Hi guys,
Iv got a 2003 rs6 with 77,000kms on the clock. Took it into the dealer for a service today. Just wondering when the big service intervals are for the rs6 e.g cambelt etc..
The reason i ask is iv only just bought the car a couple of weeks ago :rs6kiss: and i got the silver circle warranty which covers all mechanical failure etc but not servicings eg fluids, brake pads etc (which the silver circle plus warranty covers). The salesman has assured me he will upgrade me to the plus plan if i want. so im just trying to work the numbers before i make the change. its going to cost me $3,000 nzd to upgrade..
Any thoughts guys?

Can you post more specifics on your car.

1. where are you
2. how long owned car/mileage
3. was the timing belt done at 35,000 miles like it was scheduled?
4. are the prices quoted parts and labor?

that will get us started.

now, the sensor inquestion is the oxygen sensor. A must have and very difficult to change.

Sorry dhall1 i should have stated that.
Im all the way here in NewZealand (next to australia) :lovl:
I have owned the car for about two months
Its C5 Rs6 77,000kms. Daytona sedan.
From what the dealership has said, the belt wasnt done and is due.
And prices are parts only in NZD.

Yea the audi tech did say that the eng had to be removed to do the sensor. Theres other things like BOV's and split vacuum lines that he has written up. Im just wondering are these all common faults and things that shloud be coming up given the Kms the car has travelled or are audi working towards this years christmas bonus....:lovl:

very critical.

Yea i asked the same question and he assured me it needed it as it didnt show on their system that it was done.

I bought it through the dealer and they have been doing the servicings since new. I got a silver circle warranty with an option to upgrade to silver circle plus which covers everything but tyres.

I dont know if thats the same as what you guys get?

All prices are in NZ dollars

The extended warranty should cover a couple of these items.

thermostat
waterpump
O2 sensor

Now, this is key. Depending on your talk with the General Manager to get the dealer to step up and take care of some these things.

You could do it this way.

1. Have the extended warranty pay for the 02 sensor. This will get the engine removed from the car. (most of the labor charges)
2. Then with the engine already out. Change the timing belt, wp, thermostat.

Get it.

Now, if I were you.....I would be pounding down the door of the General Managers office tomorrow morning.

Why in the world did they sell you a RS6 that needs....

Timing Belt
Water Pump
Thermostat
Brakes
Tires

These are all safety items and you should be very pissed. At 45k miles your already over the service interval of the timing belt by 10k miles and they sold you this car anyways. And you purchased an extended warranty that is worthless if that timing belt does infact break because you have not maintained the car.

You have owned the car 2 months. These were all needed 2 months ago.

Where was the dealer when the car was sitting on the lot and it needed...

Timing belt
Waterpump
Thermostat
Brakes
Tires

And finally, shame on you for not checking into the service/maint on your purchase.

Now, go into the dealer and rip some heads off.

Dhall1 thank you. Thats was just what i needed to get my A into G:vgrumpy:

And trust me when i say i feel really stupid for not having checked all these thing before hand and just assuming that buying for audi dealership i'd be getting the best.

Anyway after the rev up i got on the phone to the salesman that i dealt with and after a frustrating hr or so i got the following answer/excuses-

-the reason that those things had not been already done is because the Km's/year for the services had changed recently..... from 70,000/4years to 60,000/3 years or something along these lines... there was alot of numbers being thrown around to justify their point:nono:

the salesman then proceeded to upgrade me into the silver circle plus warranty cover for $3000 and said that he would make sure that all the work that needs to be done is done under warranty n not at my expense.

I guess time will tell as to what happens, iv been given a date for the work to be done, 2nd March. Which is a long way away but according to them they are completly booked till then....

Never ever has the service interval for the RS6 timing belt been

70,000km/4yrs

Period.

35,000 miles or 60km. There is no limit on time. I have the official 2003 release from Audi in my office. It gives detail for every single RS6 service to 100,000 miles. There is no time limit for timing belt. Period.

They sold you a RS6 that has a dangerous timing belt that could be ready to blow a 40,000 dollar engine that warranty will not cover. IDIOTS!

Now, it sounds like your on a better path. But, I would go down there and personally see to it that your car is getting tended to.

And you better be happy there is RS6.com

:addict:

Its 90.000km
In the beginning it was 60k but the changed it to 90k a couple years ago.

