The mentioned power ratings are disappointing in comparison to what has been discussed here. A n/a 500 bhp W12 is clearly no match for the 760Li and the 450 bhp S8 Vs 2011 S63 (540/570 bhp) isn't looking any better.

Are we still in the stage "who has got bigger balls = HP"? ;)

Or are we after the better package? See S4, very likely RS5...

And the S8 was never positioned against the AMG S models. This would be the job for an RS8, which we will not see.

The S8 is the sportiest version of the A8 range and it played its role very well. Very high percentage of A8 sold were S8.

Well, from what i've seen the USA market is pretty receptive to the more HP side of things, and if Audi wants to claim a real stake in that market they need to upstage the competition on all levels.

If I'm reading correctly, the S8 is getting a twin turbo FSI V8. Which with a quick chip upgrade should easily put it into the 500 hp range. I'd happily let you put this in my present RS6. I know you're discussing "stock" offerings from the respective manufacturers, but this package would seem to offer some nice advantages. From my uneducated vantage point, it would seem most persons looking for a vehicle the size of an 8 series would be very happy with 450 hp. The low end torque of the turbo's will give another advantage. And of course, Quattro trumps all.

at audi's quattro driving experience one week ago, one of the audi guys said it would have a 4.0 V8 twin turbo producing the same (450hp) as the current S8.

The S8 is no lightweight but the 7 series BMW's are definitly pigs compared to the Audi's, I don't think the S8 will have any problems leaving the 760 behind.

Also looks no direct injection to me. Which can not be true, that's obvious. This can mean two things: 1: picture is not real 2: we're facing some very new thing...

450 hp is too small
500 hp should be to keep the competition

The engine will definitely have FSI because this is at the forefront of Audi's philosophy as Quattro is, find me one one that's petrol that doesn't have FSI. Think about it. :vhmmm:<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

FSi is a foregone conclusion. why does it need to be put on the engine anymore? looks off.front edge of lid is above what would be the grille. if it is real is is not any audi model i have seen. a8, a7, new a6 have hood line front incorporating leading top edge of the grille.

read the article again, YES direct injection.

"The upcoming 4.0-liter V-8 is a new, direct-injection engine which will also be built in a single-turbo configuration with a 400-hp rating" so both the twin turbo and the single turbo will be direct injection.

Price???

I'm sure direction injection, but I didn't see the hi pressure fuel pumps on each bank, just what look to me to be fuel rails. But direct is there platform
