Kerso,

Are you not commenting on any future models to be offered this gearbox. Surely you could think of one or two, I know I can. ;)

One more link HERE! (http://www.motorauthority.com/news/technical/audi-upgrades-s-tronic-to-handle-more-power/)

What about the R8? R-tronic or the new DSG???
I am not good with mechanics, is this unit same/similar as in the M3 DSG/DCT??

I wonder why only quattro - is the Torsen diff built into that housing too or is it some kind of marketing thing?

Not sure if 550Nm is enought for new 290ps 3.0 TDi - depends if that engine makes its extra power through torque or revs

So, this is why there isn't A5 3.0 TDI quattro Tiptronic on offer for so long...

Rage

translation worked pretty well.

Ill bet the s-tronic improves 0-60 times by 0.2sec over manual.

Would be cool to see launch control too in the S/RS models.

I have ordered A4 may be 2 weeks ago with the tiptronic gearbox.
What are the other differences between The tiptronic gearbox and the new DSG, not taking into account fast gear changes? I meen difference in driving, not technical ones.

should we expect the R8 to go with DSG or stick to the R-tronic transmission? (either V8 or V10 engines)

RXBG

i don't think the DSG layout works with the R8/ something about gearbox location.

Does anyone know if the DSG gearbox is lighter than the R-tronic gearbox?

Heavier... In fact a lot heavier(new 7speed S-Tronic)... 30kg or something...

Leadfoot
March 21st, 2008, 15:38
30Kgs, is that not the difference between a 6speed manual and it, what is the difference between the two in the R8 gearboxes (manula and R-Tronic). Anyway 30kgs isn't that bad, it's no worse than BMW's similar system.

So much inside information here. It may be a little heavier than the 6 speed auto, but the improvements in fuel economy and performance will far outweigh some extra weight.

And it doesn't look like it will work for the R8, the DSG is much too long.

The new transverse 7spd DSG weighs only 70kg, as opposed to the 93kg of the old wet clutch 6spd DSG.

You won't see this particular DSG is the R8, b/c it is incorporated in the quattro AWD system. That means you won't even see it on FWD or old chassis (with the driveshafts in a different place) Audis.

It's hard to compare the weight to the R-tronic because, again, this DSG is part of a gearbox that incorportates AWD differentials and shafts. The R-tronic is just an automized manual transaxle gearbox.

This is not that transaxle 120kg Getrag gearbox from the Getrag website, which probably included the diff anyways.

@Arslanof
DSG is as smooth as an automatic, but as fast as a sequencial gearbox. If you're going to go clutch-pedal-less, and DSG is an option, there is no reason why you would choose a torque converter automatic.

Evo magazine have (allegedly) driven an S5 with the new 7spd S-tronic.

http://www.evo.co.uk/news/evonews/219657/audi_s5.html

Its more a 'tech' report than driving impressions though.

Already read it but there seems to be mistakes, EVO are quoting 200ms in normal driving and 100ms in sport/manual. That's miles away form the original DSG and the 30ms that other sources have quoted for the new S/Tronic 7speed.

KresoF1

I think it is actually real report about S-Tronic with 7speed since Nissan GT-R shifting speed(fastest) is also 100ms...

Rage

Part of the confusion must rest with the definition of a 'shift'

I guess different manufacturers use different definitions.

Most probably. Does the shift start when the lever is pulled or is it when the first clutch is disengaged. That argument is up for debate as to what is the correct measurement.

Great news. Im ordering a S5 tiptronic, should I wait for this new transmission? Will it worth the months of wait and anxiety? Do you think that six months from now will be available?

Good question... First normal Audi that will receive new S-Tronic with 7speed will be(Q5 put aside) new S4. Audi just introduced Tiptronic for A5 3.0TDI Quattro so, it seems to me that we are not very near to S-Tronic introduction...

Personally, I would wait...

I think the same. I should wait but one thing that concerns me is that by the time S5 with S TRONIC comes out, maybe early 2009, prices of european cars in US will suffer an important increase because of the fall of the us dollar vs euro.

I would wait couple of months to see if Audi announces the plan for Stronic in their cars, otherwise I rather wait for RS5 (July 2009) than for a S5 Stronic in January. :vhmmm:

Wait for the RS5. It will be a beast.

Considering that the M3 is $58k. How much will the RS5 be in the states considering the S5 is $50k?

Probably 62k to 64k base price, depends on the engine proposal.

Around 70k - 72k loaded w/ stronic and all the extras.

No doubt about it...the M3 is very compeitvely priced (albeit without many options included) in the states.

Yes, M3 is very competitively priced but when you add the extras like sequential transmission, premium sound, and all the others extras it gets around 68k.

For example,
BMW M Double-clutch Transmission with Drivelogic (7 speed) which competes with Audi Longitudinal 7 spd S-TRONIC is a US$2.900 option.

I hope Audi make s-tronic standard not optional!!
