When I bought my car, it came with one tyre that was a different brand (same size though) then the other three that are all the same type.

I understand this is not very safe.

Now my question is, how bad is it if you have let's say:

2 x Dunlop in the front and 2 x Bridgestone in the back?

is this really a no no?

Unless you're running two summer tyres in the dead of winter, I don't understand _why_ it is bad to run mixed brands... I'd rather run mixed brands than worn down tyres of the same brand.

I will say though that Dunlops are quite shit tyres.....

I think the main concern is that the rolling radius may be significantly different among different tire brands (even if the width/aspect ratio printed on the sidewall are the same). I was worried about this even when I put two new fronts on (same brand and type) when I couldn't get a complete set of four, and two had to be ordered. The owner's manual said this was OK (replacing less than all four tires), so no worries. I'd just double check the outside diameter of your tires to make sure.

Thanks for the replies, I decided after all to buy 4 new tyres. Better safe then sorry.
