Okay, I figured that it was about time for a new thread since we've pretty much exhausted the LA Auto Show thread...

Here's what I got from the SCCAudi website:

And based on these routes, there are no road closures anymore (well, at least that I was ble to glean from the Caltrans site, although it only gave me information on highways/freeways and not local roads). In any event, I am out of town on Sunday until 5 Dec, how about 15 Dec? That's about a month away and should give everybody plenty of time to check their calendar.

Here's the SCCAudi's Julian Run page: http://www.sccaudi.com/articles.asp?id=175

Normally I'd be in, but December is not looking doable since I'm campaigning for a certain Congressman right now. ;)

January would work much better for me, but don't let me stop you boys from having fun! BTW, was nice meeting you Greg.

Ben, great pleasure on my end as well. I've got some friends coming into town for Thanksgiving and I might very well just head down there this weekend to give it a quick little spin. I just tossed out mid December for the hell of it, I'm sure folks are also cool with after the New Year.

I am game for the new year - I will be slower since I will have the winter tires on for ski season.... That is if there is any snow this year:snow:

I'm game as well Greg. Let's set an actual date. I think the 15th is too early for such a run. However, we can do some smaller GTG on that day? I recommend early January on a Saturday. All meet for breakfast as our starting point in Temecula and hit the roads from there. Hopefully, the cool weather and fog (maybe some light rain) will make it look good out there by then.

DuckWingDuck
November 21st, 2007, 06:38
Not a problem, I'm fairly committed to getting out there this weekend, so I will report back on what I find and from there we can set a date!

Gang, took my RS6 and some friends out to Julian yesterday. Unfortunately, we missed parts of the 2nd leg but was able to get the final bit in (Mesa Grande roads). What an exhilirating ride. All roads are open! Now we just need to nail down the time.

Audiphile
November 26th, 2007, 01:51
Yes Greg, "Mesa Grande" has long been considered the "rite of passage" for Audi Owners. You have to drive it once in your lifetime! Let us plan for the first part of January. How is the weekend of 01/04 -01/05 or the two weeks after that? Is everyone ok to work with these dates? I should have my new 20" rims on my S6 by then.

01/04-01/05 is perfect for me as well! Time for the other local guys to chime in!

Also, apparently there's also the Glendora Mountain Road (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=en&geocode=&time=&date=&ttype=&saddr=glendora+mountain+rd+and+e+sierra+madre+ave&daddr=34.238202,-117.831802+to:e+sierra+madre+ave+and+n+san+gabriel +canyon&mra=dpe&mrcr=0&mrsp=1&sz=12&via=1&sll=34.155852,-117.889824&sspn=0.198305,0.320663&ie=UTF8&ll=34.156989,-117.849998&spn=0.198302,0.320663&z=12&om=1) that's kind of fun. Richard - I'm game for something on the 15th if people are around?

Audiphile

I am flexible. So, both dates work. Glendora Mountain Run? Nothing like Julian in the Winter though.

Is this the 15th of January I assume? That is a weekday. How abou the weekend before that? Julian or Glendora. Julian is bit more scenic although it might be burned to a crisp.

By the way, Congrats to Audi for being named "Car Company of the Year" by the British magazine Car

November 29th, 2007, 16:07
Richard, n/m, I thought you were talking about running around Glendora on 15 Dec! When I drove Julian this past weekend, it was alright, nothing too horrible... As it is, I am okay with either route. I suspect Glendora might be closer for most of us?

Greg, the 15th looks tough. I thought you were in China? Too much going on with Christmas and work, But the first weekend of January or the second weekend of January looks good. Actually, anyday during the period looks good for me. I wouldn't mind going during the week if that works for everyone. We can do Julian and Glendora during this period Everyone give their open dates for this period.

I said my car needed me more!! Haha, things got shifted around and my trip got rescheduled and I'm in town for a bit. I'm down for all options but during the week tends to be bad for me as I tend to be tied to my office :D

Let's consider mid - January then, after the 15th. If we set a date far ahead, there should be NO EXCUSES guys to not all agree. Let us not set so far ahead that my RS6 will be here. Also, at the end of January, Bogie (my S6) will be sporting some new shoes - 20" Rims that are on the way from Inglostadt just for him. Required a special order.

