted 6 relatively hard track days and about 5 months. You could almost see the tire disappear between sessions. I actually still have 4 used ones as spares for the track events. That way if I have a tire issue, I have an resolution. I've considered purchasing a set of track wheels/tires but then I would actually have 3 sets of wheels (OEM, BBS, track). Then there is still the crazy thought of just purchasing a dedicated track car. In the meantime, I guess I'll just keep making the tire guy happy. I"ll see how much of these Hankooks I can burn in a weekend at Barber..

I've heard of a few people experiencing "chunking" with the Hankooks on the track, but for the price, they can't be beat. If I were to be tracking the beast, this would be my ideal setup:

I love the Hankook V12s so far for street use. Cant be beat for the price. Not sure I will ever track the RS6, maybe one day for fun. Most any tire will get destroyed with really aggressive track use with the weight of this car with a driver that knows what hes doing. I had PS2s on my Noble and even they got beat up a bit and very slippery on a 2400 lb car.

I would suggest.. get some used Toyo R888s (can be found from people who dump them after 1 race) that should only have a few heat cycles in them. Put them on your 18s and watch them change your life on the track. Wouldnt use them on the street tho. Even new they arent that expensive, and would be the way to go if you have a stock set of wheels laying around. Tires are the #1 performance boost at the track over any other engine mod. Seems like an unnecessary expense but its SO worth it if you are a track junkie and dont want to blow out your daily driver tires!

Randy,

Since you are going from 19" BBS rims to the OEM rim with slicks, are you going to adjust the KW's for ride height/setting or just leave it?
Also, are the Alcon's gonna fit within the OEM 18"s????

I was at Pure MS today and notices a set of new Kumho slicks.... drool.......

MaxRS6
March 9th, 2011, 23:50
^^ Just came back from the tire shop. The Hoosier tires went on the OEM wheels without issue. There isn't a clearance issue with the brakes as I occassionaly throw the OEM wheels on the car for various reasons. The ride height looks fine and I'm leaving the KWs "as is".

I do have very little clearance (about 1/8 inch) between the tire and upper control arm- Spacers may be required and I am researching options. However; the setup looks sick and I'm looking forward to putting them to use at Barber. The idjuits behind me won't have to dodge chunks..00

I completely spaced your email Randy. If you have a 1/4" of clearance on the inside bead to upright, that may be plenty. Those R6's won't deflect hardly at all. If you're worried about it, try a 5mm, those 12mm's are going to cause rubbing on the outer lip. For reference, I have about 2 sheets of paper clearance between my tire and upright. Never been an issue.

The important thing is the clearance between the inner shoulder of the tire and the upright. You need to have at least 1/8" of clearance, which you should have even with the wider R6's. A 5mm spacer should be more than enough. I don't see any reason to adjust the ride height.

MaxRS6
March 16th, 2011, 03:08

Update- Returned from tire shop- The 12mm made it vedy close upon inspection--However; it did not actually hit the fender upon compressing the car down. The no spacers option sure has it close to the upright. I'm swapping to 5mm spacers to meet in the middle..

I'm not sure is a good idea to track the Beast, 'cause is a very heavy car with a weight distribution leaning heavyly over the front axle, which makes it understeer like a plow on slow corners, unless you're a rally driver, in which case, the TC, tranny, tires and brakes take MORE of a beating, and don't forget that this Audi is a HEAT machine. IMHO, a better alternative is to get into a partnership with the owner of a track car,-small bore to start with- and go from there. In the good old USA there are
literally hundreds of cars and many tracks of which you can avail yourselves on the cheap, have a lot of fun in the process letting your hair down, and, at the same time, improve your driving skills and spare your Beast of the trashing a car gets on the track, and also, you'll appreciate more the virtues of the Beast (that are many) and enjoy it a lot more. Who do you think you are telling me how to treat my car??? I’ll track this monster, trash it, and set it on fire for that matter if I have a bad day. I f&ckin eat the other ‘small-bore’ cars for lunch. I smile knowing at the end of the session they’ll be coming over asking- WTF???

<O:p</O:pWhat is this understeer you speak of?? I turn off the ESP and the car will get the tail out/oversteer quite nicely if you know how to handle it. Just check out my TWS spin video- LOL

<O:p</O:pPut the popcorn away you monkey poo flingers- I’m just joking around. I hear what you saying but I’m having a blast at the moment. I’m not going to break any track records- but it is a lot of fun putting the beans to “Crazy” legally in a relatively safe environment.

If I irked you, i'm sorry, I'm new to the forum and the language, its uses and customs, so I guess I´l end up with a foot in my mouth from time to time, please bear with me. ^^You will have a rocket out there with your mods and should be a blast! I look forward to your posts on track adventures.

I use the Go-Pro cameras. I have two of them. If you record on both cameras at the same time, you can have multiple views of the action (i.e. pic in pic, etc.). They are small and the mounts work very well. I see them stuck everywhere on the cars (roofs, hoods, windows, etc..) and have not yet seen one come off. The videos/resolution are really good and better than you can see on the YouTube format. I have them burned to high definition DVD's and the quality is very sharp and clear on the big screen and it is fun vibrating the house with some of the noises (i.e. screeching tires into mud- LOL).

A downside is that there is no indicator in the back to know it is recording. There is a blinking light in the front. However; from the driver seat, there is no way to tell if it is recording unless you turn the camera towards you, or look from the outside. They have introduced a LCD bacpack extension that snaps into the back and this might solve this minor issue. I have mine set to beep when I hit the record button providing an audible clue. They also have an idiot mode (one push turns it on and starts to record, the next push turns it off). The approximate 2 hour battery life is a downside for some. I just keep a couple extra sets of charged batteries and normally charge it between sessions. I've had no issues with the battery life due to the relatively short track sessions (20 - 25 minutes).

