There is a certain rumor going around that this will be the case. i want to hear some opinions on it. i was shocked when i first head about it. but as i thought more and more on it it made perfect sense. the RS4/5 will have a TT V8 engine that really cannot be placed in the R8 because of cooling issues afaik; even if it could be placed in the R8, with the sport differential and quattro treatment and possibly DSG, the RS5 could very well be too close in performance and handling to the V8 R8. given that quatrro GmBH has limited production capacities (even after expanding) it makes perfect sense that the R8 would simply be "updated" with the V10 only, thereby leaving it crystal clear that the R8 is at the pinnacle of audi performance and much faster than the RS cars. finally, the not-so-huge price increase of the V8 i am expecting will not really affect the customer base the R8 is made for- another 15K will probably not keep anyone who wants the V8 from buying the V10.

I completely agree with your reasoning here and think its a wise decision. The V8's are sitting all over the place on lots right now too

I am not sure about that info since my own source from NSU is telling me the opposite...

1. R8 V10 Price.... It will be in €135K-€140K range in Germany-base price with Mwst. Do not forget then current R8 starts from €107.4K in Germany so....

2. RS5 is in best case scenario 14 months in head of us. Its intro will be at the same time when current RS6 production will end.

3. Audi needs to engine versions for R8 from more then marketing reasons. Do not forget that R8 Spider is coming, with V8 and V10 engines...

4. S Tronic....? Why are all you so impressed with it? Did you try it? For example in TTS... You liked it there more then manual R8? OK, then you are not the right person for R8 at all. Tried Porsche 997.2 Carrera S with PDK and liked it a lot? OK, I am not so impressed with PDK(BUT, it is much, much better then any S Tronic that Audi currently offers), just in this case I can understand if you are average or below average manual driver(read shifting is PITA for you), automatic fan or similar.

R8 is with V8 or with forthcoming V10 true drivers sporscar in the first place. Just for your info FL Porsche 997 GT3 is coming as MANUAL ONLY. Supriese? Not for me since Porsche clearly said in their marketing material that PDK is replacment for Tiptronic in the first place.

Why do you dislike S/Tronic so much. Is it because it's too smooth for sports car applications or is there another reason you dislike it, maybe it's all forms of paddle shifters you hate.

PDK is meant to be brilliant apart from the paddle configuration that Porsche chose to use. I understood the only difference between S/Tronic and PDK was that PDK held the gears, offered a race mode and had a form of creep form, all things which I would expect Audi to offer is any sportscar application in the future, be it the R8, RS5, RS4 or TT/RS when it gets it.

Also if the price is near finalised, then is the spec anywhere nearer being known?

S Tronic is currently just very good DCT. PDK is much better IMHO.

I think that future is DCT like transmissions just current S Tronic(in TTS for example) is IMHO not SOTA any more.
Not to mentione the fact that new S4 is slower in accelaration with S Tronic then with manual. Also NO any form of LC with new S4 S Tronic. I would love to order new S4 with S Tronic but, I really need to try it first...
BTW, excellent new small sportscar? FL Cayman S with PDK. Something truly special...

Best dicision Audi could make, dump the V8 in favour of the V10.
In that case they make room for the upcoming R4, power wise.
It could get a 450 hp 3.0TFSI Supercharged engine without entering R8 territorium.

btw, don't like S/R Tronic, mamual 24/7 for me.

i think audi will eventually drop the V8 in the R8. i am not saying it will drop it next year. i think they'll offer both for the 2010 MY then for MY 2011 drop it, in time for the almost as quick ~500 hp RS5 to arrive.

audi could then have a 0-60 4.5 sec TT RS (with room for a rumored R4 or whatever), a 0-60 4.3 sec RS5, and 0-60 4.1 R8. by then it will be CY 2011 with MY 2012 and audi will be hard at work on an R8 successor (if porschenichtgutters don't interfere).

you all know i am not a DSG fan in a sportscar. but i don't think there is a sig diff in DSG between porsche and audi except for the "sporty" programming the porsche offers that audi does not (for now).

Well the TT/RS is to be released late '09 so for the RS5 to be shown at a show in Aug'10 sounds right to me. Originally the RS5 was to be first but these two models seem to swap in priority, probably the fact that an R4 will be released 2011 may have push the TT version to the forefront.

Will Audi drop the v8 for the R8?

Maybe but not for the foreseeable future, what with the R8 spider just about to be launched.

I would not be sure about that ;) and the R8 Spider could be V10 only.

Yeah, it's possible but that would surely limit the customer count on what is already going to be a very expensive car.

Why would they stop V8's? It doesn't make any sense. All cars are made to spec, so it's not like they need to guess how many V8's they will sell. If they get a V8 order, they'll use the V8.

If they say the spider will have the V8 or V10 option, I'll guarantee you that V8's will last the production life of the car.

Mercedes sell cars with all different types of engines, same with Porsche, hell, even Ford does. There is no reason to discontinue one. If someone wants the V10, they'll order it. If they want the V8, they'll order it. Better to offer both than perhaps lose customers who want the V8.
