you mean R8 5.2 not 5.3.

wonder if GT will be stripped down version like the M3 CSL.

Yeah, 5.2-not 5.3-I corrected it.

R8 GT will be lighter and more track oriented version. Faster also...

Won't the revized R8 V8 get the new RS5 engine? Or is it the new one detuned to 430 hp to keep the distance to the V10, but utilize all the improvements

looks like my OP info was right. thanks to the source.

lets hope the US availability is right too. i bet this thing will cost an arm and a leg. i just hope it isn't a stripped down version.

on another note- the 2011 R8 V8 will have to have the RS5 engine. 75 hp difference will be ok vs V10, esp. since i'd also expect audi to raise the price for the V8 by 2-3K.

Kreso-are there any posibilities o a RWD R8 production car so that the R8 LMS can run over here in the U.S.? I heard from someone with Audi sport, that they are trying to bring that program over here, but it hasn't been eligable to race due to a AWD system from the factory and RWD race version

Dear MihokS5,

United Autosports signed with Audi Motorsport to start with two R8 LMS within the FIA GT3 European Series this year. You might know Zak Brown and his crew.

This is something to start off with, regarding a future for the R8 LMS outside the European FIA GT3 Series.

Slightly OT; I asked Abt if they are able to do a widebody LMS conversion for the R8 body, but they said that the kit is not approved for street use, thus the answer is no :/

Bodhii
February 28th, 2010, 23:12
wedouglas, if ABT would sell the wiidebody kit as an aftermarket addon modification, wouldn't the USA bumper crash standards be waived? Various wide body kits are added everywhere on all kinds of cars, with no need for them to meet any national safety standards or testing.

Also, I am sure that soon we will see a few private racing teams buying some used 4.2L R8's and then converting these platforms to full race cars, all requring widebody kits.

Unfortunately, I fear that ABT's normal pricing structures will always make this discussion about a possible ABT widebody kit, a little too hypothetical. :(

r8 was unveiled @ Paris 2006 so 2014 it's reasonable (8 years) but I think more about 2013.Strange to me no facelift in the lifespan ...

about mules: maybe tomorrow we will see pics of one ;) just kidding

R8 so design intensive/extreme/ and complete that it will, like the first gen TT, not be in need of any significant facelift.

Exactly the contrary. The sideblade is ONE of the design clues making the R8 so uniqe - IMHO that is ;)

And giving you additional possibilites to make your R8 personal

Hardcore Audi R8 planned

Audi is considering production of a road-going version of its R8 GT3 racing car, to rival the Porsche 911 GT3.

The V10-powered, rear-drive Audi R8 GT3 race car won last year’s FIA European GT Championship in its debut season, and Audi has been overwhelmed with orders for racing cars this year. It is set to deliver an extra 30 cars on top of the more than two dozen it made last year. And now it is thinking about putting it into series production.

Audi’s body-in-white chief, Armin Kappler, confirmed that one road-going car has already been built for appraisal, and that VW Group boss Ferdinand Piech likes it, but says a decision on whether to produce the car has yet to be made.

If it does get the green light, the GT3 would fit with Audi’s plan of releasing a new R8 variant every year or two, as Porsche does with the 911 (GT3, GT2) and Lamborghini does with the Gallardo (Balboni, Superleggera). Audi expects the R8, which was introduced in 2006, to have a seven or eight-year life cycle, as with its other cars.

Knowledge gained from the race series is expected to filter into the production cars. Already, on circuits where a car can be riding kerbs for up to 10 seconds per lap, Audi has identified areas where the R8’s aluminium spaceframe could be reinforced.

The next-generation car may not be all-aluminium, though. The imminent introduction of battery technology into Audi’s sports cars (with the forthcoming e-tron models) means the company is looking at making its spaceframes partly from carbonfibre. This will be used for high-strength joints and body panels.

If successful, the next R8, due in 2013 or 2014, could use structural carbonfibre in its chassis. By then Audi will also have made a decision on whether to equip the R8 with a dual-clutch gearbox, as used on other Audis, but not on the R8 or Lamborghini Gallardo; the Lambo’s drivetrain technology will still be borrowed for the R8.

The new RS5, which uses a more powerful version of the R8’s V8, is the first RS model to use a dual clutch gearbox, but Lamborghini is resisting the move to a dual-clutch gearbox. The Murciélago replacement will not use a DSG ’box, either.

it all makes sense. next R8 in 2014 or so since the GT version would be a 2012 MY car and would need to be made at least 2 years. with a modest hp update to the V8 and V10 the R8 will remain more than competitive hp wise with the SLS, 911, etc...

the next R8 will def carry the torch for the audi brand with even lighter components like CF and other hybrid plastics as on the A5 lightweight prototypes some have talked about and driven. with a significant weight loss and smaller, TT motors the next R8 will be audi's version of the next gen sportscar for the 21st century. a DSG is a given.

no surprises there.

the R8 will remain pure sex for the next 4 years and beyond.

Surely it would piss off LP570-4 buyers a bit if the standard model started coming with 590hp straightaway. From what I've heard the Gallardo is nearing the end of its life. Maybe after it ends, the R8 will move up to 560hp.

This is interesting - only an ECU tweak? Why not the full-on RS5 version adapted?

If the R8 V8 will be properly FL:ed and the power upped, I am considering it as my next ride after the M3 - based on mag tests, the RS5 appears to be too much GT for my liking. The V10 is nice, but not for me.
