RS6 have chassis numbers starting from ......900001 to diffrence them from normal A6 derived models which shares the same 4B chassis code (they start from .....000001)
Yours would have been number 2331 of that model year. Your car was built on the 29th of January 2003.

2003 Model year production started in July 2002.
by end of July 2002 539 RS6 had been allocated chassis numbers. Not necessarily meaning built finished cars.
by end of August '02 608 RS6 total (only additional 69 allocated)
end Sept 02 = 903 in total allocated
end Oct 02 =1326 " "
end Nov 02 =1906
end Dec 02 = 2294
end Jan 03 = 2562 **
end Feb 03 = 3070

Model year production for 2003 finished at May 31st 2003. There is not final chassis number for the end of May (the final chassis number for 2003 model cars).

Just ask at your local Audi centre for a printoff from Etka from your chassis number. It might help if you buy something to avoid the dissaproving scowls from the parts guy. (you need the parts deptartment for Etka printoffs).

one further detail you require is that the vin "restarted" for the '04 model year.

i.e. 4b-3-900001 on 1 july 2002 - highest vin allocated 4b-3-905000
and 4b-4-9000001 on 1st july 2003 - highest vin allocated also 4b-4-905000

2005 model year cars

Just to add to the confusion some 2005 model year cars were assembled from April 2004 onward. Mostly RS6 plus production :vhmmm:
There also is a difference in RS6 and RS6 plus chassis numbers.
RS6 uses the usual ..4B_5n900001 onward sequence
RS6 PLUS uses ..4B_5n999001 onward sequence.

Your car is a pukka USA spec RS6 (in Mugello) built on 27th June 2003. North American models continued 2003 model numbering after european spec moved onto 2004 model year.
It may be a typo on your part but your vin should start WUA... (manufacter = quattro GMBH), not WAU.. (Audi)

No, later than that.
Turns out Audi (or quattro gmbh) dont build / finish their cars in chassis number sequence.
Probably because they are part handbuilt / low volume.
Your car (..4542) was built on 20th June - strangely, 15 days after the following chassis number (..4543)
Out of curiosity I had a look at the numbers close to yours.
These are the chassis numbers to build dates either side of your number.
