Piech is correct on Fiat's wasting efforts on the Alfa-Romeo brand when unit sales for CY 2010 were slightly greater than 100.000. Seat, the least successful of the VW mass market brands, managed to shift over three times the level that Fiat was able to accomplish. Recall that Fiat's alliance with General Motors several years ago focussed on Alfa-Romeo, not on the other Fiat product lines, and that Walter de Silva led the design renaissance at Alfa-Romeo before he moved to head Volkswagen's design group.

Rebadged Chryslers are not Alfa Romeo worthy.

FIAT is a basket case thanks to Italian labour laws and Italian unions. Marchionne has even said he wants to relocate FIAT's headquarters outside Italy to get round these problems. Of course, that's never going to happen. Despite Marchionne's brilliance, FIAT will struggle long-term. Its brands are good, but the quality of its premium models still isn't on a par with that of the Fatherland. Can Marchionne succeed with Chrysler? Look what happened to Daimler-Chrsler. The question is at what point will FIAT start to sell assets like Alfa-Romeo? Selling now would yield a greater price than later, although a scrap among the bigger players to lay hands on Alfa could easily jack-up the price.

The bottom line has to be that VW acquiring Alfa would result in dramatically better products, sales and profitability. Piech is right on that score. Will he get Alfa before he meets his maker? Tough call.
