I just want to say to all the folks living in the Hamptonroads VA who are looking for an alternative to the dealer that Lester (VW) and Paul (Audi) are the guys you want. There shop is located in Chesapeake VA and there work is top shelf. Here are some engines Paul has built with custom exhaust manifolds and turbo piping. Paul is currently working on my RS6. He is replacing the Trans, EGT sensors, EVAP sensor, motor mounts solenoid, o2 sensors and the timing belt service. They are really good.

make me soooooo jealous. I am very limited in quality repair shops to do work on my RS in Central Arkansas. Currently, my service tech is 2 hours away which makes a 4 hour round trip for service work. 8 hours of round trip if the car has to stay at the shop for more than a day. Ooooooof!:nana:

Congrats on finding someone you are happy with to do your service work. Good luck with the repair.

Well since we have the exhaust out of the car, I found a reason to make some improvements. I am sending the whole thing out and getting it Ceramic Coated here in VB. From the manifolds back to the mufflers. Paul has already changed out the Flex Couplings and we change all the joints to V-Band type clamps. See Pics

Nice work. The entire exhaust? Those V-Band clamp joints must have took some work to fab. I like it. Did you gut the CATS?

GEN XER

I'm not going to gut the cats, it just leads to more CEL's in my opinion. The clamps actually came from Vibrant Performance. They are nice though. Yes I am having the entire exhaust ceramic coated from the manifold back to the mufflers. I just don't like rust and they help cut heat from the manifolds up in the engine bay.

A big job indeed.

I have ceramic coated hot parts on both my Toyota's but I started at the cylinder head. Exhaust manifold, turbo turbine housing, downpipe all ceramic coated. They look as nice today as 10yrs ago.

If you have the deep pockets all kinds of people will line up to stick their hands in your pockets.

:vhmmm:

That said, I would not do it. I would leave the turbos and exhaust manifolds alone. Esp the turbos.....I would not disturb them because I dont have the specs on the turbine housings to know for 100% sure there is clearance to add the slight thickness of the ceramic coating. When you go disturbing used turbos and opening them up after they have spun just fine for 70k....you never know what will happen. While it should be ok....on this car it means dropping the engine again if problems occur. Tough call.

Who has deep pockets? Surely not me. I am a retired Army Vet living on a fixed income. See this cautious Dave is not much fun. I like the other Dave who throws caution to the wind. Paul was concerned with that as well and he has not fully committed to touching the Turbo's. He will advise me if he doesn't think its a good idea, but if I insist he'll have it done. Now I have to consider this possibility simply because it is the logical thing to do.

Merry xmas to u Dave.

Well after some deliberation. Dave & Paul have convinced me to leave the turbo's alone during this ceramic phase I'm having. They both had the same concerns about taking the turbo's apart after 71K miles just for coating the housing. I am a man of reason, so I will go forward without touching the turbo's. Paul got really technical about the turbo's and why we shouldn't take them apart. I have to trust the technical expertise of both these guys as this is the first turbo powered car I have ever owned.

I see. Looks like they're leaking in the same place mine was, I wonder what's causing this consistent failure on all of our cars? It looks like everything's coming along nicely. I have to admit I'm slightly upset that your car is getting a new trans, TC, exhaust work, etc, and it appears it will be done sooner than mine, which is in for a measly auxiliary coolant pump.

To anyone with inside knowledge (read: Quisha), any insight as to where the IC's were fabricated? All the failures make me wonder if they were sub-contracted to some former eastern block country with low labor rates, and technology and quality to match.

Mine goes in tomorrow for the Apikol IC installation. I tried looking for a way to log effectiveness, best I could do was ambient and intake temps. I'll compare delta T after they're in to see if it made any difference (or if I was measuring the right data).

You know why the motor mounts have solenoids right? They are a two chamber fluid filled mount. At idle or normal driving the fluid stays in the lower chamber and keeps engine vibration to a minimum. When a larger torque load is sensed, the solenoids transfer fluid to the upper chamber and stiffen the mount, reducing driveline slack. It's kind of like DRC for your motor mounts, a hydraulic compromise between firm and soft, also with a high failure rate. Oh, and those pictures of the worn flex joints make me cringe. Have you ever caught your arm on that frayed stainless steel while working underneath a car? ouch!

That's why I said No. We kept canceling out parts until the only thing left was behind the Cats. LOL. Manifold was ruled out because there is no gasket between it and the Turbo, any extra material there may have caused a leak. Turbo housing, well just way to many things could go wrong by taking them apart. Lastly, the down-pipes. The cats had to come off, waste of time.

I drove the car today we found the last leak of three. The tranny leaked from the oil cooler lines next to the trans, they only needed to be tightened. The PS hose leaked, bad hose clamp and today there was a coolant leak again a bad hose clamp. The drive was like driving a new car, now I know why I could not get by a 5.7L challenger. The car had a slipping tranny. After the car warmed up and I had the temps up I put it in S drive and gave it study gas and it gave me a study smile. It pulled like a train shift after shift brought more and more power to the road very quickly until I let off at about 100mph, the downshifts from 100 were very crisp and super smooth. I now see what I was missing.

Finally the Exhaust.

From the looks of the intercooler end tanks. They are leaking. Boost leaks may not trigger any codes. Depending on the size of the leak...what ends up happening is this.

boost level never reaches peak.....ecu keeps wastegates closed and turbo spins faster.....boost level gets closer to peak but now the turbos are spinning faster than needed.

Get the picture.

Should have pressure tested the intercoolers. That would have gotten Fidelity to pay for them. Show them pressure test results.

BTW, nice job on the thread. The pics were fun to look over. Give your buddies at the shop a pat on the back. Good guys.

