No, it is the highly engineered OEM pads for a top-of-the-line 2003 RS6. You know!
That "Truth thru technology" moniker...
They can engineer the hell out of a the quattro system and the 4.2 TT motor but use freeze dried monkey $hit for brake pads

Alas- No vids as the camera had issues.
<O:p</O:p
My RS6 was the only Audi at the Texas World Speedway Driver's Edge event. There were about 100 participants with the usual suspects including a lot of Miatas, Porsches, several Z06s, a GTR, Viper, a Radical (pretty cool), Stangs, and a few BMWs. The car drew a lot of interest with some that knew about the car, and others that wanted to “know more”. All I can say is that our Beast really stands out and is a special unique car as we all know. Multiple comments were made about the sound and the Milltek growl. I estimate at least 25 other drivers/instructors came over to give it the look over and inquire.
<O:p</O:p
I had a great instructor David Johnson. He drove it around the track for the first 3 laps. His first comments out of the hot pits were “Oh Yeah!” The power torque, brakes, and steering were given compliments, and at the end of our first session he states “This is gonna be fun!”- And it was. David provided great instruction and advice on the track line and car control.
<O:p</O:p
I let a GTR owner drive my car in an off track area, and he was genuinely impressed with the power and performance. He just kept saying “Wow” as he was giving it some beans during his test drive. He was surprised during our track sessions that my car had been keeping on his tail, and then around him when the point by was given during our sessions. After the event, the instructor in the GTR found me while I saying my good byes to the event coordinator. The instructor stated he had come across the parking lot to tell me how well the RS6 was “on line” and going crazy fast in the curves and straights. The kind Kudos produced the requisite grin.
<O:p</O:p
OMG- I wish I had vids to share. Last day and last session, David gives good advice to me stating we should dial it back to about 90% as this is the session that usually has the most issues (drivers tired, cars stressed, etc..). So we have had an uneventful session and are in the final minutes. I’m going down the front straight counter clockwise at about 135 (Earlier I had been reaching around 140 – 145 on the straight). I am setting up to dive off the front straight onto the apron for left hand Turn 1 that provides straight line braking to setup into the left hand Turn 2. I tap the brake on the end of the front straight, turn in, straighten out, and then start to apply heavy braking for Turn 2. Oh SH!T- NO BRAKES at about 120. I realize it early and say out loud to David “I have no brakes, No brakes, No brakes at all”. A true “OH SH!T!” moment. Our options are to take it straight out into the grass (with the potential hazards), or try to carry on. David says “rotate the car” so I turn towards 2 at approx 115 (normally I had been hitting this at about 75 – 80). I rotate the car and Dave says give it throttle. The throttle comes on and I can feel the front actually catching grip (phewwwww!!!!!!) as I’m working on hitting the apex correctly so I can utilize as much track as possible. The car rips around Turn 2 taking every single millimeter of the Turn 2 track out area. The car comes down to a reasonable speed as I lift off, gear down for Turn 3, and we take her in safely. David and I get back and relive the heart pounding story with a few others. David’s instruction and the Quattro system earned their salt!
<O:p</O:p
I have so many other good memories and stories for the two days but thought I’d share the most interesting. It was Too Much Fun!

Did you figure out the brake issue?

MaxRS6
October 18th, 2010, 17:37
I think it was heat related as they started working after cooling down.

I ended up with a small nail in one of my tires so I took it to a tire shop near the track before I headed home. When they took the wheel off they looked at the pads. They stated the pads had been subjected to some serious heat. I can't remember the word he used to describe it but said he had only seen that one other time. I am taking it to a local shop to have my street pads put back on. The track pads was a new set of Carbotech XP10 on the front that are now toast. I'll take some pics of the Carbotech pads when they swap the pads.

It would be nice to find out the root cause. While it was fun since it worked out- I'd rather get my thrills another way..;0

Yes, but how are the rotors?

MaxRS6
October 19th, 2010, 15:12
Rotors are still good according to the tech. There are some cracks. I've spoken to StaSis about the cracks before and sent them pictures when another set I had developed cracks. StaSis stated "This surface cracks are normal, and appear as the rotor goes through various heat cycles. These are cracks induced from thermal loading. This is normal. Note to customer: The stress cracks are what to check for, I can’t see any from the pictures provided. Stress cracks usually propagate from the inside of the rotor outwards, and sometimes will crack through the thickness of the rotor ring"

I'd be happy to post up a picture of the rotor if you would like a look at their current condition.

