gang, whilst my rs6 sits at the dealership waiting for my technician to get to it, I've been thinking more and more about buying a lotus. Don't get me wrong, I love the hell out of my RS6 but as we've discussed many time here, it's simply not a car that you can throw around. Not to mention with the ever increasing gas prices the lotus offers the perfect compromise between efficiency (since it's such an incredibly light car) and performance. Again, I am thinking about acquiring a lotus to complement my RS6, not in place of it. Therefore, what are your thoughts on the differences between an Elise and Exige?

well first off I cant fit in either so I have never drove either...but I do like the way the exige S looks and handles (from what I have seen) also there is a pretty good power to weight output for the exige S

DWD, I hear you brotha. I too am thinking about something to throw around. Are you thinking for trackdays or just backroads?

I see a lot of the loti at the track. The numbers are there, I just dont know if I could deal with the sparse interior for real life driving. I think I would just look for an already sorted trackready 996 or E46 for track fun and maybe go with a Cayman S for some canyon carving/everday throw around. I had a Cayman S as a loaner the last time the RS6 was in for service, that thing is a helluva lot a fun. Ughhhh!, I cant make up my mind.

Anyway, if you havn't all ready, you might check out http://www.lotustalk.com/

What happened to the love of the Miata??!?!?! You can always bump up the horsepower by visiting Monster Motorsports in Carlsbad, Ca (I Googled and not the results anticipated...). Total sleeper....

Backroads and also an additional daily driver. I go around 10 miles each way on wide streets so ride comfort and traffic aren't major issues. And there are apparently quite a lot of people on lotustalk who use their Lotus as a daily driver. But ya, the genesis are certainly backroads, having been through Julian a couple times, as much as I love the RS6, it's just not meant for that kind of road.

On the lotus & the cayman, I was reading on lotustalk about a couple guys who say that the cayman can't even compare to the lotus. And to be honest, I think that there really isn't a car that can be compared with the lotus because of its power to weight ratio.

I still love the miata, and hat tip to ben for reminding me but as I was discussing with a friend about this the other day, in order to get a miata up to the performance characteristics that I would want, I think the cost would roughly equal to that of an elise.

Hornberg's got a lotus elise: http://www.hornburg.com/vehicle-details/SCCPC11156HL30597&location=ws for $33k and I'm fairly certain I can probably get it out the door for $30K if not less and that out of the dealership would be a fantastic ride as I'm no gearhead and don't feel like I have the mechanical know-how to tune a miata.

Why not compliment the RS 6 with a nice fast super sport bike like I did. ;)

Briefly!
Just before i met my now wife. hurrumph!
I tell you now Duck, It will blow you away, forget what else you think handles well. compared to the Exige s, it will be like a turd in a piss pot. when Lotus did the exige with the motor for the USA market, they created a masterpiece.
But needs must when the devil drives,2 choices I had, bankrupcy and no future wife, or.... well quite frankly th most fun you can have with your pants on.
I will never forgive the Firm that I was working for who stung my fledgling buisness for £8k, and resulted in me nearly going to the wall. So the car had to go, only had it 7 months, but boy, what a 7 months.

There is a certain stereo-type that can be associated with a man driving a Miata.... especially in West Hollywood...

rofl@y'all bastids. No I'm not married and no I don't bat for the other team but I do like the miata. However, as we discussed before, I think it's just going to cost me too much money and time to get the miata to the point where it'll compete credibly with the lotus. Ya, I might save a little bit compared to the lotus but it ain't lotus cool ;)

Greg,

Don't laugh, but the Mini Cooper S JCW is one helluva little car. Get wide 18" JCW lightweight wheels, JCW brakes and all the other goodies and it is one great handler with some punch for the straights too. A have a friend with a fully loaded '08 and it sounds and goes beautifully.

You may not care for the image but it's just something else to consider.

DuckWingDuck
June 22nd, 2008, 09:10
Man, I've been in the cooper a couple times, and I can't be spending no $80K like DBLIPA to get it into a racing condition!

Incidentally, the new cooper interior are quite shit and even this spiffed up JCW version ain't all that impressive:

http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/01/p0039004.jpg

It's way too plastic-y. I'd much rather go for the austere NON-interior of the lotus. However, it is semi-interesting.... A bit over 200BHP but what's the weight? Hell, an Elise is about 200.... And I can't imagine this JCW version of the Cooper being cheap.

Another thing that I've been talking about with some of the people over at lotustalk is also that I'm not relaly looking for a track car, that doesn't hold a tremendous amount of appeal for me. I'm really just looking for a zippy little car that can scoot to complement my RS6, not a full on racer!

cornishmoocher

This isn't an interview for Match.com so you don't have to explain...

Schmoocher has it right, IF you are going to do it, get the REAL mini cooper, not a re-badged, butchered and lowered 318ti...

Or get a 1972-1973 NR600 Honda

DuckWingDuck
June 23rd, 2008, 18:24
Haha, ya, that's the thing, I don't want it to get to the point where I'm rolling around in a bucket of rusted bolts either. Point taking re: the 318 and honestly, it never really entered my mind though this JCW version seems mildly amusing if only for its over the topness. And I know I've mentioned this before and will surely get more rassing from the peanut gallery but, BMW (and by extension Mini-Cooper) interiors have always left me wanting as they are in a word, quite shit.

All of that said, I think that reason will more than likely prevail which would point me towards a '05/'06 Elise somewhere in the neighborhood of $30k for a car that will be fun to drive and not too heavy on the wallet!

No worries, Lotus is your best bet then. Spoke to a Lotus owner at the Audi event at Miller Motorsports in Salt Lake. He absolutely loves it. He also had the car at the LV Audi event and was spanking us around the track (especially in the turns).

DuckWingDuck
August 2nd, 2008, 03:43
Ben - Ya, the Evora is something that I've thought about for a while but...

1. Not really looking for a brand new car.
2. The Evora is 1350kg, almost a whopping 500kg more than the Elise! I already have a heavy car in the RS6, don't need another one.
3. The Evora is a 2+2, again, as I have a wonderful sedan, this car is really just a commute/fun car, not a car for taking a lot of people out.

Now, if I were contemplating selling my RS6 and replacing it with a single car, then the evora would instantly leap to the top of my list.

If this thread doesn't die I'm going to crap my pants!!!

Respectfully, this question should have been asked in a Lotus forum. Elise or Exige? No one cares! Do you want a convertible or not? Done - Question answered. It seems like your mind is made up anyway so there was no need to solicit 100 other opinions that haven't had anything to do with current Lotus models and instead have only been suggestions on other types and brands of cars, motorcycles and even future cars.

Sorry for the bad mood. But this thread which has nothing to do with Audi is quite out of hand and going nowhere. :noshake:

3.5 Blitzen feels a strong BM urge.
4. Thread dies, kinda.
5. Opps, Ben revives 'Toy' thread via seagull management.
6. Blitzen "craps his pants".
7. Benman moves thread to proper non RS6 area.
8. Schmoocher is scared of the dark and nearly cries online.
9. Ducky still wants his new non RS6 toy.

I originally thought that the Hornburg Santa Monica car for $32K was an interesting deal and that I could probably get it for <$30K out the door but they've been pretty hard at bargaining and considering that I'll be on the road for a few more weeks, I'll probably start to more seriously think about it when I get home but also casting a wider net as prices in our market tend to be a bit more inflated.
