for starters, the M5 was modified. there is no way it would have kept up with the R8 stock. it was probably a dinan force induction of some sort...
i've stayed ahead of turboed mustang GT's and pontiac GTO 6.0's (holden monaros in australia) so there is no way a stock E39 M5 could do be that fast. that car is 400 lbs heavier than the R8 and has 25 fewer horses and about 38 more lb/ft torque.
'nuff said.

I raced a stock E39 M5 in my then S4v8 and it didn't get the better of me, so I don't know how a stock car could possibly get the better of the much quicker R8 than my car. :vhmmm:

bring both cars to the track and you can add a twin turbo to the M5 and the car has still no chance.
on the long straight like a freeway it will be faster as the car has a massive powerful engine, but race track........no chance

is easy to see that and modified the R8 has more top speed and M5 can have the same speed!

A stock unlimited M5 e39 can run about 300km/h.
The e39 has very good aerodynamics.

No.I tried both last year.Side by side manual was a little bit quicker.

Top speed the R8 is more fast!
But the M5 is modified see this video the M3 E46 cabrio have more weight and manual gear box win the race vs M5 E39 100% stock

The M5 E39 is slow car 100% stock but modified exaust and ECU is very very fast

even hardly modified it is not that easy to get lot more power than 50 hp out of the m5 e39, see kelleners or hartge. (exept the turbo kids)
I think the r8 is just to slow on strigtlines.

rs4 0-200km 16,9
is not the official r8 time 14,9......