After many phone calls to Audi Customer services (and being told different information every time), this is what they were willing to put in writing to me:

http://i26.tinypic.com/mr8oyd.jpg

As DHall1 says, the lambda sensor you mention is also known as an oxygen sensor or O2 sensor. There are two on the car, one on each branch of the exhaust. The book time includes taking out the engine, but it is not necessary to do that if they can find someone with small enough hands.

Correction on the O2 sensors, there are 4 on the car one before and one after the Cat on each downpipe.

Very interesting note. 57,000 miles is a far cry from the 35,000 miles that is touted in the USA. I think these people are all on crack.

Also the 4yrs is just about nuts as well.

Like I said earlier, I have the "Official" full maint schedule for the RS6 as printed by Audi. It lays out the full schedule and each and every service interval and what is needed. From 0 miles to 100,000.

I dont think I would trust my engine to this lady. Debbie. Sorry Debbie, I am sure your very nice but I think your on crack.

Timing Belt at 35k. No limit on time.

Actually, I believe her on both. When I went in to get my oil changed a few weeks ago, the pediatric surgeon's car was in for a timing belt change, and I swear to god, when my technician pulled out the belt, it looked brand new after 35K and this guy drives his car hard!

DHall1

Greg,

That is the problem. Do "I" think this timing belt needs to be changed at 35k? No, I dont think it needs to be done. Inspected? Yes, I think it needs to be inspected every 10k after 35k miles. What is the interval for the 4.2 in general? 80 or 110,000 miles. Granted we put out 100 more hp that a S6 or Q7 but really. The heat is not that much greater on the front of that engine.

But, our warranty goes out the window after 35k. And dont even get me started about the service writers that try to pump 4000 dollar service on a car with 25k miles just because its over 4yrs old. This is where I go get my gun. :-)

I really would have liked to see the front of the RS6 opened up and timing belt revealed. How do you get back there so easy? Did you take any pics? Did the belt show any heat stresses?

Actually, this is very interesting information.

Can you expand on this info? The 90km would add water to the 57,000 miles letter from Audi UK.

Is the 4yrs true as well?

The 60km starting point would agree with my Audi 35k paperwork that was printed in 2003.

Actually, this is very interesting information.

Can you expand on this info? The 90km would add water to the 57,000 miles letter from Audi UK.

Is the 4yrs true as well?

The 60km starting point would agree with my Audi 35k paperwork that was printed in 2003.

When I went to buy my RS6 the first timing belt change was done after 60.000km but there wasn't any at 120.000km. So I called Audi main office in Sweden and got it confirmed that the procedure was changed some years after 2003. If it’s a serious dealer they also should have the relevant information on timing belt intervals. According to Audi head office in Sweden and two other Audi service places its 90.000km and nothing else. About checking the timing belt condition optically it’s a silly thing, since one cannot judge, from the appearance, if it’s due to a change or not. Furthermore there are other things that are recommended to change in the same time as the timing belt.
An example: mine is a 2003 years model, the previous owner has driven it 150.000km since 2003. The first timing belt operation were in 2005 (60.000km) the service in 2007 did not have the timing belt done. So probably the new timing belt directions were given between 2006-2007.

This is very good information. Thank you.

I like the conformation of (90km and nothing else. No time limit. ) This also adds water to my official Audi 2003 information that says no time limit on the timing belt.

Now, how can we get Audi USA to admit to this service interval?

Anyone?

The v6 s4 & rs4 have them done every 40,000Miles . The rs6 has the same cam belt .
The rs6 belt will not suffer from the same stress as a rs4 as the auto box will not allow heavy engine breaking.
My biggest concern is heat , I've stripped a car 2 hours after it was put on the ramp & the engine was still warm as was the belt .

I always recommend 40,000Miles !!! do you want a £10,000 Bill .......

1 miles = 1.609344 kilometers :race:

The official interval is 90.000km or 56250miles, since the timing belt operation, probably, is one of the more expensive services on the car, I wouldn't do it one mile before its time. If the timing belt fails before the interval is reached, its the last shops or Audi:s problem to fix. Its Audi who gives out the recommendations. Hello new engine :wo:

Then why did Audi change mine at the 35K mile service just like the manual says to? That was only 2 years ago unless the change interval from Audi has changed since then.

