i read today in Autobild that BMW works on a Lighter, less-power-loss X-Drive version for next-gen 5series. Why is audi not doing this? Audi knows that they are behind BMW in performance and i think they know the reasons: QUATTRO!. they have to build a lighter version with lesser power loss too. what do you think, or has anyone information that this will happen?

I'd think the engineers at audi are allways working on making things lighter, better and/or more effecient. And maybe you should have looked up the weight difference of the BMW X drive system in comparison to audi's Quattro.

A4 3.2fsi 1490 kg.
A4 3.2fsiQ 1540 kg.

330i 1455 kg.
330Xi 1555 kg.

A6 2.4 1525 kg.
A6 2.4Q 1625 kg.

525i 1485 kg.
525xi 1600 kg.

BMW does not specialize in AWD thus that system is not perfected.

Well M3_dude if you were to read their advertising you won't know that. Clearly someone needs to tell BMW.

Noone's trying to bring down BMW's X Drive system. The original post was saying that Audi should build a lighter quattro system with less power loss. When we look at the examples above Audi's quattro system was 50kg and 15kg lighter respectfully. :hahahehe:

What's it like 20% of the BMW brand sales now are AWD? Must be getting close with X3 and X5 on top of the xi models.

To say that is stupid as it suggests BMW release ill conceived vehicles on the market which I wouldn't think they'd do. And as leadie says there is a lot of guff from BMW on how good their system is.

I guess the same goes for the turbo then?

One of the heaviest parts must be the axel that goes from the engine to the rear wheels.

Now, BMW has got that by default since all their cars are RWD.

How come that their AWD system still are much heavier than quattro when the opposite seems like a must?
