This speculation about a Porsche hatchback is not something new.
There where rumours before about a Porsche hatch Golf 6 based with the 300 hp Passat R36 engine under the bonnet.

This is more than just mild speculation. Porsche's ability to produce varied new models was never hampered by a lack of ideas or a desire to protect its brand but simply by a lack of cash. With access to Volkswagen's extensive platform architectures and parts bin, the sky is now the limit. An entry level hatch based on the TT/ Scirocco must certainly be on the cards. I am sure Porsche would do a great job. And they could charge much more for such a car than Audi can for its TT-S or TT-RS. Unfortunately, with Volkswagen at the bottom end of the market and Porsche at the top end, you have to ask where this leaves Audi apart from stuck in the middle.

Porsche has obviously monitored Audi's success very closely and thought: if only we could benefit from such economies of scale. Now they will. The Panamera is going to eat into Bentley and Audi A8 sales, just as the Cayenne does the same with Q7 sales. Given the effect of R8 sales on both Lamborghini and Porsche 911s, i don't think we'll see a second version of this car any time soon if at all.

Anyone who thinks that model ranges differentiated by only their badges have a strong future needs to take careful note of GM's plight. Chevrolet, Saturn, Pontiac and the many other brands in its stable have all suffered by offering rebadged models that diluted their uniqueness.

How sad it would be if Porsche usurped Audi's success and destroyed it in the process.
