So I am working on an RS6 trans and it has a dent on the pan.

the Allen wrench in the drain plug supposed to be parallel with the pan.

It had the correct filter,

but with the dent it got close to the bottom of the pan. You can see the debris ring created by the filter pickup pipe.

So cutting the pickup pipe shorter could be a life saver.

I had the same dent in the pan issue when I received it back from IPT. IPT had strapped the tranny so tight to the pallet (it had actually broken one of the pallett slats) it had dented the pain and shoved the pipe into it. Made a god awful racket at initial start up and discovered the issue. Stupid Audi tech thought the tranny was toast and had not been rebulit properly. After discussion with IPT tech, new pan resolved the issue.

Very good info

Do you have any pictures from a couple feet back to see the general location better? The pics are too close.

Damnit! You have me worried sick! As I said before, the last person to change the filter on my car was Audi, I since then have only flushed the fluid. Ever since the dealer changed my TC and fluid/filter, I've noticed that the car for some reason favors higher gears, almost as it it had inadequate line pressure to hold lower gears and correctly downshift. I've had it back to them twice, and they stated that everything was normal. Looks like I'm ordering some more fluid and another OEM filter, though I'm starting to think it may be too late for this gearbox.

No I don't. The pan is between the down pipes. When you put an Allen wrench in the drain plug it has to be parallel to the gound or the top of the pan.

Got it.

So if the pan gets dented any small amount the pickup tube is sucking off the bottom of the pan and volume is limited.

If the pan is no dented and the allen is level you should have no problem with the pickup tube.

I am checking my pan tonight.

Pat, did you say something about my pan looking deeper than normal?

Nah, I was mistaken. When I saw the extra depression in the center, I didn't remember mine having the same feature. It indeed does. I drink.
