Planning a gearhead trip with my son in June, looking for any good suggestions for economical hotels (no flea bags or hostels, but not looking for the Ritz-Carlton either) in the following cities (in most you can guess our primary destination):

Berlin
Prague
Munich
Stuttgart
Heidelburg
Nurburg
Frankfurt

Also tips on special tours, must sees, etc. in the car factories/museums. Any help appreciated.

Try this one as well: http://www.autostadt.de/portal/site/www/template.PAGE/

Ritz Carlton is on the site ;) (actually if you know other hotels here, I'm interested. It was a bit too deer for myself)

If you ever get close to Mulhouse (France) this is a must:

In Stuttgart, obviously Porsche and MB museum. Don't forget AMG in Affalterbach if you have the time, but make an appointment. Techart are vlose as well.
Auto Salon Singen if you have more time on hand.

Munich, Ingolstadt is failry close. Don't forget MTM on the next sort of exit.

Also, make sure you understand the difference between the town Nurnberg and the race track Nurburgring. They aren't exacly side by side ;) I think more than one person has made that mistake.

Have fun!

If you stop by Ingolstat, a good hotel is the ARA Hotel located near the Autobahn:

As most cities are in Germany:

Motel One https://www.motel-one.de/home.php?chid=54&m=3&lang=uk&sid=nn8hrve5lfjptkjr5cuus8ods0

Clean rooms & reasonably priced, but you need a car (which i presume you will rent).
Have slept there (Offenbach) when i visited the IAA autoshow in frankfurt.

Another chain is Etap http://www.etaphotel.com/gb/home/index.shtml

Sounds like hell lot of fun you will have this summer :D

If you plan on staying at least one night at the Nurburgring, you need to stay here:

If the Nurburgring is on your agenda, try this small, 18 room hotel just a short (11 km), beautiful, winding drive away. But have it in your GPS! It's remote and easy to miss. My favorite place to stay near the ring.

Park Hotel am Schloss
