kind of silly but has audi begun development of an R8 replacement? i know its not due till 2013 at least.

I read up about the next 911 in CAR magazine and if most of the info ends up to be true then Porsche are making a huge step forward in technology with the next version. It looks to be a very exciting car that will be more than a match for the competition.

Rumour will that the big ass on it is to be able to aply a V8 engine.

If so then CAR aren't suggesting that possibility, they are saying as you and I have said for the better part of a year on this broad about Audi that Porsche too will be 'downsizing'.

I just can't imagine that possibility...

Sounds both interesting and wrong... Personally I can't see the 911 with anything else than a six. :vhmmm:

Is there any "truth" in these rumours at all?

the future is lightweight, high tech, fuel efficient engines. starting with twincharging and then incorporating hybrid and electromagnetic technologies.

bill gates just filed patents for the latter.

one day people will look at current V8 and V12's and think of them as dinosaurs- brute and stupid- as we do the engines and chassis' of a 1960 impala.

I have heard this rumour too. But like AndyBG, I find it hard to believe that Porsche would put a V8 in the 911. I'm not sure how it would fit without substantially enlarging the ass-end. What that would do to the handling, heaven knows. What's far more likely is a new version of the 928, or a Panamera 2-door with a V8.

The thing is whatever Porsche does to introduce new models that are better than the 911, people just keep buying it. It really is quite extraordinary.

As I have already mentioned in a previous thread started by tailpipe, rumours of a V8 911 have been floating around since the 996.Whether it is true or not,I don’t know. Autocar published pics of a wide bodied 911 & they claimed that this prototype Carrera sounded like a V8.There is supposedly a 4L boxer engine as well.Let’s not forget the mysterious engine that “accidently” arrived in a crate @ Techart’s tuning facilities some time ago.The engineers there where left speechless @ what they saw.
I know a lot of guys who race factory backed Porsches & they r telling me that the nxt gen Carrera S will b powered by a 300KW 3.8L boxer engine. I 've already told u guys all that I have been told about the changes that will appear in the nxt gen 911 in tailpipes original thread so I wont bore u again.
The 1 thing that really made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up was when I was told that Porsche Engineers were told from the very beginning that they are 2 build a Carrera S that must outperform the GTR & V10 R8.

On a personal note,I really hope the rear tail lights look like the ones depicted in that picture. The 997.2 tail lights have ruined the best feature of the Carrera, it’s rear end.

didnt the 997.2 just come out? 2011 seems a bit early to introduce a brand new car. isn;t it more like 2013? about the same time the new R8?

this i can believe- as a 2012 MY car. i expect the new R8 will be unveiled a year later in Paris- same place it debuted originally.

Pretender, this is gorgeous. Thanks for posting the pictures.

I think the next 911 is going to be a fabulous car with truly gargantuan performance. I imagine that now Piech has got his hands on Porsche, he will insist on a fairly substantial beefing up of its capabilities. He may even demand further engineering changes to push it far ahead of the competition. I also think that the styling department is due for a shake-up of nuclear proportions.

One thing I've read is that in order to retain separate brand identities, Porsche will use an exclusive range of flat engines. In addition to the 6, there is a flat 4 coming for the entry level model. I just wonder whether a flat 8 is coming for the 911 rather than a V8. I think such an engine would be acceptable for Porsche aficionados whereas a V8 would be sacrilege. Then again, with the entire world downsizing, perhaps it will remain a flat 6.

Anyway, it is certainly nice to know that Porsche is starting to get some real love from Wolfsburg. Maybe at last Porsche will become a true competitor to Ferrari?

I like the Panamera Turbo style rearspoiler on it.

I concur. Remember how long we'd been seeing Panamera prototypes on public roads before they actually introduced it.
