View Full Version : Power steering pump - standard Audi part?

Mine is groaning and it's time to change it out. I am planning on doing a water pump, timing belt, tensioners, accessory belt, intercooler leak down, intercooler hoses, and engine hoses all at the same time.

Can anyone quickly off the top of their head confirm for me if the PS pump is the same for all Audi engines? I can call my local stealership tomorrow, but they aren't all that great at searching to cross compare with other models..... >sigh<

I'm hoping it's a standard part even though there are many parts on our ride that aren't.

Thanks in advance
Tim

My power steering has often 'groaned' - in each instance it was a case of fluid being low. Topped-off .. no more groaning.

Mine is topped off and groans like an old man when its cold first thing in the morning.

Part number anyone? Also how difficult is this replacement, motor has to come out right? ;)

Yep, resurrecting this one. So if a ps pump for a 97-03 A8 will fit our cars, would a ps rebuild kit for a 97-98 A8 work to rebuild our ps pumps? The kit is $22 vs. $250-360 or more for a pump.

After further research, there is no reason it shouldnt work. Upon looking up the part number in genuine, Audi has been using the same ps pump since the 90-94 audi V8. Here is the link for the rebuild kit website:

www.pskits.com (http://www.pskits.com)

I called and talked to a very knowledgeable tech. The ZF pumps come in two different shaft diameters, 19mm is the larger one, and he said he believed 16mm was the standard one. If anyone happens to know the shaft diameter, i would appreciate it. otherwise, ill have to try and measure it before starting the tb job. The ZF pumps ride on seals and fluid. Great design when not leaking. The "supercharger whine is caused my the half-case seal deteriorating and allowing air inside, which cavitates. and the greater the amount of air, the quicker the seals deteriorate. So if anyone can tell me the shaft diameter of our ps pumps...
