1) anyone here have their tranny repaired instead of having it replaced? if repaired, did you go through the dealer? if replaced, through the dealer or independent shop?

2) same ?s with the torque converter

3) if you witnessed the work, did the mechanic drop the entire engine/transmission (subframe)?

4) did the shop keep your center differential or did the replacement transmission come with a new one?

5) i remember someone mentioned that they were able to get a discount on a timing belt change with tranny work... how many of you owners got this deal? was it through a dealership or independent shop?

6) anyone have this work done with an aftermarket warranty not through fidelity?

i've got an aftermarket warranty through our credit union. i have the option of taking it an independent mechanic or the dealerhsip and want to know which is better / flexible...

my tranny is starting to slip 1st into 2nd with a slight slam.. and the revs jump up and then drop when i blip the throttle (torque converter)...

i'm due for a timing belt change too, so wondering if i can bundle the work... have the warranty pay for the tranny work and if the engine is dropped, get a discounted rate for the timing belt work.

oh and i forgot to add,

if you had this work done and live in the chicagoland area, where did you go?

The book repair calls for the engine/trans to be removed from the car for a trans replacement.

The labor for the timing belt/waterpump/thermostat change will be much reduced while the engine is out. Also, have them replace all the vac lines and wastegate lines to the turbo when the engine is out.

I would opt for the Audi dealer to perform this work. I dont think you want AAmco ripping apart your car.

Lastly, I would go the route of Audi updated parts and just get the new reman trans from Audi with the TC. Maybe Mark can chime in on his Chitown dealer.

Good luck

dave,

thanks for your response...

actually, within pretty close driving distance, we have several audi specialist independent shops. i'm just wondering on their ability to get a reman. transmission.

looking for more feedback!

thanks!

Al at CPT (gocpt.com) can help you on both the trans and timing belt. They have done Bob's trans i think (Iconcls) and they can get anything. The dealer replaces everything and its a rebuilt by ZF trans these days i think. New was way more $$ back when my first one was done as no rebuilts were available, i have not heard of anyone trying to repair the one in the car rather than switching it out. I hope the TC is new but not sure. I just had the trans/TC done at Continental and asked them about doing the timing belt at the same time as I'm at exactly the same point you are. They still waned $1500 for it...i said no thanks as i have a quote from Al for the same work for right around $1000. In other words no big discount at the dealer since the only difference is the removing of the bumper and front end stuff, so its hours of work but not enough to make their price competitive. They want $2400-2500 for the full timing belt job/service.

thanks!

i'm trying to figure out if the rebuilt tranny comes with a center diff... it would be a lot of work for them to swap center diffs.

I just had my tranny replaced. I have been told that they will only replace the TC and the Valve body in house.. any other repairs are sent back to ZF for reman. They use the case and put completely new innards in it.
While the powertrain was out I had them do a 70k service even tho i'm at 58k miles..Saved a few grand doing it now.. (timing belt, water pump etc).
Unsure about the center diff.. will ask..

I dont think you can get the ins co to pay for a regularly scheduled service like the 70k timing belt deal. They pay for anything that breaks but not for services..Which is why I had them do that service while the thing was on the bench. It saved me from many hours of labor and all I had to do was pay for parts as they already had to put her back together from the tranny replacement.
I have a great rapport with my service manager and this enabled me to get them to give me the deal on the 70k service. All dealers may not do this.

my warranty would pay for the tranny work...

i would pay for the timing belt work... it would help a lot if the repair shop would charge a lesser fee since the engine would be out for the tranny work.

Well I did check my receipt and no center differential is listed...and it appears no TC (nothing listed but trans part #) but going to reread it. As i said in a post above the break on the engine removal etc was still not less than doing it at CPT. Conti offered $1500 while engine out (only timing belt, tensioners, pump, not the other items included in the 75K service) and CPT would do it for $1300 from scratch so i skipped it, but while the engine was out i did go look at it and the belt in particular and it looked to be ion great shape with no signs of wear.

Is your car the other one sitting at Continental right now?
