Appears that the diff seal is leaking gear oil. Boot looks split as well.

Anyone know of any web pages showing this operation? Couldn't find it here.

BTW, called the dealer and they gave me an est. of $600. Sound right?

Thanks.

I initially thought that my inner CV boot was bad on my S6. Note the mess.

Turns out the seal at the output flange was bad because the inner bearing was bad. Tons front/back & up/down slop in the flange.

My diff seal/cover wasn't leaking though. I'm not sure how tough of a job this would be for the DIY'er so $600 sounds fair.

Also, the inner CV is a sliding mechanism that technically requires special tools to separate. I was able to carefully do it myself w/o them, though.

I'm a 6 speed now, so I've got a set of front axles I can sell if you need them ;)

If you can wait until I get home, I can print the operation from Alldata to PDF and email it to you. It's pretty straight forward though, assuming your pinch bolts choose to cooperate.

It is possible to remove the front half shaft without removing the upright, pinch bolt, etc. It's not fun though.

LOL! Hey I just assumed one of those responses was Dave's. He gets alerts on his mobil whenever someone asks a question here. ;)

P.S.
Yes Pat, please shoot me that when you get the chance. Much appreciated.

I'm sorry Scott, Alldata does not list the procedure for removing and reinstalling the axles. It's pretty straight forward though. Remove the 6 (M13?) triple square bolts from the inner axle flange, remove the outer axle bolt, remove either the lower or upper two ball joint pinch bolts, remove the outer tire rod end pinch bolt, rotate upright out towards you and remove axle out the back. Replace outer axle bolt as it's torque to yield. Torque to 190Nm plus 180 degrees.
