View Full Version : Possible valvetrain noise? Cause?

I took a test drive today in my search for a guinea pig beast. 130k miles on the ticker.

When revving the engine from idle to say 4k-5k rpm, I heard what sounded like valves tapping for a quarter of a second or so maybe at around 2k rpm? I could only hear it with the hood open and with my head maybe within 5 feet or so of the engine.

If the car was quickly or normally revved up to 5k or so, I heard it. The only time I didn't hear it was when the car was slowly brought up to 5k.

The best way I could describe it was a quick valve tapping noise (not very loud) that only lasted for a quarter of a second in the middle of the revving procedure.

I first thought that it could be the cam adjusters.

Any thoughts on this? Diagnosis? Normal? I'm curious.

I was surprised at how clean the car was for 130k miles, but this noise was the reason I gave a low but fair offer and ended up walking in the end.

I second your notion of a faulty cam adjuster.

BTW, I VAG'd the car and both the engine and trans had no codes.
