View Full Version : Jacking lifting points and jack stands

OK-- I need to put all 4 corners up on jack stands so I can remove the wheels for powder coating. Seems like a simple procedure that I've done several times on other cars (easiest when there are central lifting points). I thought it would be simple on the RS6 but am a little hesitant after reading some info and posts on other forums. :vhmmm: Some say it can't be done, but I don't believe it. I can't find anything here after a fairly extensive search (although I apologize in advance if someone finds some that I missed and pulls the "search is your friend" on me).

Has anyone done this? What tips can you provide? YES, I know it would be easiest with a lift, but I'm armed only with a floor jack and 4 jack stands. Where do you jack first and where do you put stands?

Pictures would be outstanding but I can figure it out from descriptions, and hopefully I've titled this in a way that makes future searches easier.

Thanks,
BA

My answer is do the front first and then jack the rear from the diff, avoid the cooling fins. Then lower onto the other 2 stands

Its more the specific points to place the stands.

On the front.....I jack from the pinch weld and place the stands on a mount just inboard of the pinch weld. It has a square nipple about 2in in diameter. Look you will see it.

On the rear....I jack from the pinch weld and place the stands on the rear subframe mounting point just inboard from the pinch weld.

I use 2 jacks and pick up the R and L at the same time....first front then rear.

I can take pics tomorrow if needed.

I dont like touching the rear diff at all.

Here are some pictures from a previous search. Are these the points you're talking about? Except it looks like this guy jacked from the points DHall is talking about and put the jack stands near the pinch welds. But this is not an RS pictured, so there may be some differences.

Ok, here's a few pics for reference. I jack up the front one side at a time, jacking from the pinch weld lift points indicated by the arrows on the side-skirts. Lift up the drivers front then place the jack stand under the left engine cradle lift point.

Then move to the passenger side front and repeat, lifting from the pinch weld lift point, then place a jack stand under the right engine cradle lift point. (when you start to lift the passenger side, the car will start to rotate, don't let that alarm you, it isn't going to fall off the stand)

I lift the rear by the center differential support bracket. This lifts the rear of the car evenly.

I don't usually place jack stands in the rear, but if you wish to you could place them at the rear pinch weld lift points at this time, or the rear jack points (the cup shaped protrusion coming out of the floor pan just beyond the pinch welds.
