View Full Version : I'm almost ashamed to ask this...(tiptronic question)

Despite being an engineer, and moderately intelligent (at times), and having read the howstuff works article at least three times...I still don't quite get how an automatic transmission works....exactly. I've always suspected something was up with the transmission since I got the 35K maintenance on her...a few rough shifts every so often very rarely. As of last week, she straight up disengages and essentially neutral drops herself in both 2nd and 3rd more often than not. For a few days I drove strictly in tip mode, and it was better...until about Saturday...now she'll slip out of gear in 2nd on just about any rev range past 2500.

What exactly would cause behavior like this? it is not 100% consistant. two/three out of ten shifts will be smooth like they're supposed to be. but other times they're moderately rough to straight up "oh crap I think the transmission just fell out" (the first time this seriously happened, I was...uhh...merging, yeah...merging, and had her floored. disengages at 2500rpm....re-engages at 5500rpm and literally shook me so hard my seatbelt locked up). I can't floor her or put her in sport mode at all (or the transmission really will fall out!). Kind of defeats the purpose...right?

Side question: I realize torque converters are what robs us of more HP...does anyone make a more 'high performance' torque converter that gives me more to the transmission?

Go to wiki for all the cool pictures: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automatic_transmission

Since you are in California, you are really close to the following:

1. Wicked Motorsports near Los Angeles www.wicked-motorsports.com (http://www.wicked-motorsports.com)

2. 2Bennett Audimotive near Sacramento www.2bennett.com (http://www.2bennett.com)

3. 3zero3 Motorsports in Colorado www.3zero3motorsports.com (http://www.3zero3motorsports.com)

Each of those places does a ton of work for the S4 tips. You could call and see what they can do for the RS6 transmission.

the torque converters are no longer fitted to modern auto transmissions. rather a "torque converter clutch" is fitted. this has the ability to "lock up" when directed to by the computer to bypass the toraue converter altogether. our transmissions can do this, but the modern 6-sp zf's do it more often. helps economy and heat etc.

any idea why this would only be a problem sometimes on some gears (namely 1->2 and 2->3) at some specific rpm ranges? I've been told valve plate, but from what I can understand that wouldn't affect only certain gears...

Just toss in a manual transmission ;)