They recently put out a 3D sync cable. You can link two of the go pro camera's together with a sync cable and have 3D. I have not done that and can't speak to the quality.

Jimmy Joe, I've tracked my RS6 at several track events and all your comments are appropriate. (I tracked my A6-4.2 & S6 avant prior to the RS) The rs6 isn't an ideal track car for a lot of reasons. Having said that, it sure is a lot of fun to muscle around the track. And people are always coming up after a track session to inquire what just passed them. It's also fun to be able to drive a load of track rats to lunch with the a/c turned on. Gotta love the car for all it's flaws.

I've been at the track a couple times with Randy/Max and he's a very relaxed, fun guy.

Keep Smiling, Jim

Oh My- What a absolutely beautiful track and facility!!! It was too much fun today until a coolant leak appeared. Fortunately-developed on last session so I got a full day in. . I'll have some vids for those that need them when I get back in a couple of weeks. What a blast!!

The tires made suuuuuuchhhhh a difference..The heavy beast can turn in with some authority- Jeeeepers- put the brakes to Crazy and it will definitely slow down in a hurry. Took a couple of sessions to work out to stop braking sooo early and it was a lot fun having confidence to brake later. Thanks again to everyone for the input and a special shout out to Pat that took several harassing calls and emails...;0

Why oh why is this hose up against this pully thingy making Crazy bleed?????? Got back, pulled the undershield off, and looky looky whats got my knooky... I'm gonna try to repair it tomorrow morning and see if it will hold up

Glad to hear that your new setup is working for you. That hose feeds the axillary cooler, didn't you just have them replaced? Looks like they were routed incorrectly. Looks like a hoot! I don't mind the emails and phone calls at all, it's fun living vicariously through you on tracking the beast.

Yep- all of this was just done when they replaced the radiators. I see an interesting discussion in my future about such repair..

edit: I look forward to the Pat adventures

Well, at any rate, just cut the hose and put a 5/8" hose splice in for now, and zip tie it down to the oil cooler line. Let the dealer deal with it after you've had your fun. :)

Sounds like a plan- I'm headed to a shop that opens at 9:00 as they have a lift. Thanks for the advice and I"ll pass it on to the tech that will have the task. I'll be reading the paper and having a coke to get the day started..;0

^LOL- I feel better about being a decade maker...;0

Pat: Thanks again- The coolant splice is exactly what we went with and it worked out great. It held up to the track and isn't leaking a drop.

When the Firestone tech looks at the car with it on the lift- I point out the culprit leaking source. He just shakes his head and asks "What monkey put this hose in??? I couldn't help bust out laffing and tell him "A high dollar Audi tech". The guy looks like a shade tree mechanic with cig and all while going about his work. However; he does a great job and double checks his work to ensure it would hold up at Barber- I made it worth it to him in $$$$ for a well earned tip.

I make it make to the track around noon and ran 4 sessions as they allowed me to run in a couple of groups to make up for the missed morning sessions, and the car ran without issue. The tires solution worked out great and made the fun even mo better. The grip and stopping power was beyond what I expected and added a lot to getting the car around the laps.

I'll say it again- Barber is remarkable. The place is immaculate with sculptured landscaping and art. Trash cans are placed 25 feet part and the place doesn't have a cigarrette butt to be found on the grounds. Personnel constantly maintained the place, and kept an eye out for a blade of grass to grow 10mm out of spec. Seriously- it seemed as if they stood by with clippers in hand. Heck- I made a special effort to keep all of my sh$t organized and neat in my paddock area. The place has that kind of effect on a person.

With that said- Barber is a relatively tight track with little room for error unless you want to meet a wall. I kept the car on the track surface this time and had no off-track adventures. I tried to keep it at about 85% for a nice comfortable safety margin as I enjoyed the weekend. If any of you all have the chance to experience Barber- I say do it!!!!!!

I'll be back to home base in about 10 days, and will post some vids for your entertainment and critical analysis of the Arkie. Prepare the bat sh$t for flinging.

I've tracked my RS6 at several track events
I've been at the track a couple times with Randy/Max and he's a very relaxed, fun guy.

Back at you Jim and I've always enjoyed our time at the track together. You have always provided pearls of wisdom of the track, and offer fun conversation to kill some of the time between sessions. You know how to rip the beast around the track, and I always enjoy watching and learning from more experienced/skilled drivers.

End of the day- I was literally about the last one out- I ran till the track went cold. Car is loaded up with 4 tires/wheels, jack, tools, etc. It earned its' keep this weekend...;0

This is my first track session at Barber. It was a little wild just going on out to the track without ever having seen it and learning the feel of the tires at the same time. This is the entire first session uncut version.

I can only say this....

Watch out idjuits! You're going to get a cramp in your lumbricals and end up in the ditch.

Better check the tires on that P car. Looks like you're riding on bricks and after the spin they are more square than round anyways.

Did Skribe paint that dash? What was that stuff again? Undercoating?

Thanks Jimmy!

One more for fun with a little bit of rain. It was my first time on track tires on the wet. Passed a few and got passed by a few. The lambo owner/driver was a nice guy and we enjoyed some conversation. He came up and wanted to know what the h#ll kind of motor was in my car. ;) I gave him compliments back as his Lambo is a beautiful car and it was great to see it up close.
