Argh,

I just purchased my RS6...
http://www.rs6.com/forum/showthread.php?t=18587

Today, returned from the Dealership with my wife's 04 A6 2.7T...
We had it in to do the fuel tank rollover valve recall service.

"The Torque Converter is bad, that will be $5,560 to replace".

This is not an A6 forum, but I know the TC is a weak point on the RS6's. So, I thought someone here might have some thoughts. Does the RS6 and the A6 2.7T share the same TQ?

The error code is P0741 Torque Converter Clutch Circ. Performance or Stuck Off Sporadic.
Faulty Internal Oil Seal in Torque Converter.

Driving it to and from the dealership, the CEL was not on.
Did see the CEL one time under heavy acceleration last week, stayed on for ~5min then turned off.

So, is the TQ Kaput?
Can I drive the car until I get a replacement?

Thanks for any help.

I would think you could drive the car for quite some time before replacing. It will give you time to research Audi indy shops that use factory parts for a price check. Just drive it easy.

Seems high for a 2.7tt TC.

Make sure you do all the needed maint while the engine/trans is out.

That is rape. Pure and simple. Keep up raping the consumers like that and you could see the same affecgt as the big three in the US. Jesus.

Anyway, you might want to consider second opinions. From what I understand, Audi has been known for problems with the connectors also. If you run the car hard and it shifts hard, then it's not a torque convertor in my opinion. Besides, TC are suppose to slip. It's in their design. The code has to do with the lock-up ability of the TC if I'm not mistaken. That is for improved mileage. TC should still work well for some time.

That's for sure.

New converter (updated factory design or aftermarket): $800 - $1,000

Labor: ~10-12hrs @ ~$100/hr = $1,000

So with everything it should be ~$1800 - $2000

VAST sells converters for the 2.7T's. They have a good reputation and people seem to be happy with them. http://vastperformance.com/shop/product_info.php?cPath=21&products_id=128

Here is a good article that pretty clearly explains what's happening with the failing seals and the P0741 code.

Yancy, are there any independent shops near where you live?

Here is the solution from IPT performance transmission, they rebuild your TC for $700 USD. I think this is the best solution you can go for.

There is an independent shop, I'll have them do the work.

...and I'll post the final bill amount, etc.

I've also heard good things about 3Zero3 motorsports rebuilt TCs. Any one have experience with either?
