View Full Version : Has anyone painted the back Lic plate area w/ lights body color?

I know that the NA cars do not have functional rear fogs lights and the black area that houses the two red lights on the back would look better if it were body colored. I think I saw a picture of an A6 (or RS6?) that had this area body colored.

1. Will it hold paint?

2. How will it look? Can someone photoshop the attached photo Avus Silver for me?

3. Is there a pre-manufactured or replacement insert/panel that comes in the correct color or can be painted?

I think this would further update the look of the '03 along with the LED tail lights that I just installed.

TIA

If you buff it a little bit, I'm sure that you'll be able to get the paint on there. The LED tails look pretty hot, can you take a night picture? Also, how difficult is it to install?

Interesting idea, may make it look even wider. I like the LED's!

BTW, you sure your rear fogs dont work?

IMHO i think it will look terrible if you pain the plate surrounding but as far as the rear fogs in the USDM cars they do work and they both light up actually

Mine don't. I wonder what I am doing wrong. Mine don't appear to have any bulbs in there. I'll try again in a few minutes.

LED Lights were a 10 minute job per side and I'm an idiot...

You are correct! I never knew how to get the rear fog lights on (red lights around the lic. plate holder). I pulled out the 'ol manual and rear that you have to pull the light knob out TWICE for the rears to come on and ONCE for just the front fog lights.

I will have to see if this is something I would still want to do or not in light of this "new" discovery.

Personally, I think it'd be cool if you could replace that whole black trim piece with carbon fiber :D

There was somebody a while ago who posted a link to a site that would sell customized bits of carbon fiber, I wonder if they could do it...

I suck but is this what your asking?

You know, that's not a half bad effort and I was driving behind the new Accord this morning coming into the office and I think that this sort of look has the same problem as the accord, if you matched the colour to the body, then the back end looks too empty..

i think this is what you want, but you will need euro insert to make it look decent ;)

Installation took about 5 min. Here's the seller I bought mine from:

Duck, I bought mine from Goingfast on eBay. The lights are TUV approved and came from Germany. The instructions are in German, but there are photos.

Simple really:

1. Open trunk

2. Open lid on right or left side of trunk (where the jack is on the driver's side and air pump on the passenger's side)

3. Don't disconnect the battery as they describe in the instructions. That will cause more issues than anything. Just don't have the car running or key in the ignition.

4. Pull the plug on the tail light from inside the trunk.

5. Unbolt the (4) nuts holding in the tail light.

6. Push the tail light out.

7. Line up the new tail light's stud/screw ends with the holes from the outside of the car. I connected the harness back up to the new tail light since it is easier with the light out.

8. Before you put the nuts back on and tighten up, be sure the rubber seals are seated properly all around the new tail light, esp. by the trunk lid area. There is a big seal there that can fold if you don't pay attention.

9. Tighten up the nuts and repeat on the other side.

Enjoy!

Oh yeah! Thanks for that. I like the look and esp. like that Euro insert. Where can I get one of those Sportec panels?

Ohh... I even have a body shop that still has Avus Silver paint left over from some repair work on my other RS6....

The part is so cheap I may just go for it.

Awesome find... THANK YOU!

Just got an email back form the body shop. They can paint the Euro insert to Avus Silver and install it, no problem I just bought one. I can always switch back and sell it here or on eBay if I decide I don't like the look.

Stay tuned...

Damn you copper!!! I was going to buy it too, if you decide to go with the silver option, let me know. Also, when you get this part, please take a better resolution picture than the ebay pic. thanks!

Kievskiy - you really should just drop your US plate. I don't put mine on. This has the added benefit of letting you drive the toll roads for free!! Kidding of course.
