What's the 9th digit in your VIN?

Guys/Gals, I have two questions. Does anyone know the designation for the ninth digit in our VIN? What is your number/letter?
I've seen/read many RS 6 VIN's and most have a 1 or a 2 for their 9th digit but mine is an X. I know the tenth is the year designation.

Here is a list of VINs I recently ran thru CarFax. Note the 9th character is 1, X, 0, or 7.

Then I searched around for a VIN decoder (google: Audi VIN decoder). This one decodes and explains the VIN: http://s2central.net/vin_entry_sonic.html. Oddly, the ninth character appears to be a "check/blank". I guess is has no meaning... Not satisfied, I kept digging and found this explanation at http://www.autohausaz.com/audi-auto-parts/audi-vehicle-identification-numbers.html.

"9th Character: The 9th character in your Audi's vehicle identification number is a VIN accuracy check digit, verifying the previous numbers within the VIN. This check digit is a single number or letter "X" used to verify the accuracy of the transcription of the vehicle identification number.
There is a precise method for obtaining the check digit; however, it is not relevant to our discussion here. Suffice to say that after all other characters in the VIN have been determined by the manufacturer, the check digit is calculated by carrying out a mathematical computation. The correct numeric remainder - zero through nine (0-9) will appear. However, if the remainder is 10 the letter "X" is used to designate the check digit value."

I all, the 9th character doesn't tell us anything. Weird...
