It's a great handling car.

at those levels. on any track. driver variability is too confounding a factor to judge a 1-3 second difference.

tranny choise is just as important. i bet the R8 was an r-tronic. and i bet that a 997.2 S with DPK and new X51 power pack (about 415 hp) goes around faster than the 997.3 GT3 with manual.

"The test driver for this magazine shootout was Kurt Thiim ,
ex-DTM superstar and Porsche GT3 Cup racer!!

Some of Thiim's comments on the GT-R:

– the seats are a little too high

– superb balance

– despite high weight, it's stable and precise on turn-in – even in slow corners

– thanks to the 4wd, you can get back on the gas early in the corners

– you don't realise how quick it is – it is all sort of filtered

– but the suspension's reactions are easy to judge

– the brakes are up to the job of repeatedly coping with the weight

– but the transmission is amongst the best he's ever experienced in a road car, "Smooth as butter and changes without any interruption of power delivery"

Thiim's summary:

"The many praises that have been sung about the GT-R are more than justified. It has endless power, is extremely agile and easy to drive. The engine and transmission make a sensational packet. The only thing that needs to be improved is the ride comfort for normal driving." "

The smoothness of the transmission is the thing that makes it's ability so good, it's will be able to shift mid-corner without upsetting it's superb balance. Nissan's approach seems to go against what BMW offer with their M-DKG transmission which according to testers offers the same jurk to their old SMG had. Seems counter productive to me when in one hand the engineers are trying to fine tune it's chassis balance for such a setup to unsettle it.

I agree completely, I wish the adjustment for comfort/normal/race had a bigger difference for street driving. i live in PA whre we have terrible roads. I'm sure those in states with better roads like FL/CA/AZ with no snow or freezing tempuratures to ruin the roads have no complaints.

Interesting.

Swedish Auto Motor & Sport tested the R8 V10 and the 911 Turbo against each other in the last issue.
On Hockenheim they posted the same time: 1.11,9.

Only difference was that the Turbo was on R-tires and the R8 on standard Pirellis..

And the R8 was the choice among these two. :revs:

End of OT. :D

The GT-R is one hell of a machine, but it just doesn't give those "I WAN'T IT!" feelings like a GT3 in my opinion.

I agree with you - R8 V10 and 911 TT are very desired cars, but talking about price to quality comparisson - GTR is absolutely number 1

Excellent quote. I still have yet to drive that beast. I am afraid I'll want one if I do.
