Timing belt
Right bank idler roller
Left bank idler roller
Tensioner roller with relay lever
Hydraulic tensioner (optional piece of mind)
Water pump

ECS Tuning offers a complete kit if you click the above link, but please note that they have a habit of sending out the wrong accessory drive belt, so please make sure they get you the correct one. Also, there is not enough coolant included in the kit so you will need to pick up an additional gallon locally or order more.

So are the parts in the kit same as OEM? It lists random manufacturers for each part at the bottom of the kit listing. I am hesitant not using anything non OEM on this thing (having already been dinged by my independent shop using a random CV boot rather than OEM so my failed joint later on was not covered).

Mark,

Go over and have a look at my timing belt part number thread. We have the factory parts and a discount Audi dealer site for prices.

I will use the Audi parts for my car.

I am putting my order in today for all the Audi parts.

Not changing the waterpump at 30k miles. Fidelity can pay for that if it goes bad.

do you want to risk it going out at an inopportune time. My luck it would go out in the dead of the night- Police would pull up and find the leprechaun hooker in my trunk. Then I have to explain to wife why she wasn't invited along after I recovered from ICU.

Yes, you can buy them online.

Small discount online.

We can take the LX470 up there on Sat. Its a dust bowl gravel parking lot for spectators.

I wanted to reserve an RV spot for the week but this year there was another event that took most of the RV spots.

Next year I want to secure the RV spot early. RV spots are walking distance to all the tents and cars. No more than 100 yards. That beats all the traffic and cars coming and going every day.

Day one of two day drive to Arizona: I'm currently sitting in the most exclusive hotel in Liberal, Kansas after 14 hours of driving. Southern MN and all of Iowa were coated in a convenient shell of ice which was fun, but things took a turn for the better when it got dark in Kansas. For every 10 cars on the road in Kansas, 7 are semi's, the other 3 are Chevy Impalas. So I wouldn't expect them to know alot about HID headlamps. What I didn't expect was to be flashed not once or twice, but probably over 50 times on the drive down. Now when I close my eyes I see the outline of Chevy Impala highbeams burnt into the back of my retinas. :w:

14 hours X 100MPH = 1400miles in one day?!?!?! Holy Afterburner, Batman!

Oh, and just in case you aren't up on current events, meaning weather events - it is pissing down rain (verified by a chime in from born2be, benman, duckwingduck(if he is in the country), audi5000cqst,etc) since Monday.

Ok, OK! Now any of you might scoff and/or pssft at us whining Californian's when we say it is pissing down rain here. Just remember one thing: all of this rain heads EAST...I won't mention the wind...

So hopefully the rain will cease on Friday Jan 22nd. and Barrett Jackson/Dhall1's timing belt-o-fun fest will be successful!

I think your math may be flawed:) It's a little over 900 miles from St. Paul to Liberal, Kansas. So I averaged about 65mph. Actually that's not to bad considering Iowa was a solid sheet of ice, I don't think I went over 55 throughout the entire state. Yeah, it looks like I have a rainy future ahead of me, but in all honesty I'm looking forward to it. You should see my car right now. I did a full detail before I left, and right now it looks like I pulled it out of a swamp.

What was happening to me was, oncoming cars assumed that I had my brights on and flashed their high beams at me as they approached. It was funny the first time, but dammit, after about fifty times it started to hurt. It actually started to bother my eyes, and after I ran into a pack of about 15 hoodlum deer just loitering on the Highway, my nerves were finally shot. Try looking out for deer when all you can see those white spots in your eyes from the last car that flashed you.:brag:

No $hit its raining. Just watch Barrett Jackson....were going to get the years rainfall in just one week.

Good news is by Sat its on its way out and the sun will return.

High beams=well I just flash my high beams just for a short period to show the others that indeed my lights are on dim. I dont remember....is the RS6 xenon on the high beam? I know my wifes E55 is and crap is that thing bright when the high beams are flashed. yeeeks

We can detail the beast no problem.

Nice route change....your right on track. Make sure to drop down on I25 and take the southern route. Flagstaff and all parts of northern AZ will have closed roads. Dont even think about taking I40 into
AZ then drop down on 87. no, no, no dangerous route in snow. The drop down I25 to I10 is easy as pie and the drive over to Tucson is mostly flat as well. Take the short cut before you hit Las Cruces NM. You will see it on the map.

Yup...rained like hell today and we had hail, too. The world stops when we get "weather" here and it's actually kinda funny (being originally from MN) so I sent anyone who wanted to go home early.

The real bad stuff has gotta be over in AZ by now...I imagine you got some serious flash floods? Plenty of flooding here, too.

