Could be for taxation reasons...

yes in belgium if you takre a care of 211hp you pay 2500 EUR of tax to get a license plate.

212 hp and above and you make that 5000 EUR...

this is whay AUDI 3.0 TDI engine are sold as well in 211hp versions.

same thing for 2.0 TDI 143hpo sold at 136hp in belgium only

and 2.0 TDI 170hp sold under 163hp

and 2.7V6 TDI 190hpo sold at 163hp....

all for taxation reasons...

so when you ship your car you get the double KISS COOL effect.... (remove limitation and more HP)

by the way the 2.0 TDI 120 is same as 2.0 TDI 143, but that is marketing for all countries not linked with taxation...

Quoted power figures and real world figures are two completely different things, I'm happy to bet that both cars from the different markets make similar figures when on the dyno. I also have doubts that the extra or lesser hp versions can be noticed when tested side by side.

yes and no..

the 163 and 170hp are indeed indetical on dynos..

but a 211hp limited vesion from a 233 for exemple are indeed different electronically and you can measure it on a dyno.

I drive a A4 2.0 TDi 120 and belive me its far from the same as the 2.0 143hp althogu hengnes are the same... but electronically very different...

so its oly when the difference beyween real and the figure that needs ot be achieved lower for tax purposes that are close enought that the differenc is only in the papers....

I agree with Klint.

And what he is suggesting it not that the 211hp and 233hp versions are the same but the 211hp and 218hp versions are, the same will be true for Audi's 2.0TDi 163hp vs 170hp else where.

It's all very similar to Japan's 280hp limit agreement that on paper was true but in practise was far from it.