Here is the way to do it: Everyone throw out your dates that are good for you for late January. I am up for any day (weekday or weekend) and we will choose the date that accomodates the most drivers. Ben, Greg, Nick, and I will then set the agenda for the run including meeting, food, etc. How is that for micro-management or is that macro?

DBLIPA
December 4th, 2007, 05:09
I might be able to make an event sometime mid-to-late January, and will be coming from Long Beach. Please post details, and I'll chime in as to whether I can make it. Thanks...:addict:

Yes, like Greg said, I am flexible, but I do would like to get a date down. My goal would be second half of January. So, everyone has 15 days to play with. In the next week please give Greg and I your dates and how many Audiphiles are interested.

Great S4ski! I'll be heading to Mammoth about two weeks after you. Let me know the conditions after you get back!

Ok, everyone start replying to this date. So far it is the 19th of January for the "Road to Julian" Drive.:rs6kiss: So far Ben, myself, and S4ski. Greg, Nick, etc. and everyone else? Once we have a count, Ben, Greg, and I will set the details and route. Guys, I recommend the same route as SCC ACNA does traditionally each year or we can skip Harrah's so we have more time in Julian. E-mail m your suggestions.

Ben, I still want a S6 banner! Tell you friend to create one already!:mech: The S6 deserves one! It is amazing (yes I am bias)

DuckWingDuck
December 6th, 2007, 07:24
I tried to do the SCC ACNA route, at least the "leg 2" portion of it. I.e. I hightailed it to Harrah's as fast as I could, took a quick pit stop. I think that holds the most appeal. Run up to the mountain and then the Mesa Grande road.

DuckWingDuck and local So Cal Guys,

I had originally planned on showing up but I have the Carlsbad 1/2 marathon that morning. I will have to join everyone next time.

Have fun, take photos, watch for helicopters, be safe!

Is there anyone else besides me that is close that can do a recon mission to make sure the roads are somewhat clear, open, CHP free? If not, I can call around to some of the local cycle shops (Paul or Isaac @ GP motorcycles) to ask if they know road conditions.

god, I'm having serious thoughts about trading my beast in once the Audi warranty is up in April. That S5 looks so nice in white/burgundy. eep what am I saying. :rs6kiss:

DuckWingDuck
December 18th, 2007, 00:33
Having driven the S5 a few times, I have to say that it is a wonderful car. But I would say you're in for a shock if you trade the RS6 for an S5. It'll still be fun even if you don't drive your RS6! The more the merrier.

not to sidetrack the thread -- I know. In my ideal world I'd be at gmgracing dropping $19K on upgrades. I don't want to give up my beast but I feel once the Audi warranty is out its going to nickle and dime me to death.

Details will be posted as we get closer to the day - Currently it is Harrah's Rincon in Valley Center @ 10:30AM. The meeting place is at the "TOP" of the multi-level parking structure in back of the hotel/casino. You cannot miss it. Just drive into the back of the hotel and go up the ramp to the top of the parking structure. Time is between 10:30-11:00. Gives you time to crab coffee and drop some coins in the slots if you like. Greg, Ben, and I will coordinate the event. Please RSVP here or directly or to Greg (see above e-mail address) that you are coming. Thanks and we look forward to seeing the local SoCal rs6.com gang.

DBLIPA - Yes, please click on "leg 2" in the first post of the thread. That basically describes the julian run from Harrah's to the Red Barn. We're meeting at Harrah's at 1030, which means we'll reach the Red Barn no later than 1230, you can choose to drive home from there and be back in the LBC way before 430p!

Thanks for the info, and the timing seems like it will work. Sorry I didn't check the beginning of the thread for the route . See ya' on Sunday...

BTW, does anyone know how many RS6's are in Southern California? Also, who in SoCal plan to get the new RS6 saloon if/when it arrives in the U.S?

I am still currently sick but will be there on Sunday, just please do not think I am being rude by not shaking anyone's hand. :D

I will probably go in the back of the group (slower lot) since I do not want to throw up all over my interior! But I'll still be there.

