funky. unique. retro-modern. avant-garde.

it is not futuristic, beautiful, or ugly.

it is a remarkable car. truly on its own- in a way the CLS and panamera and rapide are not.

i want to see one with an alternate leather pattern, like the cross-stitch style option on the A8.

the A7? I REALLY LIKE IT.

I don't understand why they made so cheap-looking part near the armrest... Cheap plastick, chip pocket... Reminds me of Infiniti...
10144

And this horrible prehistoric gearbox swich, taken from VW passat... It's great for VW, but not A7... Especially after new A8 came out... Compare:
10145

New CLS is made for people, who want a big car, want to drive it themeselves whithout being taken for hired drivers and to have 4 doors. For those, who won't buy S-class for mentioned reasons.
This car is not going to do this with A8.

Looks a lot like the concept. The interior might not be as awesome as the A8, but it's still very good.

Was expecting the sportback front end, though... This one is a bit conventional, but nevertheless lovely! Need better pics to decide... IRL should be awesome, as same as the A5 translates really nicely from the ok picture to a real-life beauty!

Looks classy, but it won't beat the CLS I think... I like the CLS more...

All the models of Audi are getting the same led-lights/grills/design etc... I really would like to see a different model design-wise :(

It is difficult not to see the Panamera's basic shape lurking beneath the A7's cool exterior. The proportions are identical, both inside and out. However, where the Panamera looks like a sad and desperate attempt to reconfigure a classic 911 shape into a saloon car, the A7 is an altogether more superior and elegant proposition. Independently, it is beautiful and iconic. But next to other Audis, the trademark design signatures are starting to become too familiar. Before Bangle came along, BMW's were also criticised for their cookie cutter approach to design, but here there is enough to distinguish the A7 from lesser Audis, with the exception of the A5 Sportback. i just wonder if the two cars are sufficiently differentiated in the real world to justify the A7's higher price tag. We'll see soon enough. The overlap with the A8 as well as the Panamera is hard to ignore.

I tend to agree with Kilko, the new Mercedes-Benz is likely to be a better car if not a more individual one. The latest crop of Benz engines certainly give those from Ingolstadt and Munich a run for their money. No less important, Mercedes design language under the direction of Gordon Wagoner finally seems to be turning the corner. Concrete slab architecture is giving way to more fluid sculpted lines. I particularly like the recent Shooting Brake concept. Of course, Audi's edge will be Quattro. Another important factor is 4-seat configurations. They're fine for many people, but not for all. Both the A7 and CLS will need to offer 3-seat rear benches as an option if they are to maximise their sales potential.

What we're seeing here is another definitive step to elevate the Audi brand among premium German car competitors. Increases in size, performance, dynamic capabilities and quality will all be reflected by a higher price premium. The biggest question mark hanging over the A7 is whether the Audi brand is strong enough to give the A7 the badge appeal it will need to truly succeed. Forgive me if that sounds like an inflammatory remark, but this website began its existence as an ode to the original RS6: a truly wonderful and inspirational motor car. It was well ahead of its time, but its appeal lay in the fact that it could do what cars costing twice the money could not. It cost around £50K when launched. Audi was a value brand. When the new V10 RS6 arrived, it went up so much in price that the market for it shrank. In many ways, Audi forgot its roots. I just wonder whether the A7 will be priced out of contention.

Having said all that, Audi may have an ace up its sleeve with this car and hopefully all should be revealed tomorrow. This is the much vaunted 4.0 litre TFSI V8.

The Audi A7 – elegance and efficiency

INGOLSTADT, Germany, Jul 26, 2010 - Summary

Aesthetic and athletic –
the Audi A7 Sportback

Emotion-packed design, sporty character and innovative technology: Audi is targeting a new market segment with the A7 Sportback. The large five-door model with the dynamically accentuated rear end brings together the best of three worlds: the sporty elegance of a coupe, the comfort of a sedan and the practicality of a station wagon.

