View Full Version : Switched 12 V for Radar Detector?

I've got the Valentine V1, have read a number of post on AudiWorld about getting switched power from an unused fuse by running the wire across the windshield and down the A pillar. However, I've read a couple post about getting 12V power from the overhead cabin lights. No one seems to know if there is swithed 12V available and the color of the wires in the RS 6 seem to be different than what is described in these AW posts.
Some of you have had Detectors installed. Where did they go for power? Does anyone have a Bentley manual for the RS 6? Or a wiring diagram that tells the color code of both fulltime 12V or switched 12V in the overhead lights, or for the sunroof, or OnStar??

Any information you can supply will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you, Jim

I went the windshield--A-pillar route and tapped into the fuse panel; not the tap into the overhead lights route you mention.

How do you drop the liner and a-pillar moldings without damage? I've never tried this, but want to run the V-1 hardwired.

There is a bit of a gap along the top of the windshield so I was able to easily shove it in.

The A-pillar was much tighter; I carefully wedged some thin wood shims between the windshield and the Alcantara liner to make a gap, then pushed the wire in with a popsicle stick.

If you want to go the "hard" route and remove the A-pillar liner, try this link:

BTW, I think this the most helpful I have ever been here, thank you very much; please, hold your applause.

And bought an Escort Solo S2 so I wouldn't have to deal with any cords/hardwiring. My Passport 8500 is now just collecting dust.

Note - this is on a RHD car, the layout may, or may not, be reversed in your US models. Also, the presence of these points may depend on what options are fitted on your car.

I found a switched 12V supply under the dash. If you drop the whole of the lower driver's side dash moulding (2 bolts behind the pull-off panel just above the steering wheel, one through a hole behind the fuse box cover, and one each side in a recess at the very bottom), then you will find a row of about 4 devices (relays?), with connections clamped up with 8mm nuts. One of those is switched, and it is easy enough to undo the nut, put another ring (or spade) terminal in there and clamp it up. Whilst you're under there, there are chassis connection studs on the outer vertical panel for your 0V point. I have connected up two speed trap detectors and my hands-free kit using these connection points.

There is a thread on the AudiWorld site that talks about how to hardwire for the V1 using the power at the Homelink transmitter in the drivers side sun visor. I ran a wire pair under the headliner to the visor. There is a tricky steel reinforcing tube up at the top of the roof; you have to keep the wire out of this tube, cause you can't get to the visor area from inside it. Remove the visor and perform some real microsurgery soldering onto the brown and black wires. Brown is negative, Black is positve, go figure. I had a heck of a time getting the new wire into a position that would not crimp the wires as the visor was replaced, but there is a small space on the door side where you can sneek the wires between the headliner and the metal support.

Just a note on the headliner light module. I spent a considerable ammount of time with my DVM looking for a solid uncontrolled (but ignition switched) positve source in the center light and OnStart modules. After about an hour I gave up :vsad2: and went for the Homelink. I hope this helps,

Hi Jim-

Didn't have a chance to show you my V1 set up at Laguna last week. If you're around this weekend we can meet up and I can show you what I did with mine, and how invisible it is down the A pillar.

Just shoot me an email-
Ernesto

Thanks for all of the info. I should be getting my Beastpower mirror (with the built in V1 & Lidatek dispalys) in the next week or so & I'll be hardwiring the Valentine 1. I'll let you all know how it goes, probabaly by separate thread.
