Thanks to a PPI by LIRS6, I managed to purchase an RS6 for future manual conversion.

Thanks much Jason. I owe you one or three.

My wife flew to JFK and took delivery today. I honestly don't think she'll let me have it long enough to put it up on stands and start tearing it down.

Anyway, I'm away on business and she texts me a picture of a GIAC flashloader that was in the glove box. I was under the impression that it had an APR chip.

So does anyone have any GIAC experience? How can I tell if I have all the programs, etc.? Can I call GIAC with VIN or any info from the ECU, etc? Wonder if I'll be able to copy the ECU using my KWP flash tool?

Congrats Steve, best of luck with it. Just promise me a ride when you complete the conversion, and we'll call it even.
Keep us all posted on your project.

Thanks again Jason.

I got home tonight and took it for a test drive. It's quite the rocket.

There are some issues with the car, but nothing I can't handle.

I think it was a good move.

steve,

if you dive into the manual conversion, please keep a running total on parts. i'd like to get a better idea of total cost.
my tranny is starting to piss me off.

on the GIAC - plug it in and turn the car to all accessories (do not start) and press read, all of the ones you have will blink and the one the car is running will be solid. To switch it just press the one you want and wait a few seconds then press read to double check. I just have boost and stock. The TCU flash is permanent and I have questions regarding the tranny behavior, will PM you later today.. I tried to get some feedback on the GIAC ECU/TCU on this forum but didnt have any luck.. Hope this helps you

Just for clarification the Flash is not "permanent", if the dealer reflashs it to stock it is gone; however, depending if GIAC has the records their website states they will reflash with what you bought.

Good luck with GIAC. Mike at Hoppen found a GIAC chip in the TCU last Winter when I sent it in for a MTM chip. I tried to find out if my ECU was also chipped by GIAC. After a few calls, I gave up. I couldn"t get them to respond to calls or e-mail.

Is there any way you can temporarily get your hands on a flash loader switcher doo hickey? If you hit read, then that might tell if you've got something?

On another note, a little birdie told me that the TCU from the earlier Tiptroincs (say in all the C5 and B5 models) only receive info from the ECU and don't really tell the ECU anything. More or less it's a one way communicaion. Can anyone confirm this? You see what I'm getting at here in my quest for a manual conversion???

Steve, I know your tackling things a little different from the guy Adam in Southern Cali at www.ravenms.com (http://www.ravenms.com) but have you guys talked about this? I remember his post about the car running good and he did a follow up on Quattroworld or Audizine a week back or so and said things were still running great.

We have an ongoing debate about the GIAC flash on the RS6.

We need to compare apples to apples and get the questions answered once and for all. But nobody wants to send me data logs. Here is a link on how to compare apples to apples. The GIAC did not fare very well in this test.

I do understand that they've got a running 6 speed. I'm not up to speed on if it's able to pass OBD inspection, etc. Can you link to the threads with the update? I'm thinking forward to the ECU mods that will make this a 'turn key' kit.

Basically do all the mechanical conversions and then reflash the ECU (or most importantly certain aspects of the ECU code only) and start rowing. No CEL's, no PRNDS on the cluster, maybe even having this pop up would be super nice, too:

<img src="http://www.kendrish.com/galleries/S6/build/misc/6MT_Rbld/cluster_clutch.JPG">

As noted above, only being able to flash certain parts of the ECU will enable all the APR, GIAC, Viper, Jim Wolf, Dinan, Revo, Joe's garge, etc. tunes to remain and work in harmony with and not be affected by the conversion.

So who is willing to do this?

It has to be done on the same car. I have a spare stock ECU and now also have a GIAC standard tune ECU. I'm willing to fork them out when my car is up on blocks for the conversion. Yu'd have to see if the dealer can align them to your immobilizer with out reflashing the GIAC, etc and then possibly revert them back to my immobilizer when done. Otherwise, I'd be trailering my car to the dealer. Unless it's true that you indeed can remove the immobilizer for the ECU. I'll check with a contact about this.

Anyway, I digress. So who would like to do this and donate the dyno time, drive time and have the car for the baseline.

Even though I don't really care about who's tune is the best, I'm all for it. The only reason I've got a tune is because it came with the car.

Steve,

I have just basic questions on the GIAC that could help some RS6 folks. If you simply log your car first it could confirm some points.

Can you log 31,115 and 3 it would answer many questions. If you study this Audizine thread and look at the GIAC fueling table on log 31 you will quickly see the difference between the GIAC and APR. My theory is that GIAC does the same thing with the RS6.

One data log on your car will support that theory. Because the fueling will directly enable the turbo to reach proper boost and power. Without the proper fueling....you can simply see that the turbo is not able to reach boost and lag is the result.

Busy weekend mixed with bad weather prevented me from getting much done.

I'll try and get to the logs today if family or customers don't pull me away.

They must be pretty confident as they, Raven, sold the RS6 Tippy Trans from that car, IIRC...
Mark picked it up...

Maybe the ECU side isn't as difficult as once thought.

I've been told that there's very little, if any, communication from the TCU to the ECU.

So not having the auto trans will not affect driveability, but I need to see this for myself.

As Bob Barker says.... wait... that is Johnny.... Come on Down!!!!
Besides the weather is good...kinda..

No. I mean do the conversion on my own car and see for myself.
