Audi A4 2.0 TDI - 906 miles from Paris to Madrid on single tank

Last month Audi invited a team of 12 journalists to race from Paris to Madrid in an Audi A4 2.0 TDI. To win the race, the journalists had to average the best fuel-economy while avoiding filling up their tank during the trip.

The winners, Nicholas Demberville and Richard Tallet averaged a fuel-economy of 53mpg with their A4 which is powered by a 2.0 TDI 4-cylinder common-rail diesel engine producing 143-hp. Completing the 782 mile trip, the two managed to extract a total of 900 miles on a single tank with a couple of fuel-saving tricks and strategies.

Other teams were not too far behind averaging a fuel consumption of 52, 51 and 50 miles to the gallon.

Google says:

53 miles per gallon = 4.43801101 liters per 100km

I'm really impressed with this result. Audi has shown their worth with Commonrail.

Try beating this result BMW ! :hihi:

Outstanding results but I am curious what mph they were averaging to achieve those figures? It is not mentioned in the article. Perhaps 60mph? ;)

4.4l/100km, that is great for the car of that class... !

Recently in Australia some one achived !!! 3.8l/100km !!! average with Peugeot 308 1.6 HDI..., but I can't say what were the conditions and enviorment of that test...

...so, Audi is best, of course ! :D

right question ... I can get about 29 mpg with 3.0 TDI in Q7, however it has to be driven about 80 km/h with feather touch on the gas pedal .... running wot on A3 at 200 km/h nets about 14-15 mpg .... :nono:

Thought I'd convert that to Imperial miles per gallon (that's how my UK head is wired :mech: ) - that's a whopping 64 mpg. Still won't sound like my petrol V8 :D

By way of comparison BMW quote a similar figure for the 318d (143hp). The Sunday Times in the UK recently did a test of a BMW 520d (177hp) vs Toyota Prius on a trip from London to Geneve on mixed roads. BMW came out better on economy that the Pious did.