I get it less from cars on the other side than i do people in my own lane...problem may be that i come up really fast on their ass if they are in the left lane and depending on my mood I annoy them for a moment before just going on by in the right lane when they do not move.

I do feel a little bad when i prove it to cars in the other direction as these things are bight. I am amazed on the difference between low and high beams when in the mountains.

Ok,

Just one point here.

If you want to do this job at home. Fine. But please dont order the ECS timing belt kit. Order your parts from Audi or the discount Audi link I have posted in other threads.

Those folks are not taking the time to pick and pull the proper RS6 components. It puts you in a bind when you have the friggin car tore apart and find out that ECS picked the wrong thermostat. Not good. Thumbs down on ECS.

Now, to be honest....it was not me that ordered the ECS parts. Now guess who did.

Also, for those of you taking your car into Audi to have the timing belts done. Beware. Buyer beware because you may be missing parts. Dont ask how we know.

The job is easy as pie. I will post another thread about the topic but we would have been done in just a few hours if 1. I didnt clean every nut, bolt, trim, cover, panel that came of my car and 2. That friggin ECS thermostat blunder.

Ummm...i'm starting to think about doing it at the dealer and wasting $700 extra as i am worried about non Audi parts or things not fully done or 'look there's a screw sitting over there that I bet would fit'...so what would the dealers be doing wrong...

Mark,

You can order discount Audi parts from genuinevwaudiparts.com and save 40% on parts. I did. My parts total for the 35k service? 700 bucks....all the pulleys, all the rollers, both idlers and damper. Timing belt and serp belt, plugs, fuel filter.

700 bucks all Audi parts.

Maybe you can get good work out of the dealer but cross your fingers. I will let Pat talk about the cluster we opened up on his car. Guess who did the 35k service on his car? Audi dealer.

My car has never been opened up...32k and first go around. My car had all the bolts, clips, trim, timing covers intact and mounted properly.

Pats car.....no so.

I will never let any Audi dealer perform the timing belt service on my car. Period. You think your paying for top notch quality....think again.

Wow, ECS messed up my order as well. I was sent the wrong serp belt. I will be doing this in the next few months. Glad they didn't screw up on other parts.

Dave, did you replace the seals as well? The ECS kit came with these, but the ones on my car looked great, no evidence at all of leaking, so we left them in. I still have the seals ECS sent.

When Pat and I were doing mine, I didn't notice any problems or issues with the disassembly, as far as what the dealership had done previously. Mine was the 75k service so it was done at 35k also. Accually, Pat commented a couple times on how everything seemed to be properly attached, where the dealership can skimp on a couple of the non-critical items like the left and right side air cover bolts, for example.

Pat, what were you missing? How did you pull the lock support this time?

$700 is a good deal for those parts. I wish I would have done that. The parts from ECS are good too, but dealing with the BS mis-matched parts sucks.

This is where i really get annoyed. You would think the damn dealer guys would read their little book and save/put back everything that they removed. I am hesitant now as my front end is straight and does have all of its screws because a body shop put it back together last after I had my bumper resprayed. It has never been straight since my first tranny work 4 years ago. I worry about the independent doing the same but not having all the right clips/screws etc laying around. Can't win and can't DIY either. Oh well. I guess the dealer I can hold more accountable if something is f'd up.

I think i will buy are the parts myself though no matter what i do to save $$ there and make sure i have them all. Do the seals to the valve covers from the rollers come with something? I know one is shot.

V8weight
January 25th, 2010, 16:39
Here's my less dramatic response:lovl: ECS advertises that their kit uses OEM parts, which doesn't necessarily mean "Audi parts", but parts from the manufacturer's that make them for Audi. When we did Kyle's belt, this was the case. ECS has now started using a cheaper water pump, which isn't really even a close replica. This gives me a bad feeling that goes all the way to my toes. They also sent me the wrong thermostat, honest mistake, but I've had it with this company's honest mistakes. I've spent $3000 with this company in the past year, and here I sit 1800miles from home with the wrong t-stat. Now we have to drive 60 miles this morning to go and acquire the correct parts.

As far as the mistakes made by Audi during my last service: Kyle, remember when your timing covers were misplaced and rubbing on the belt? Well Audi made the same mistake on my car in the past service, so don't feel bad. Unfortunately, rather than rectifying their mistake, they just allowed the belt to rub into the plastic cover. Also, since the cover was not properly installed, it allowed oil from a leaky valve cover gasket to seep in. Add that oil to the belt dust created from the belt rubbing the covers to death and you have a belt and timing components coated in what looks like caviar. They also failed to mark my lock support for reference when they did my recent secondary coolant pump service, leaving my whole front end out of alignment. Now I have to start from scratch to realign my lock support, headlamps, and bumper. There is also a bend in my fuel rail from some overachieving tech crawling on top of my motor and literally kneeling on it.

