so the Oxygen Sensors before and after the CAT CAN BE REPLACED without an engine pull???

Aronis
August 29th, 2010, 01:13
So what was the process, I see the engine support, and I am thinking you removed some big cross member from below?? By the way, how much weight can the fenders hold??

I too am curious about the position of the jack stand, it look like close to the normal jack point for the front ones, but the more rearward set?

DHall1
August 29th, 2010, 02:19
This could mean another 30-50hp put down to the wheels.

Flow is good when you turn up the wick with more boost.

Primary cats kill flow and help create more backpressure.

Backpressure kills boost.

More boost, more flow, more power.

Dammit

Alright, still hard at work here, but I took pics of the jack stand locations, and YES, the primary and secondary O2's can be changed without removing the engine assembly, as well as the EGT's, Transmission, and TC. All you need is a transverse bar to support the engine.

Ok, here's some additional photo's. For those wondering about the jack stands, the fronts were on the pinch weld lift point.
http://i722.photobucket.com/albums/ww228/Pellis833/005-16.jpg
and the rears were placed further inboard at the alternate lift point.
http://i722.photobucket.com/albums/ww228/Pellis833/006-18.jpg
Here's where the transverse bar was attached.
http://i722.photobucket.com/albums/ww228/Pellis833/009-12.jpg
http://i722.photobucket.com/albums/ww228/Pellis833/015-2.jpg
http://i722.photobucket.com/albums/ww228/Pellis833/013-7.jpg
The upper strut mounts had to be removed to allow the suspension to drop as an assembly with the engine cradle.
http://i722.photobucket.com/albums/ww228/Pellis833/007-19.jpg
http://i722.photobucket.com/albums/ww228/Pellis833/011-5.jpg
And don't forget to disconnect the level sensor!
http://i722.photobucket.com/albums/ww228/Pellis833/008-10.jpg
An additional jack was placed under the engine cradle for additional safety.
http://i722.photobucket.com/albums/ww228/Pellis833/010-7.jpg
You can see here that the prop shaft has to be disconnected from the output shaft of the transmission, to allow enough movement of the engine/trans.
http://i722.photobucket.com/albums/ww228/Pellis833/006-17.jpg
Here's a before pick of the precat about to meet it's fate.
http://i722.photobucket.com/albums/ww228/Pellis833/002-17.jpg
And here is an after photo.
http://i722.photobucket.com/albums/ww228/Pellis833/004-18.jpg
I would not recommend this to anyone. Removing the downpipes was the easy part, at about 3 hours. It took about 3-4 hours to get the metal substrate catalyst material out of the downpipe. It was absolutely excruciating, even with an pneumatic air chisel. So, 3 hours to remove, 2.5 to reinstall, but 4 just to gut the pipes. I wish I was getting paid the 22 hours of labor the dealer gets to do this. ;)

They're coded out on my Viper tune, although I probably should have relocated them for when I reinstall my stock ecu for dealer warranty visits. I'll just have to install some O2 sensor spacers somewhere down the line. So Eurocharged was able to shut off the DTC's for the secondary O2's for you? They were unable to do that at the time I was dealing with them.

Stop, I'm blushing.... The cradle remained attached to the engine/trans mounts. I removed the cradle bolts that fasten it to the body, then lowered the engine/trans/cradle/suspension about 6" as an assembly.

Pat has got my vote for sure!
I gutted the pre-cats on a spare pair of downpipes & it is a pain. I've been trying to get indy shop(s) to install the downpipes w/o engine pull. Maybe I will share your work. Also, our expert transmission guy TozoM8 was good enough to share his method which is done with car on lift. Requires supports under trans. & engine. Not sure if you have to unbolt upper strut mounts or disconnect prop shaft.

When I bought my car, it came with a non-resonated Milltek with Milltek larger downpipes and high flow cats. I've always wondered how well the high flow cats flow compared to gutted stock cars. I used to have a 3000GT VR-4 and when I gutted the pre-cats on it, it made a pretty big difference in spool time.

I don't feel its worth the money, but then again, I am on a budget. ;)

Luckily, I never had a pay a dime for all of my updates, because some kid with some of the family $$ did all the upgrades and sold it 6 months later to get an R8. I paid book value for the RS6 regardless of all of the modifications.

No resonance what so ever, as that's a huge pet peeve of mine. The sound of the exhaust is very subdued at cruising speeds, not even discernible in the cabin, but when the car hits boost it's like a light switch has been flipped, and it absolutely roars. I just noticed today while driving around town with the windows open (lost dog, a whole different story) you can really hear the turbo's! Sounds sinister, but not obnoxious.

DHall1

50/50

Since you have a full time awd vehicle....check with local laws. You may be exempt from dyno testing. If you had to dyno I bet it would not pass. You live in Nancy Pelosi's back yard just check three times and on Sunday. Also, you will need ecu mapping to delete secondary O2 sensors.

Yes I live in NP's back yard- California. my last car - a staged evo, didnt go on the dyno and wouldnt pass without a second cat, so $500 dollars and 45 minutes later that cat was in then out and is now up for sale.. Car got totaled on 880 when I was slammed from behind from a texting 20 y/o female.. How do i know she was texting? she almost hit me two other times before clocking me stopped at 40+. I am not sure how she didnt hit me the first two times it was so close and when she looked up she was holding her flip out phone in one hand..

anyhow- when it comes to smog im screwed, actually when it comes to alot more than just cars im screwed gotta love the golden state.. I wont be able to do it if it doesnt pass so hopefully someone has hassled through this before

I was wondering the same thing about the pre-cat gutted...

If I remember correctly, on the driver's side there is a sticker on the inside of the hood stating something to the effect of the RS6 is federally exempt from some sort of Dyno for smog?!?
(Proof photo with OZZY, in case "someone" needs it)

But HELL! with all the Baja/Sonora cars with the amount of NAFTA exhaust that pump out amounts greater than the likes of 2 strokes...
We all know that second hand smoke from TJ and Cuidad Juarez actually STAYS there...

DHall1
September 21st, 2010, 20:45
The problem is very few members have eliminated the primary cats. Its a huge job and the ecu needs the proper coding. Add to that your restrictions....just too many hurdles for most RS6 owners. Its not like you can install primary cats and just cut them out after smogging.

Flash the car with a good tune and you may be surprised. The car is nasty fast with just the proper reflash and add the Sportec lower vent and Aces iv. Nothing will touch the beast even in the heat of summer with crappy 91oct NP corn gas. Ask me how I know.

I'm with Ben on this. Actually peeves me that no one tries to give me a run. I really don't think anyone in my area knows what the hell it is. Perfect example, I was at my mechanic's shop getting the new tires on (me removing wheels, and cleaning while he mounted and balanced) and a guy came in and saw the beast wheel-less on the lift and asked "so does that have a turbo?" I said "2, one for every 4 cylinders". Took the country boy to realize it was a V8 and said "Holy crap, I bet it pretty damn quick?" "It does alright"

No kidding. And after hearing your non-res Miltek....I'm actually considering getting the cat-back. Not to mention the tips are about the most sexy exhaust tips I have ever seen.

Enough kissing your a$$. hehe, who wants to argue about anything? hehe

The amazing thing is that between 70 and 80 mph this thing is as quiet as stock. Above 80 she starts to sing a nice tune. Step on it and it Roars. I find myself stunning a lot of people as I pass them. Like, what the hell was that !! I don't care what kind of trouble I might have with this car, because to me this is the best thing on the Planet. For the money nothing comes remotely close. I hope I didn't stray of the topic to much, but I just had to let everyone know how I feel about our Beasts.
