Is 7th gear considered an overdrive gear? That could explain the drastic difference at high speed.

AndyBG has an interesting point - a tuning job SHOULD put a car like the S4 in a class like that of the M3. In fact, you're money for the tune isn't well-spent if it doesn't. However, your money is effin well spent overall if it does. An engine re-flash, especially if the manufacturer - aka warranty - can't see it, ala many APR chips, can squeeze major power out of your engine with relatively small monetary and reliability problems.

Rolling start? Straight line drag? doesn't prove much unfortunately, other than one is geared better than the other for acceleration and/or top speed.

Yeah, all of 10hp but weighs considerably more. Based on what I seen the S4 MTM is a superior performance car than either the M3 or RS4, both of which only produce their best at the extremes of their rev limit and at speeds far in excess of remotely normal speeds, not unless you believe 150mph is normal.
