Eleven white Audi A4 2.0 TDI models set off yesterday in an attempt to complete the total distance of over 1,650 kilometers (1,025.26 miles) with an average fuel consumption of under four liters (over 58.80 US mpg). Organized by Audi and Auto Bild, the marathon runs between Basel and Vienna and back leading through Switzerland, Germany and Austria. Although most of the journey will be over freeways, some less efficient driving through towns and cities will be logged.

Given the A4's fuel tank capacity of 65 liters the entire trip must be achieved on a single tank of fuel, therefore, averaging less than the 4.1 liters (57.37 US mpg) consumption figures specific to the A4 2.0 TDI. The additional fuel savings will be compensated through careful economical driving style such as strong concentration, anticipatory driving and careful use of the gas pedal.

Additional fuel consumption gauges are installed in the vehicles so that drivers can see the current fuel status at any time. However, what ultimately counts is how much diesel fuel is left in the tank at the finish.

Fuel runs to prove fuel efficiency are a little ironic. That's 11 cars that will be driving for no real reason. 715 liters isn't grand in the total scheme of things but the irony is a little funny to me.

Well, if the car is more fuel efficient than the car it's replacing and a lot of people buys it the the 715 litres is a good investment :D

I read the blog entry on "http://www.autobildblog.de/2008/06/24/schub-schub-hurra/" about the whole thing (sorry -> just german)
In my mind that's complete nonsens for a few points:
1.) no aircon on at over 30°C temperature -> which normal person does that when driving around, when it's hot
2.) going on the "Autobahn" at an average level of 80 - 90 and not going higher (ok, ... they mention that one team went over 100 downhill)

well ... just these 2 points make the test completely useless - in my eyes.
