View Full Version : Well I'm up late, someone decided to break out my rear windshield...

Apparently over 30 cars had the rear windshields broken out in my neighborhood, unbelievable. Some kids driving around deciding it would be a fun thing to do I'm guessing.

Anyways, I'm trying to figure out which rear windshield I need, as there are a few different parts available.

Does anyone happen to know the part number for it? Also is it different for winter package vs non winter package vehicles?

I already got a quote from a glass company, however they seemed unsure on which glass it needs. Was told $385 installed.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Man. Sorry to hear that. I can't understand how today's society is ok with the behavior characteristics of children and youth. :nana::vgrumpy: When I was growing up the worst I ever did was TP a house. And when I was out of line I ate soap. Dial tended to be the worst. I have no clue what the part number is. I guess I would have thought the rear window was the same for all C5's. Let us know.

Well,

We drove a 68 Ford panel van over a double dip in the road to try and get airborne.

We got airborne alright.

Oh shit, those pics below look worse then I thought. Sorry about the situation Pu. If it helps, I can look up the glass on the ETKA later today. Goin to hit some little white balls.

P3 - that really sucks - make sure to get a good shop to re install so there no leaks

Here are a few pics I snapped.

Again, if anyone knows if the RS6 uses the standard glass from an A6 for the rear, of the insulated glass or part number I would appreciate it. Thanks

Get the glass directly from the dealer then have it installed by the best glass guy you can find. NAGS glass will be more expensive than oem if you can even find it. On a side note, I just R&I'd a back glass in an A6 last week, and it's not a job for the unskilled. There are 6 connections for the rear defrost, all located under the interior trim. You have to remove all the sail panel trim starting at the windshield all the way back to the package tray. All of the grab handles have to be removed as well as the package tray itself. Care has to be taken when removing the sail panel trim as there are tethers that retain the trim in the event of a side curtain bag deployment, and as you can imagine they have to be reinstalled correctly. Oh, the rear seat lower and side cushions have to come out as well.

I looked up the part numbers, only the one ending in G was recognized on genuinevwaudiparts.

Anyway to match up the PN for the car?

Man, sorry to hear that. Truly sux!
If you haven't already done so, I'd file a police report. Sounds like these hooligans will be caught eventual, at this rate. It may hasten the process, and maybe you could even recoup some of the losses?
Some shitbirds took a bb gun to my truck windshield in TX (and many others in the neighborhood), and they were caught a few weeks later. I think the parents had to pay for damages.
Anyway, hope you get that PN, and good luck with the install.

Since you're probably going to have your insurance pick up the tab I would take it to the dealership. If you really have to remove everything that V8Weight said you do then I wouldn't want anyone who wasn't trained on the car doing it. I like Phil Long's service department for the most part.

That bites. If you haven't already, get a police report. So if the d*ckheads get caught, your car will be on the list of damaged vehicles making their rap sheet a little longer.

They're all listed as 2003 RS 6 US sedan. Not sure of how to match to car.

+2 on the police report if not already done. Maybe someone caught them on a home video or survelliance camera system in the neighborhood. Hopefully they'll catch the rascals to help send a signal to all "would-be" vandals.

Good luck with the repair.

That sounds like a good plan and very reasonable. Heck- another post on this forum states the front plastic license plate holder was $400 (I have not confirmed the cost).

Good luck with the repair and getting all the shards out of the car. When this happened to a 300z of mine, I found pieces of glass for the rest of my ownership in all kinds of nooks and crannies.

I spent a good 3 hours cleaning, as I can't deal with a dirty car. I took stuff apart to make sure it was all removed. I just couldn't believe how much of a mess it made, and the fine glass powder all over the place.

Dang!!! WTF is in the water. Sorry to hear about it Ben and I hope the bastids get caught. Calling Karma again- dump a truckload on the vandals please.

Mine is always in the garage at night. I have driven some contractors crazy at times during remodel projects as I demand they leave space for my car. I've had to squeeze it in at times including so close to require the mirrors to be folded. I know and appreciate this isn't an option for all.

Of course with that said, after I purchased the car, I had a drunk back a golf trailer into the driver side front quarter panel at the club when it was only about 4 months old. This guy even had the audacity to leave without a note or letting anyone know. However; with a little sleuth work, I found out who the scum was that did it- and he did not have a good day when confronted. Needless to say he wrote a check to cover the damage and some after picking himself up off the ground. Further, I harassed him for quite a long time afterwards about how one should be a responsible fellow member (of the club and society at large).

In the current world where a large majority of people don't even care about themselves or their stuff, they sure aren't going to give a rip about other's hard earned stuff.

It is hard earned for those of us that paid for our assets. Very true statement.

We pay, we pay, we pay.

Others take, take, take.

The takers will lose some day.

Max,

TheDealer told me the same price, when I asked for just the bracket not installed when I bought the car -- they said no. It either comes on the car as part of the price or if you need it later you buy it. So I had them install it since front plates are "technically" required where I live and I did not want to cough up $400 more down the line.

Glad to hear the rear glass will be a reasonable price -- sorry that someone did this to your car p3u.

Wowza- I got mine down from the shelf it was on, bubble wrapped it, and placed in the fireproof safe in the workshop. Wifey thought I was nuts until I told her how much that cheap piece of plastic cost to replace.

Funny- our newspaper just ran a story on why our state(AR) doesn't require the front plates and it seems that it boils down to cost. Thank goodness for our poor state. :)

Now that is ironic -- I thought you already left. I came home for the "warm" weekend and a big honey do list and now I am back in rainy California. I did put about 30 miles on the beast, washed it and the next morning put on my new car cover that came on Friday. Glad I made it home, the car was dusty already. Have a safe trip.

I have had two windshields put on my car. The first one was done a little more than a year ago at the dealer (when in for big service, had wheels refinished too). They did a nice job, but the 'new' windshield cracked without apparent road damage that next fall. So I had it replaced a few months ago in my driveway by two guys and a van. They did a great job and it was covered mostly by my insurance ($250 deductible on glass if I recall).

So it's not a real big deal to have the glass replaced and they said the rear is not much different than the front. The door glass is 'not that bad' also! So it should be relatively painless accept for the deductible.

And you'll have a clean rear window! Who likes to wash that one? LOL

Mike

Mike

yeah, normally it wouldn't be bad as the San Diego weather is usually 60-70's during the winter...

NOT THIS WEEK!!!

There are 3 "storms" headed this way (and I use the word storm as things are sissier here (storm - defined in CA - some wind, some rain but stops and then the sun comes out)).
The first "storm" hit yesterday at like 2PM and dumped enough rain to flood storm drains... again.
The next two are "right behind it"...

So we had to move stuff in the garage and stack it while the police took a theft report - ironically he told me to check Craigslist for our stuff. no luck yet.