So what you should take away from this is: In the future buy parts from genuinevwaudi, don't assume your getting top service from the dealer (most people will never know of the horrors lurking beneath their hood unless they actually tear into their car themselves), and just find someone you trust to service your car and stick with them.

Mark,

^^ What he said + this

It comes down to several points. I trust my hands and my brain to follow the factory manual to the T.

Not all shops will screw up your car. But how can you know? The components and clips and little covers are deep in the front of the engine. You have no way of knowing if they are properly fitted. (This is the main reason I will not take my car in)

It takes literally 30 seconds to properly mark all the core support bolts to ensure that the bumper will fit exactly as it came off. But how many times do we hear horror stories about xyz service getting the bumper gaps or gaps all screwed up after the job is done. 30 seconds of time to save all kinds of pissing and moaning when your done. (This is reason #2 I will not take my car in)

Its not really who has the clips on the shelf. Its who takes the time to not loose and screw up the clips when your taking the car apart. I will post pics of our dual teardown later. Its an easy job. Period. Take your time and be organized. Its really that simple.

Take your car to Pat and you guys can have it done on a Sat. Order the parts from genuinevwaudi parts.com

Get your elbows greasy.

Finally, I will post another thread but here is my opinion on why the timing belts need to be done at 35k. The 2 small rollers take a huge beating on the front of this engine. My R bank roller was getting noisy at 32k and the L bank roller was not far behind. My timing belt was still looking good after 6yrs and 32k but the small rollers were hurting. Now the two larger idlers were fine as was the damper. But I will still change mine.

Anyone that says the 35k service is a waste of time is crazy. IMHO It must be done...no more than 40k or 6yrs at the limit. Again, IMHO

^^ If you would use your brakes at the proper time then they would last longer.

Can I pick the roads or what?

We had a blast on the run. Rachel was a trooper with the vid...she had her hands up thru the sunroof taking these shots. It worked out pretty good.

We are still working on the 6000 dollars of beer in the garage.

Rachel can pick shots, you can pick roads, but I question Rachel's picking ability in men...

Well, the party is over. I've left Arizona and am heading back to the real world. I just pulled into Moab, Utah after driving through thick fog and am currently looking my $39 hotel room over for peep holes. I'll put up some more pretty pictures and videos when I get home.

B. Just curious why you left the most damage prone area (front bumper) untaped??

I like to think of it as a quarter sprint blue. And no, I think that's bigfoot crouched by the left quarter panel.

Made it to Council Bluffs for tonight, otherwise known as purgatory for the living. After running through Colorado on I70, I almost wanted to turn around and do it again. When I got to Nebraska I wished I would have picked up a V1 before I left. I80 would be the perfect road to just set the cruise at about 130, then your feet would be free to tap your heels together for a while and wish you were on the other side of Nebraska. Still, even at a mere 90mph, it went pretty quick. One hand on the wheel, the other on the high beam stalk to warn those ahead I mean business:hahahehe: So watch your mirrors out there, this Avus silver/ blue painter's tape RS6 could be coming to a town near you....and fast.

CALLS are only insurance to hold the stock till dividend. Sell naked to hedge and lock the stock price.

PDLI announced 2 special dividends in 2010. If these come thru we are looking at 31% yeild on investment. Ouch, ouch I will know more this week....already own the stock.

Caution: Dont listen to anything I say. I am crazy you know.

We have a RV spot for the motorhome inside Barrett Jackson this year so I will be there Monday-Sunday. Most of the nice muscle cars will be next door at RussoSteele so we will go back and forth between the two events. When I'm bored with all the cars plan to grab a couple tee times up in Scottsdale. Pat is snowed in this year. I told him to grab a flight and just come down for the weekend. I can setup a tent outside the motorhome for him. ;-)

do you want to risk it going out at an inopportune time. My luck it would go out in the dead of the night- Police would pull up and find the leprechaun hooker in my trunk. Then I have to explain to wife why she wasn't invited along after I recovered from ICU.

DHall1

I don't put that many miles on my cars. I'm not due for TB for 3-4 more years.

Putting coilovers on the Daytona and planning some cool car loops. And a loose drink or three.

Cant believe I left the DRC on the Daytona this long but they work perfect. Time to get that stance dialed in.
