Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone has a busted C5 RS6 torque converter they are willing to sell...

I'd like to get mine upgraded but if I first have to tear the car down, then ship it across the ocean and wait for it to come back to put it back together I am getting too short on time :(

I am thinking of going with 517 trans for the upgrade.

welcome to the forum!

Can you put your location in your signature so others know where you are?
Also any details on your RS6?

Edit: Belgium

Cheers. I already posted in the sticky thread with a pic of the car :)

Will work on the signature!

In this case I am looking for someone preferably in the 'states who could send the TC straight to the shop after I pay them via paypal or whatever. So my location (europe) need not be problematic for shipping :)

You may want to give Andre with http://aceconverter.com/ a call. He sent me a rebuilt TC before I returned my core. He will be receiving my core back at his shop today. If he already has a customer waiting for a rebuild on it; he may be able to track down a different core for you to purchase and have shipped to his shop.

That's the plan. My workload after taxes:
Tb/wp/ps pump/mafs/o2's/ and if I can, tc/flush with bnd.

Thanks. When "we" have tranny problems, is it the tranny or the converter? Is the converter the weak spot, and the fix, or is the tranny itself the turd, and still need to be rebuilt when you have problems, along with a new TC?

other than the $424 I had about $30 shipping each way. Andre told me his TC rebuild for the RS6 would handle over 900 lbs ft torque. ACE Converter and Edge Racing are the same company. ACE was set up for import cars. Edge Racing has a good reputation on the domestic side and the TC has no idea if it is going in a domestic or import car.

Thanks, but let me rephrase the question: When do you think you need a rebuild? Obviously when it slips. When you get the dreaded code? If I just do the converter now, will I be OK for the long run? Or does the tranny/valves body need attention too? Am I to understand that there is no real HP "upgrade" for this tranny? Does Tozo just rebuild to stock specs and the converter takes care of the rest or is there a high performance upgrade done to the tranny/valve body?

My understanding, based on what I learned spending a weekend watching Tozo replace my TC, is that the TC is the weak spot in the ZF 5HP24A transmission used in the RS6. This transmission goes back to the mid 90s. While it was fine for the lower powered cars of that day it can't handle the power of the RS6. A seal in the TC starts to leak causing a loss in pressure. With the loss in pressure the TC doesn't always lock up which causes the transmission fluid to overheat and burn. Bad fluid, TC debris from slipping and not locking up, and excess heat are all enemies of the transmission. A properly working torque converter goes a long way to eliminating future transmission trouble.

I'd say it is TC rebuild time when you get the dreaded code. Fluid changes etc are a waste of money at that point. When Tozo replaced my TC he also replaced the fluid and filter. The transmission wasn't opened up. There is a limited amount of room in a transmission. Upgrading the transmission itself during a rebuild is unlikely - only so much material will fit into the space available.

Thank you for the info. This is basically what I heard. The TC really isn't "bad", it just has a seal that is weak and "can't" be replaced. Again, kind of ridiculous of Audi. So you're forced to buy a new converter when this seal goes bad. Fortunately the TC cost is reasonable for thie RS6, comparatively speaking.

I agree the cost of the TC isn't a big deal if you go aftermarket. I haven't checked, but heard the OEM TC is over $1000 and it sounds like you're putting the same problem right back into the transmission. The killer on the TC failures is the many hours it takes to swap one out.

Seems like decent piece of mind, once it's done though. I've paid over $1300 for a good converter too.

By the way, does anyone know the approx. outside dimensions of the torque converter?

Cheers! That helps a lot for figuring out shipping.

I logged the TC behaviour earlier and I think its pretty definitive I need a new one :(

I remember when i had my Grand national i paid $2500.00 for a Niel Chance convert but it worked! So for under $500.00 for a RS6 one is a Deal!

Yep...bought 2 Precision converters. One for my late TT 69 Camaro, and one for my Turbo 98 Vette. Both were between $1200-$1500. $500 is a bargain, might buy 2 just to have one ready to go.

These guys are local to us Mike and have done Rs6 TCs ; they can upgrade them too...about $550.

I think Brian's guy Eric will rebuild them for around $450 also...