The A7 Sportback is pure high-tech. Its body is very lightweight thanks to numerous aluminum components. The elegant interior shows a craftsman's level of workmanship. The four V6 engines combine refined power with groundbreaking efficiency. The 3.0 TDI with 150 kW (204 hp) and multitronic has CO2 emissions of just 139 grams per kilometer (223.70 g/mile). The sporty chassis comes with new solutions, such as electromechanical power steering. When it comes to assistance and infotainment systems, the luxury-class coupe exhibits all of the innovative power expected of Audi.

The five-door coupe from Audi combines supreme, long-distance comfort with a sporty character. The interior noise level is very low even at fast highway speeds, with the V6 engines providing refined acoustic feedback as their power unfolds.

The excellent vibrational comfort likewise contributes to the atmosphere of cultured tranquility on board. This is the result of painstakingly tuning all components, systematic hydraulic damping in the axle and drivetrain bearings and the extremely stiff body. The body is comprised primarily of aluminum and high-tech steels, making it extremely lightweight and safe. The large rear hatch opens wide to reveal a large, extremely usable luggage compartment that is very easy to load. Its 535-liter (18.89 cu ft) capacity swells to a volume of 1,390 liters (49.09 cu ft) with the rear seat backrests folded down.

With the A7 Sportback, which will be rolling into dealerships in the fall at a base price of €51,600, Audi is taking up a new design line representing elegance on a grand scale. The five-door coupe is 4.97 meters (16.31 ft) long and 1.91 meters (6.27 ft) wide, but only 1.42 meters (4.66 ft) high. Its long hood, the short front overhang, the long wheelbase, the sportily flowing C-pillars and the sharply dropping rear create a dynamic overall impression. The five-door coupe is an aesthetic athlete with a wide, powerful road stance.

Optional LED headlights reinforce the unmistakable expression of the A7 Sportback and provide all light functions with light-emitting diodes while minimizing energy consumption. Bi-xenon headlights and LED tail lights come standard. The innovative all-weather light function has also been integrated into the headlights, replacing the classic fog lights.

The sinewy sportiness of the exterior carries over into the interior of the A7 Sportback, where Audi again demonstrates its leading role in automotive design. The salient element is the "wrap-around," a horizontal line that encircles the driver and front-seat passenger in the interior to provide a feeling of safety and security. The wave-shaped application strip with its integrative dynamics is the salient element of the dashboard.

The utmost care has been devoted to every last detail in the interior. Workmanship is at a craftsman's level. Optional climate-control and massage functions are available for the front seats covered in high-grade Audi leathers. The optional ambient lighting fills the entire interior with atmosphere.

Like Audi's A8 flagship, the A7 Sportback also combines a new level of technical intelligence with logical, intuitive ergonomics and self-explanatory operation. The advanced MMI operating system with central menu button and reduced number of buttons comes standard, while one of the options is a new head-up display that projects the most important information on the windshield. The MMI touch system combines a hard drive navigation system with the convenience of touchpad input.

The driver can use the touchpad to perform numerous functions, such as using his or her finger to write the letters of the destination or the digits of the telephone number.

The online services work together with Google to connect the five-door Audi coupe to the Internet via the Bluetooth car phone. A UMTS module delivers images and information from Google Earth to the monitor and combines them with the navigation route. A WLAN hotspot is used to connect mobile devices. Further to the Bose sound system, the top-of-the-line option is the Advanced Sound System from Bang & Olufsen featuring 1,300 watts of power and
15 speakers.

The top navigation system works closely together with the many optional driver assistance and safety systems in the A7 Sportback. It forwards the route data to the control units for the headlights, the automatic transmission and the adaptive cruise control with stop & go function, enabling these systems to recognize complex scenarios. In many cases, the Audi pre sense safety system can reduce the severity of accidents and their consequences. The new Audi active lane assist helps the driver to keep the A7 Sportback firmly on course, and the new park assist system relieves the driver of the chore of steering when parallel parking.