Regardless, I'll be changing mine at 75k miles. I'll be doing it myself, and I'm actually kind of anxious to dig in and do it. I just don't see any reason to push it out any further and risk a potential failure.

As mentioned above, the dealer did mine at 34K for the 35K service, but I think I will do it myself next time and be sure I replace all of the tensioners as well as the Water pump and such. I may try an inspection in the next few thousand miles to see how it looks, I just turned over 53K so it has about 20K & just over 2 years since the last belt.

Going back a ways to address Dave's post relative to v8weight. I was hanging out with my technician when he performed the timing belt change on the other RS6 and I gotta say, it looks like a bitch to do! The "easiest" way to get to your timing belt is to actually take off the front bumper and move the front assembly forward so you can get some access to the space in front of the engine to get at the belt. I really should've snapped a couple pics.

For me that's the easy part. It takes less than an hour to remove the bumper, lamps, and lock support. The hardest part is acquiring the specialized tools, such as the cam holding fixtures and tdc locating pin.

DuckWingDuck
February 8th, 2009, 23:07
haha, that may very well be true; I am definitely not mechanically inclined so for those who enjoy working on their cars, it may not be all that difficult but I will say this, the RS6 has a very cramped engine bay and that contributes to the time it takes to do everything in the car.

What takes 1hr to R&R....takes me 2 days because I end up cleaning everything. Doh!

That said, I agree on the bumper/lights time. Did I read somewhere that the 2.7tt timing belt is the same as the 4.2tt? I also remember reading a site that would rent the timing belt tools.

Anyone have this info?

These guys sell a timing belt kit, as well as rent the tools. Fairly pricey though. I agree, when I'm working on my own cars, everything takes twice as long, while I fiddle around cleaning everything, and analyze every part of the car. I don't see why there would be any difference between the labor for a cam belt change between the 2.7 and 4.2.

Dhall, what on earth did you shellac your fender aprons with? Just a vinyl shine product?

LOL

Haha, shellac. I like it. :hahahehe:

See the before and after pics here. #12 and 13

http://rs6.com/forum/showthread.php?t=17593

I use different product for different types of trim or metal.

Chemical Guys bare bones good for metal painted stuff/under carriage
Sonus engine and painted surface coat is good for under carriage, struts, springs and anything metal and or painted.
Meguiars Trim detail good for plastic inner fenders
303 Protectant good for rubber conditioner

Its really not that hard. A good cleaning in the wheel well when your doing brakes. Then some laquer thinner applied on the plastic inner fender will really get all the residue and dirt out of the pores of the plastic. Then the sealer product like Meguiars seals in the pores all nice and black.

Nothing greasy like Armor All. This stuff all dries and offers some protection for future debris. Also makes it real easy to clean off with a power sprayer in the future. Its like a clear coating on everything.

Yeah, like how those wells shine! One more thing to remember, our cars are now pushing 6yrs, belts are rubber which deteriorates over time, best be safe and change them every 4yrs.

dhall1 - can you stump up with your docs? my dealer is telling me that there is a 3-year time period on the cambelt and mine need to be changed. it was changed in 2006 (@ only 45k kms!).

gidday - yes i live in auckland. i've had the rs6 almost 3 years. standard except for the brake cooling mod (there is an old post of mine about this on audiworld) and i've installed the rns/e and bluetooth module, as well as the valentine 1 integration module to the can bus so that it displays in the dash. it is black, and a sedan. love the car. i haven't been on the rs6 forums for a while, i take it that you've just bought your car?

but its a great car and i love it. Best decision iv made.
well done on ur black beast. i would have loved to get a black one. Mine has a belltronics radar/laser unit hardwired. Pretty much factory apart form that. Had it dyno'd a week ago and did 255kw atw but the torque figure was the one that really surprised me 1000NM!!!!

Well that's about 56k miles, which is in line with the letter Rupert got from Audi UK saying 57K miles/4 years. Has anyone in the US been able to confirm if the timing belt service has changed from the original intervals - 35K, 75K, etc.?

I think it's time to make a call to the dealer, because I also got a reminder in the mail yesterday for my 60K mile service. ?? I'm curious what this service is, because according to the original maintenance schedule, the services are on the "5s" - 5K, 15K, 25K, etc.
