It's interesting that when Audi adapted their Q7 3.0TDi for the US market it's power and torque went up ever so slightly, but with the 335d and X53.0sd the power has dropped by almost 20hp.

Cali emissions regs are probably the culprit. It doesn't necessarily mean that the Audi has less emissions, just different emissions.

Case in point. K-series Elise engines had to be swapped for Honda K20As to pass in CA. However the Cali compliant Gen II Viper had to be detuned to 378bhp to pass in the UK (hence the quoted figure in the back of Autocar during that era).

The Audi diesel is also at a lower specific output, so this could also be a factor.
