View Full Version : Thoughts on my $10 charge air pressure tester???

So ever since I attempted to contribute my GIAC logs at WOT, I caused a boost leak.

Here's what 10 bucks got me today.

3" test plug and schrader valve with male 1/4 NPT end

Some JB Weld for good measure

This paired with another plug

It seems like I'm hearing some hissing just about everywhere, but am using too much pressure I think.

I'm probably going to use a hand pump instead of the compressed air chuck.

I didn't feel like waiting for the JB Weld to dry and also had some pin hole leaks around the threads.

I'm thinking that I'm going to enlarge the holes and properly tap out some 3/8 NPT threads with a new valve on one plug and a pressure gauge on the other.

I'm also thinking of getting some smaller ones for the IC's as I've got a few I need to pressure test anyway.

I tightened the IC clamps and still have the boost leak. It's somewhat intermittent and at times it sounds like I've got Airwolf under the hood. The howl sounds like it's closer to the firewall, so I'm thinking I might have a bad o-ring on one of the hard outlet pipes.

Any thoughts on my setup?

Back to the boost leak. I re-checked and tightened the clamps on the hoses coming directly off the turbos. Out for a test drive to check for Airwolf.

Car is in Sport mode. All seems good. Not getting stuck at any rpms or no fluctuations with the rpms during acceleration. No Airwolf howl from the back of the motor.

Turn around and put the car in Drive mode. It's baaaacccckkk.

Long story short. Bad TC. So, my spare 01E rebuild commences this week.

I've already bought the metal slave cylinder and SS braided slave line from USP.

Also, for added inspiration, I found an OEM B5 RS4 air leather shift knob to match the steering wheel. A bit of cart before the horse, but . . .

I might try to do some more logs before it comes apart to see what else I can break. Consider it a bit of mechanical Darwinism to avoid having to fix things after the build up.

I'll most likely start a detailed 6 spd conversion thread once I get underway.

Wowza and look forward to seeing your progress. Good luck!

More on that howl your talking about.

High pitch? Sounds like an air leak. Both sides of car? Perhaps my new TC is already failing??