Everyone attending tomorrow's Drive, please note that the parking structure is in the rear of the Casino. Drive to the top completely. Generally, there are no cars there whatsoever. There was a bimmer once, but we told him to leave as it would ruin the scenary.

Oh, that leaves me out. BH Audi has got me driving a 325i :nana: while my beast is being fixed. I'd *love* to come up and just hang out before or after the run. grab a bite or what not. no way in hell im gonna muck up the run with my piss poor bimmer rental.

sorry I've been scarce, dwd -- I got laid off two weeks ago and now I'm twiddling my thumbs waiting for Fox to formally extend me a job offer. Ugh...corporate red tape! anyway -- are there any non-driving plans before or after the driving?

Hey all, we're still meeting at 1030 at the top of the rear parking structure. We will be having lunch at the Red Barn (end of leg 2), so if you want to meet us there, I think we will be there around 1230?

I also enjoyed the excursion, conversation with some really nice people, and the pizza at the Red Barn (no heartburn yet!). It was a sweet treat to see a gaggle of "Beasts" and "SoCal's" S6 with the cool running lights.

Next time we need 10-15 RS6's --- I'm sure there are that many in Southern California :rs6kiss: Perhaps we'll even get some of the R8's that have been ordered!!

Fabulous day: great road, perfect weather, great cars (of course) and a group of really fine and friendly drivers. Thanks to DuckWingDuck for organizing and to the others for coming out. Much appreciated!

And Benman...thank you for showing me the back way home on route 79 to Temecula. It was a pleasure to share the road with you again.

Cheers, all.

I've always liked the Red Barn and glad to hear no heart burn was encountered. :D

AWESOME photos of the group!

So there is an S6, i think, in the middle (SOCAL's).
We all know about the Ron Paul RS6 there (BENMAN's).
Who's are the others?
DuckWingDuck, RS642ski, DBLIPA?

Great photos guys! The scenery looks typical Julian - awesome. I'm sorry I missed you guys as well and was very very bummed not to be able to make it, but had a family situation arise as I explained. Anway, I am on for the next run! Also, guys consider another great route - Angeles Crest Highway/Forest to the Devil's Bowl. Great run with one long straight where I am sure the RS6s and the great looking S6s can go all out! Let me know.

We should definitely put together another little trot in a few months, when Steve gets his awesome summer rims back on!

By the way, I'm surprised nobody's mentioned them but I think DBLIPA's custom RS6 pedal are totally awesome.

I noticed those and wondered if they where OEM or aftermarket? If aftermarket, how close to the OEM are they for the PLUS?

There has to be an CAD engineer on this site or someone that knows one that can fab up some. The logo would the tough task.

Angeles Crest I have heard, from ProItalia guys in Glendora, is the one of the best roads around. I was thinking that the Ortega Highway (74) was the next route.

DuckWingDuck

Ortega is definitely fun but we should do something closer to Richard and the LA guys. Us orange county/SD guys should troop up there once before we do something down here again :D

Angeles Crest Hwy over the mountains is a classic drive...once the winter snow melts and the road reopens, of course. Need to watch for CHP there, though, since it is heavily patrolled. The run down the other side to the Devil's Punchbowl is also lots of fun and usually wide open, and there's a fun return from there to SR 14 to LA via Mt. Emma and Soledad Cyn. roads or across SR 138 to I-15 to points East.

Northern Ventura County also has some outstanding backroads with lots of fine twisties and canyon carving.

For other ideas in the mountains north of L.A., check out the links at this site:

Thanks for posting the pics DWD. Julian was a great day.:revs:

A bit more looking at the map seems to me that Angeles Crest Hwy is just an extension off the Glendora Mountain Road and in fact they share the first stretch. In my map, we double back towards Glendora while Angeles Crest Highway continues on towards Wrightwood.

Many thanks, DWD. In 2005 I started a thread on the pedals: http://rs6.com/forum/showthread.php?t=7195

Some pics are shown in the original posts. Pedals were made by Ultimate Pedals (ultimatepedals.com), and I already have paid the setup fee for the RS6 logo. The painting was done by a friend of mine, and that task was a chore. The pedals in their unpainted form also look great. The quality of the product from Ultimate Pedals is top-notch, and I highly recommend the company.

Cheers,