Audi will initially offer the A7 Sportback with a choice of four powerful and cultivated V6 engines: two gasoline and two TDI units. Their power output ranges from 150 kW (204 hp) to 220 kW (300 hp), and their efficiency sets impressive new standards in the vehicle class. The new 3.0 TDI with 150 kW (204 hp) and multitronic consumes on average just 5.3 liters of fuel per 100 km
(44.38 US mpg), corresponding to CO2 emissions of just 139 g per km
(223.70 g/mile). All engines use Audi's innovative thermal management system, a recuperation system and a start-stop system.

The standard automatic transmissions also play a role in the high efficiency of the Audi A7 Sportback. Audi offers two different transmissions depending on the engines: The continuous multitronic sends the power to the front wheels, while the sporty seven-speed S tronic works together with quattro permanent all-wheel drive. The latest evolutionary stage of quattro features a crown-gear center differential and torque vectoring.

The drive system is particularly flexible and dynamic. The optional sport differential actively distributes the power between the rear wheels.

The chassis also combines sporty precision with luxurious comfort. The Audi
A7 Sportback rolls on large wheels measuring from 18 to 20 inches in diameter. The chassis features aluminum control arms and a newly developed power steering system with an electromechanical drive for high efficiency. The Audi drive select dynamics system is standard and can be supplemented by the optional adaptive air suspension with controlled damping.

Happy about:
1- The weight is relatively low. The lowest weight with the weakest engine is 1695 kg.
2- Interior is very good I think except the steering-wheel, I hope Audi has a sportier design
3- Pricing in Germany is good, because the base version is still 6000 euro cheaper than the CLS, so it will sell I think...

Sad about:
1- The desing. I expected a lot more agressive front, although I think it's not that bad. The front is of an A8 and the back of an A5 Sportback. So there is too much likeness.
2- The lack of no V8 TFSI yet and V8 diesel (I hope they will be quick with bringing it into the motoring program)

RXBG

so...i guess the new V8 is not ready yet- or this fall audi will present it as the S7 engine and as a replacement to the A8 4.2???

Kliko
July 27th, 2010, 12:46
Yes, we all know that Audi is testing the S7, and it will come out soon. Maybe they think that the new 3.0 TFSI is good enough as a top-motor before they come out with the S or RS

Well done Audi!!! Potentially, this is my car, if only Audi Russia will not be greedy and do not make the prices higher ...

In Russia dealers think only about how to sell A4 1.8 T with front-wheel drive as standard. Additional options rise in price every month ((. Audi A4 3,0 tdi in a good configuration costs 100 000 E.

I did some researches in the details between new A7 and some opponents like the new BMW 5. I know that things in reality are always different than on paper, but i have a few doubts. New 3.0 TDI engine with 204hp/450NM absolutely equals the 525D in numbers, but consumt 0.8L less in 100km, wihch is great. Although accelerates 0.9s slower from 0-100, which is a bit disappointing. The 520D consumpt almost as much as Audi's 3.0 TDI but it is able to accelerate just as fast as the A7! And i guess it is much cheaper because it is a 4 cylinder engine. I don't think it is very favourable for Audi, or am i missed something?
My second doubt is the gearbox. A7 has (at last for now) 7 speed dual-clutch gearbox, and Multitronic as well, they are both great. But i've read a few things about the 8 speed ZF gearbox BMW using in the new 5 series and not completely sure if our 7 speed box can match with it. Am i wrong?
Qisha or somebody can explain these things a bit?
It is not only about entirely the new A7 but Audi's future technology issues.

Thanks guys!

this is not a motor u should really look at as a techno-jewel on itsown! it is only a detuned 3.0tdi which is only made to serve the purpose to be the cheapest possible option if you want a A7! it is not quattro so not really an audi for me! it's just for ones interested in pure badge snobbery and nothing else! you cannot really ask for a performance and driving experience with this one... even though I don't like bm's, I say - go with 525 if u want performance!
my 5 cents

Thanks for that. I was kind of surprised to hear it was grey because looking at these photos I was sure it was brown. Also are you seriously telling me that this wood trim won't be a specialist option, whoo that is great to hear because I truly love it.

One thing I will ask from you is to push hard for those of us the really need five seats, why oh why make such a large car only a four seater. I think I heard that the A5SB will be offered with the five seater option, so if that is true will the A7 eventually get the same option?