Rotor pics

Those are new Project Mu street pads. They are the best street pads I have used with the Alcons. No squeak, little dust, and nice stopping on the streets. However; they do cost about $250/set.

MaxRS6

Here is pricing info I received from StaSis. I actually paid a little less than the below. The current rotors have been on the car for about a year (20K miles) and endured 3 track events.

$350 for new hats
$750 for the new rings
$110 for new hardware

I heard some squealing of tires/AWD drift?!?!?

How as that transition from banking to flat on turn 1-2? It looks rough...
Also, not to be critical of your driving, but what is with the different lines between the ones you took and say, the Lotus?
Some of the lines the Lotus took looked either wide or got in there too hot or trying something different.

Some of those curbs looked NASTY!

Some of the lines the Lotus took looked either wide or got in there too hot or trying something different.

Some of those curbs looked NASTY!

The transition was very fun/exciting/heart stopping at times at speed. There were several different lines (low, middle, or high to come off the front straight). I experimented with each and it was a hoot coming off the straight at about 140-145, then hit heavy braking, and then rolling back into the throttle around Turn 2. It was the most exciting part of the track for me- especially when the brakes decided to leave the party. 00

Different cars/different drivers take different lines. On the track, you don't want to just follow the guy/gal in front of you (i.e. different car/setup, experience level, they may not know what the heck they are doing, etc...). You want to take your own line and stick with it if possible. Watch how I just zoom up their tails on Turn 6 (i.e. where I catch up to the Mustang GT after I get around the Lotus). I was easily riding the tails of the more nimble cars by being on my line and exiting out of the turns correctly. The vids show the start up laps and the laps got much faster as the session progresses.

The first lap of each vid was a warm up throw away lap under yellow so no passing. The vids are very short tid-bits unfortunately. My instructor and other instructors on the track were very complimentary of my lines during the two days. Generally, I was taking it in a little tighter than most, and a little later apex to bust out of the Turn with throttle. The later apex is a little safer line and allows the four wheel drive to rip out of the turn.

Some of the curbs were certainly things you did not want to hit. If hit- they certainly could jar the car (clears throat- at least that is what I was told...shifts eyes).

You made up like a football field in one corner on that Mustang. It was a thing of beauty. That guy must have crapped his shorts to see your bumper in his mirror in one corner.

L8apex is the only way to fly. Rookies need not apply as they dont have the patience to pull it off. Just the sight of the corner makes them want to turn in and that is wayyyyyy to early.

Great videos Max; thanks for sharing. I liked your lines vs the lotus and Mustang. How did you like TWS compared to Heartland? Looks like a fun layout. Was the surface as rough as it looked? Whats the story with you and brakes? Can't remember, don't you run Pagid blacks on the track? As Dhall said, Late apex is key for heavy quattro cars.

Wagner intercoolers went into my car Monday. Euro headlights arrived Tuesday. Body shop will finish up the front end that had the deer alteration by mid-week.

Although our weather has been SPECTACULAR, I can't wait to be out of the 325 conv. Jim :)

MaxRS6

TWS was actually a blast. It has more room than Heartland and pretty good safe run off areas if needed. There were some relatively bumpy areas but looks worse in the video than in person. Most of it was a relatively pretty good surface. The Driver's Edge group organizers were well organized and very hospitable. With that said- Heartland is always great and the Audi group always fun.

I'm still not sure why the brakes decided to leave the party. When we made it back to the garage, the heat coming off the front rotors was incredible. I am running the Alcon setup and had new Carbotech XP 10 front pads, EBC reds in the rear, Motul RF600 brake fluid that had just been changed. I think I'll put some better pads on the back for next time (the back pads were still relatively okay after the two days). I'll certainly keep a better eye on the pads during my next track event. I'm open to suggestions, and I'm planning on discussing further with a local brake shop.

Good to hear your ride is nearing restoration! Look forward to the pics

LOL- The BMW was toast at the next passing zone. The vette was actually very fast as the owner had "worked on it" all summer with fruitful results. He was surprised that the big old 4 door RS6 was able to run with him. He was able to pull away some on the long straight as he pounded on it.
