BTW, full specs 997.2 GT3 is still about 25K € less then full specs R8 V10.

Agreed, but they are totally different cars mate. A striped out version of a R8 V8 would probably put up a good fight against this beast.

AndyBG

This is GT3, and it isn't that much striped out...GT3 RS is, but R8 ''suffers'' B/C of ''quattro''...

R8=1635 Kg
997 ''non-facelift'' GT3=1470 kg

KresoF1
January 29th, 2009, 18:16
997.2 GT3 EU weight is also 1470kg. With new standard brakes that are bigger then before(380mm fronts and 350mm rears).

Unofficial claim is 7.40min or better!
Yes, manual only-this is a true sportscar.
BTW, 0-200km/h: 12.3s

I just fell in love again, what a machine....

A quick one as well, the claimed ring time is very impressive. So is the 0-200 km/h sprint, seems like Porsche have done it again...

Amazingly fast!
What will be the expected time of 997.2 Turbo for 0-200 and Ring time?
Will it be even faster?
If yes - even LP640 and GTR will be chasing Porsche once again...

Regarding 997.2 Turbo I do not know yet...

Current ultimate sportscar combo is IMHO Audi R8 V10 and Porsche 997.2 GT3. Both different but, true sportscars!

Ok, why? I have always loved DSG and the likes. Man machine interface, at its best.

I like manuals, but today buyers MUST have the option.

Porsche seems to be the last among the large manufacturers to offer an option like or similar to this. :stick: :noshake:

Ok, here we go:

Audi R8 manual(great gated one!) and true joke called R Tronic a ka the worst sequential manual on the market. Nobody except Ferrari use sequential manual any more...

Porsche made PDK(with a lot of help from ZF)-the best current DCT on the market. Just, unfortunately it is still not ready for usage in GT3 since it is still using GT1 block based engine.

If I bought an R8 it would be manual. For known reasons. :stick:

Not my problem if Porsche can't get the engine working with the rest of their technology. They should have had this on the market since many years IMO.
Leaders or following?

And BMW seems to be the only ones to do it right with the +/- up/down shifts. :thumb:

the engine in updated GT3 is non-DFI?
why?
Carreras are DFI already...

Turbo FL - will it be DFI engined or just increased to 3.8l?

KresoF1
January 30th, 2009, 12:10
It is not possible to implement DFI in GT1 block. BUT, GT1 block is pretty much bulletproof design.

997.2 Turbo? It will have PDK... So, here is your answer. I can not tell you more right now...

I see that 997.2 Turbo will be DFI and PDK...
Why didn't Porsche prepared a new engine for GT3 with DFI?
It's an advanced version of Carrera engine if I got it right...

No, it is not. Carrera use 3614ccm (3596ccm 997.1), while Carrera S use 3800ccm (3824 997.1). GT3 has 3600ccm block and it is, as Kreso said, GT1 racing, based block.

Taken from the Porsche website: "Aus einem Hubraum von jetzt 3.797cm³ schöpft er 320kW (435 PS)..."

So the new engine is a 3.8l.

Sorry, I was refering to 997.1 GT3..., I didn't have in mind 997.2, but as you can see, it is different engine block to a 997.2 Carrera S.

now I see that...
nevertheless, it's a technological difference that should be avoided...
to see GT3 with PDK is also very nice
hope for the next generation to have it...

AndyBG - GT2 - does it have it's engine based on GT3 with turbos? or on Carrera's basis?

GT2 has 3600ccm displacement, same as 997.1 GT3..., Its not based on the Carrera engine. Not sure if the GT3 and GT2 have exactly the same block. GT2 and turbo have same block.

Engines in 997 Turbo/GT2/GT3 belong in the same family-GT1 based block engines.
New 997.2 GT3 is member of the same Gt1 family, just for the first time it is using more ccm(3797).

New 997.2 Carrera and FL Boxster/Cayman engines are from new 9A1 family-all are with DFI, except base 2.9L engine in Boxster/Cayman.

GT1 block and PDK - could they be used together or not?
In GT3 - no
But in Turbo - yes
But GT3 and Turbo have same GT1 block
Where is the truth lie?

KresoF1
January 30th, 2009, 18:15
Your question is very good one.

Porsche/ZF developed PDK is little bit too big for GT1 block based engines.

So, here is your answer-997.2 Turbo will have PDK if it will use new 9A1 based DFI engine.

PDK and DFI are not possible with GT1 block. It is excellent engine, proven in many,. many races. Just, as hard as Porsche is updating it(new GT3 engine is EU5 norm!) end of its life is near I am affraid...

Maybe not, but feeling in the GT3 is so much harder than in any other "sport car" I have been in. Better comparing to Turbo (the others).

I see that...
So Porsche will use 9a1 instead of Gt1 engine blocks in turbo FL.
And coming Gt2 will use Gt3 3.8 engine while adding turbos...

What are the principal differences between 9a1 and updated gt3 ebgine families?
What is the main reason for Porsche to develop both?

I'm not entirely sold on the looks (prefer the old 997.1 & 996.1 rear wings) but all in all it looks pretty damn mean. Engineering takes another leap forward too - 3.8l and 6 cylinders yet it still makes the same power and torque as 4.2 V8 R8 (not exactly a shabby old motor now is it!), quite amazing, even if the torque curve isn't as flat.

Very impressive - this is surely the 911 to have. I have to say that - familiar looks and "only 6 pots" apart - this is very serious challenge to the R8 V10.

Few days ago I finished a law case that I did probono for a client who is unfortunately without any income for some time... Cost were close to 10K € from my own pocket... Yes, I am sensless...

My comment was based on the fact that members here do not like Porsche at all. It doesn't have anything to do with tragic loss of life(driver of the test mule).
