I saw it was presented in the new VW, first longitudinal engine-6 speeds DSG.

Notice the torque capacity, 550Nm. That means it will work with the soon to be launched v6Bi-turbo diesel that will first be seen in the Q5.

this S-Tronic which will be shown in the new Q5 - will be a 7 Speed S-Tronic - not 6

i suspect the Q5 will be intro'd in nyc later this month. along with the new 3.0 TDI.

Anyone able to translate? If torque capacity is up to 550NM then i hope it is introduced to Audi S/RS line.

In a recent interview by editor Paul Harris of Audi Driver (1) with Audi development engineer Michael Schafer in charge of double-clutch transmissions stated that his team at Audi was developing a version of the six-ratio double-clutch gearbox to mate up with the longitudinal engines in Audis will be in production by August of 2008. :applause: Furthermore, long-term testing of A4s with S-Tronic gearboxes has been taking place and expect the 2009 line-up to include this option.

Hopefully it will be a 7 speed unit. All that development time and one gear too few, not good.

To be totally honest with you, I am not that convinced that there is that big of a benefit with having 7 gears over having only 6.

If you look at the M3 part of the improvement in acceleration with DCT over 6MT is due to 7 gears over 6. Dont ask me how.....something to do with taller/shorter gears???

I am not doubting the fact that in acceleration 7 is better than 6 gears, but on the road I don't see the benefit and remember this comment of mine are based on both being DSG style boxes.

Apart from acceleration, a 7speed DSG shares the advantage with CVT, that it can keep the engine rpms low for variable speeds, thanks to a wider selection of ratios.
The new 7speed DSG is said to save 1liter/100km, which is significant. The dry cluches, and lower friction design certainly play a role, but the larger selection of gear ratios as well.

The new 7speed gearbox is lighter as well. There's not 'that' much involved in adding a cog to a gear axle. Especially if you don't have to bother with gear lever linkage, like a manual.

Yep. Audi has a problem with making its powerful engines run high RPM for no reason. The S8 with 450 horsepower runs about 3,000 RPM to go 75 mph. Maybe a 7 speed gearbox can finally convince Audi to make a real overdrive just for cruising. For example running the same speed @ 3,000 RPM will have the S8 use over 50 horsepower less.
