So Ive only had Renn for a short time and Ive been working hard to bring her back up to her full glory :rs6kiss:

Right before my Son was born a power steering leak developed out of nowhere, forcing me to dig into her right at the most inconvenient possible time.

This is what I found:
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_h5Iga9U_z78/TOqk2539cpI/AAAAAAABCfU/bOcUnbBgKbI/s800/IMG00035-20101119-1944.jpg

Those are the high pressure line that run from the power steering pump to the power steering rack, the top one is the one I removed and the bottom one is the new one I installed.

I dont know what crack-smoking mechanic did this horrible molestation but the banjo connection on the pump was 180 degrees off and the steel hardline had been bent as well as the "flexible" piece being literally folded in half.

Because of the "creative" new routing just about everything else on that side of the car was off, the intercooler was sitting forward knocked off the top stand and it made getting any tools in there a nightmare.

The good news is the issue has been rectified, finally.. and I went ahead and did the timing belt/waterpump/serpentine while I was in there and since I had no idea how long it had been like this I threw in a new ps pump to attempt to nip any possible failure in the bud.

I was pleasantly surprised how smoothly the repairs/maintenance went, I was starting to get worried I may be in over my head being a DIY RS owner but it went well and after taking my son for his first ride in a german car yesterday I got my confidence/mojo back :revs:

Next up, winter tires, brake pads, tranny flush, oil change and repair that damn abs module..

oh ya, here is the new dad and future audi racer, Charles.. (His recaro seat is in the mail, i'll post pics with him and it soon)

Any RS6 owner willing to tackle a timing belt job on the beast is good in my book. Nice work.

How did you set the preload on the drivers side idler roller? There is a specific process to balance both lower rollers.

Congrats on both achievements.

Actually I'll admit I cheated a little, I had a trusted independent Audi mechanic come over to the house and actually install the belt/tensioners in exchange for some beer... I really didn't want to mess that part up and I have yet to purchase a bentley for this, I did tear it all down and put it back together with the help of some friends.. I think I could handle the task the next time, but I'd still probably call him over to observe/check my work.

Over the years Ive kinda formed an unorganized car club out of my garage.. luckily those guys were there for me when I needed them the most.

Still well done. I just wanted to be sure that preload was set properly.

Working for beer is the best exchange for friends and any number of projects.

Could the power steering line have been bent from a previous engine pull when it got caught or was not disconnected?

Anyway, job well done with the repairs and the handsome son.

I doubt it, would be a valid theory if it was remotely attached to the ps pump in the same manner.. It dont look like it was an accident, at least I would be amazed if it was an accident and went un-noticed.

I am guessing someone had trouble getting it back on and kinda made it fit.. perhaps the metal line got bent/tweaked out of shape and they just couldn't figure out how to get it back on. It wasent exactly simple getting the new line either, the bolt is not tapered and you have to work against its own tension.. with the hose 100% right I still struggled (alone) to get it lined up perfect to drop the bolt in... once installed on both ends I was able to take it off and put it right back but that first time was a pain getting everything perfectly aligned in such a tight space.

I really dont know what transpired to cause this, probably for the best.. I am just glad I found it, fixed it and had a good chance to look everything else over for simular mistakes.. I feel pretty confident its put back together the way a german engineer intended it to be.

Oddly enough I was installing a car seat and found 3 items from previous owner, a golf pencil, an envelope with name/address and inside is a confirmation for some sort of jesus retreat, and last but not least was a recipt from drug store for what I have to assume was Viagra :lovl: Funny how much you can learn from someone by the crap that falls behind the seat :)

Add the three found items and you have an advid golfer that is looking to get laid at a religious retreat. Smarmy!

I will be attempting IC swap next week, at friends with a lift....but what really warmed my heart in your picture was all the spent butts on the ground, LMAO. I am smoker so I am not poking fun in a bad way

the garage is the designated smoking area now that we have a newborn, and it sure didn't help going out there and seeing my audi in pieces.. I admit without a bentley I probably smoked a pack scratching my head trying to find out what to take off next. Dont worry tho, I dont allow smoking inside Renn.

When I cleaned out the garage afterwords, I swept out enough cig butts and beer bottles U'd think I was running an underground speakeasy. ;)

Renn as in Renn Sport.. I know I am not the only one who names & sexs' his vehicles. Its not weird to consider them part of the family, is it?

Nope, perfectly natural...

My first car was a 1986 Mustang GT 5.0 5sp - no a/c, no power locks/window, only power steering and a right foot! It was named "My Lil Mule" just like in "Romancing the Stone"
I have yet to name the Rocket Ship 6...