The real question is....

Do you answer more than 71% of the calls to your office? Hehe

I've trained my clients to email their requests with that strategy...Allows me to document each and every item- no "freebies" for the constant "5 minute questions"- As you all know- I have important forum posts to tend to.

The idiotic tax questions never ended such as:

1) Can I deduct my pet dog collar I bought him 3 years ago? Answer: only if he is a seeing eye dog and you better have Bruce Lee do the eye gouge on you when the IRS letter arrives
2) Can I deduct my grandma's undies as a medical device?
Sure- as long as she has loose bowels and you have a doctor's note. However; maintaining the documentation can be a smelly situation
3) Can I deduct...(make up your own)

I did 10 years at Ernst & Young in the tax department reading and living the code. Went out on my own about 15 years ago and haven't looked back. Also, I've shed most of my tax work due to the uneasy feeling of being a "bill-collector".

It just never mattered- If you saved a client thousands on their taxes- they would complain that they still had to send in $5 (sound like anyone you know?). What a pain in the a** it became.

For example, the tax partner at Ernst I worked with and I reviewed a large bank's tax returns and got them back over $1 mil in taxes for 3 years of prior year filed returns. The issue was missed by their internal and external accountants. Mind you- this was a "permanent" difference and not even a timing difference. Do you think they changed accountants after this?- Hell no; they stuck with same idiots that had made the mistake. However; we did make a hefty fee for the review, and I did marry a lady (she actually recommended us to the bank for the review) that was in their tax department so it all worked out for me in the long run. :)

I enjoy the CFO consulting and computer accounting software work that now forms the majority of our practice. It provides me the luxury of doing the work for the most part on my time schedule. The client's don't care if I program or resolve their issue in the dead of night, just as long as they get a fix to the issue.

Of course, I've heard of some on this forum- that have far more posts than me and purport to work- that stay on the golf course quite often, forming get togethers for wrenching parties, or shining various items with Mop & Glow. :cool2: LOL

The answer to question word ratio on this one is way out of wack. I'm sure more than you wanted to know but I had some time to kill as I think of who I'm going to bill for the time that just passed...LOL

Did you catch the joke?

The IRS "plans" to answer 71% of calls this year.

LOL, only in Amerika.

Cash for clunkers, cash for golf carts, cash for first time baby homeowners, cash for first time fido homeowners.

only in Amerika.

2400 posts. Hell, I took 30 credit hrs per semester in grad school.

What is the application process? A lot of why yours is so clean is that it only has 30K miles on it. You kept it garaged all its life and you cleaned it after every use. Your car has never driven through snow or salt has it?

Two elbows and a lot of grease.

Clean it once a year. Take a weekend and jack the car up on stands. Start cleaning.

Mine has never seen salt or snow. But that really does not matter. I could get most any car very close to mine. Your car would turn out very nice indeed.

What do I use to clean? Soap and water and a scouring pad or steel wool pads? Then once I'm done cleaning where does mop-n-glow come in?

DHall1
January 9th, 2010, 06:45
Your just washing the underside of the car.

Jackstands and wheels off.

Buckets of hot soapy water. Dawn works best. Extra bottle of Dawn for wash mit.

Wash mit
Boars hair brush...soft but firm bristles.
3 scotch brite pads in no scratch texture. Not the coarse stuff.

Wash the wheel openings to get most the crud off. rinse. Then inspect to see where most the grime is. Boars hair brush and wash mit again using lots of Dawn to cut the grease. Rinse again. Take your scotch brite pads to the aluminum components only. NOT THE painted surfaces and not the plastic surfaces.

Rinse again. Thats enough for now. The plastic panels take a no scratch pad you find in Walmart kitchen section. When its all clean....take your Mopnglow and use it on a sponge....apply to everything. Its a wax sealer to help keep everything clean. There are other products to use for the metal/painted/plastic stuff but the mopnglow works just as good.

It did a great job cutting through the grease and oil. I had a lot of DRC multiple failure's placenta. Next time I do this I'm going to break out some Mop & Glow with the Captain Richards application. The car had about 100K when I did this and the car had definitely been driven in rain and hard. Not much snow or ice here in Arkansas.

I hope the pics are large enough..LOL

areas. However; the Capt Richards did do a great job on cutting through the baked on crud and helped immensely. From time to time, I lightly spray it on the engine and spray off. I get a lot of comments from various techs how clean the engine bay remains with all the miles I've put on the car.

The bombs away they have works well on the brushed aluminum. I had a ton of water spots on some of the brushed aluminum and the mirror covers. One application removed the spots that I had tried to get off with various methods. In fact, I almost ordered new mirrors and the rear deck aluminum piece until I got it to clear up with their product.

The Captain Richards Best also works great between scrub washes, and seems to be a very gentle on the finish. You just spray it on, wipe with a "damp" cloth, then wipe with a fresh dry cloth. Works pretty dang good for a quick clean up.

I am not a paid advertiser even though they have offered me millions for my endorsement as I'm well known thoughout my entire house..:)

I dont believe this. I need inner tie-rods. I was trying to find out why I had a small vibration in the front at about 70mph. We found out after the car was back together. I will be taking it back for more work next month I guess. I just want to drive it right now.

It is a trait that also drives some of the personnel I supervise up a wall when it bubbles to the surface.

LOL. I drive everyone around me crazy with it. The funny thing is while I was serving it was a quality that fast tracked me to nearly the top of the Enlisted ranks. I could have never been an Officer, I had to much mouth and too many opinions.

Not only is my OCD a problem, but I'm also a self diagnosed automotive hypochondriac. I can't drive down the block without hearing or feeling something and creating a problem with my cars that probably aren't actually there.
