Hello,

I'm considering the Sportec intercooler upgrade in the longer run. It is quite expensive and that is why I'm wondering did any of the users of the upgrade test the efect ?

Id any of the users test the intake temps before and after the upgade (vag-com) ?

How did the upgrade effect the performance ?

Any other comments on the upgrade ?

Any info would be appreciated.

ps. just by removing the halogen lights and the trim for them I got the temperature lower by 10 to 15 celsius.

One more option: http://wagner-tuning.de/produkte/200001010RS6LLK.php

I can't comment on how it affects, my car is still stock. I'd say you'll feel the main difference in longer runs. Like on a track day, power won't go away on 2nd - 3rd lap like it does with stock setup.

do you have any pics form the installation or the parts when they arrived ?

Good to have the comparison:

stock: 250 x 205 x 65mm, 3331 cm³
wagner 255 x 230 x 105mm, 6158 cm³
sportec 270 x 270 x 64mm, 4666 cm³

but it is better to have wider IC than grater depth of the IC

Not a bad price for these. 1600 eur

I like the fitment look and those carbon diffusers.

Anyone have more info on the IC core efficiency? Looks like a bar and plate core. Not a big fan of those

Ok, I like the core better and the fitment looks good with the warm weather package.

Any more pics and prices?

Full Sportec kit with oil coolers is £4275.00 inc VAT

The Wagner and Sportec side mount intercoolers don't look like they'd offer much improvement over stock. With no before and after data, it would be hard to justify those prices.

Have you thought about running a custom front mounted intercooler? This would provide the ultimate in low intake air temps. It would also be much cheaper than the aftermarket side mounts:

I'd go with a FMIC on my RS6, but I really don't like the way it looks.

covering the front water cooling system will make the cooling not as efficient as the factory wanted it to be. FMIC is not a good idea for everyday use of the car.

I don't have any experience of the Wagner kit, it is not even available yet. The people who do have experience of their other products say they are high quality, good IC core etc. And I'm impressed they even supply the carbon bits to direct airflow, the kit looks good.

Compared to the Sportec kit price I wouldn't have to think twice. I never had any problems with oil temps, so extra coolers in Sportec price don't tempt me. Maybe the plus' extra oil coolers help there as well as the northern climate :)

Both seem to fit into the original location, so that is ideal if your IC's are leaking. Mine are, salt water has done the damage. FMIC would mean a lot more modifications to inlet piping and bumper, I won't go there.I'll either replace with stock IC's or go for the Wagner.

Guys ,
I'm About to become the UK Agent for Wagner tuning. The big intercooler kits will be 30-45 days.

I'm getting " several" kits for stock . And for my car..

Going to a core twice the size how much would this affect the turbo lag? I don't hit full boost till about 3500rpm out here at 6500ft.

That does not work either, the upper half of it is behind the close off bumper.
That's why sportec use side mounted IC's

The FMIC works great for drag racing, even if half of the core appears to be blocked by the bumper.

However, the FMIC would not be ideal for those of you who road race or top end your RS6s out on the Autobahn, desert, etc.

FMIC is a stupid idea. Punkt.

First simple reason is the heat behind the FMIC is directly for the water radiator and for the engine !!!

MTM never used this solution despite kits with a lot of power ! The RS6 Intercoolers are very very efficient. No gain to change the location. Look at the Brabus Rocket or Brabus Bullit, the IC are located on the sides !!!

And as Roland Mayer told me recently: if I can run full power for ten laps at Nardo, I am buying it right away...

I wouldn't say a FMIC is a stupid idea. That's a really broad statement to make. It really depends on the application. A lot of cars came from the factory with a FMIC such as the Lancer Evolution, Neon SRT-4, etc.

I agree with you that on the RS6 it's not the greatest idea, only because of the RS6's tight engine compartment and known issues with adequate cooling.

I'll have some intake air temperature logs soon. I'm curious to see what they look like on the RS6. Then I'll have a decent idea of what kind of power could be gained with more efficient intercoolers.

As we are on the RS6 forum on RS6.com, my statement was aimed at the RS6 but not the overall world of sport cars !!!!

But you can also extent it to RS4 as well. Audi S and RS cars are not designed for FMIC !

Frederic

PS: Of course I am not talking about the RS2 or Sport Quattro because the water radiator is not located the same...

Well, I have to disagree with you there. FMICs have been proven over and over again to work great on the S4 with the 2.7T.

Just curious, what makes you say the RS6 intercoolers are very very efficient?

Sorry I meant soleley the RS4.

Well for the RS6, look behind the Intercooler. Intercoolers are not efficient by themselves. You need air to go in, but also air to go out...

On the RS6, the whole air flow is very very efficient...
