Have you tried wiggling it while someone turns it on? Might just be stuck.

I did a post on this a while back (year or two). It turns out Audis are famous for electrical issues from time to time. Mine stopped working for no reason one day (same clicking with no action), then like two weeks later started back and has been working even since. It's about $700 to replace so I suggest an electrical evalution/trouble shooting or do what I did, wiggle the connection wires in the trunk a bit and hope it comes back:)

if you can find the wire harness connection, unplug, spray with contact cleaner, reconnect.

I've done this with the drives side air bag (two years ago, no problems since) and most recently with my Ice-link for IPHONE which I installed in December 2003, and that's been fine for two months.

The "Audi Electrical Thing" is COMMON TO ALL CARS. A slight amount of corrosion at the wire harness connections and that's what you get, intermittent problems.

I have an intermitten problem with my cooling fans staying on at full speed. It's an error from a temp sensor which had been replaced about a year ago. I suspect it's just the wire connection and when I have the intake off for my spark plug change next week, I hope to find that connector and spray it!

Contact cleaner can be found at any RadioShack.

The other problem with the sunshade is that it gets "stuck"in the closed position because it retracts just a bit too far. There was a solution for that issue posted in QuattroWorld here: X-post to QW forum (http://forums.quattroworld.com/a6/msgs/12339.phtml)

It was an option on the RS6. You can add it, just like the A6 guys.

Here's a thread for the window shades:
