View Full Version : How to Fit LED DRLs to RS4 B7

After a bit of research I settled on SMT mounted LEDs.

The websites I viewed were http://www.superbrightleds.com/ and http://www.v-leds.com I bought from V-Leds as they were cheaper and more importantly had what I wanted

What arrived , took 9 days to arrive from US, had a customs charge of £12 that the postoffice failed to ask for, so a bit of a result

I decided to see if the DRL Lights were monitored by the car, so I fitted the LEDs WITHOUT the resistor. That appears to be a mistake.

Thanks for reading ... I am going to get the car reset as when i start it thinks the left bulb is gone, BUT ONLY when you start. If you hit the check button, if says all OK.

Thanks

Good work. Thanks for the write up Andy.

Nice work, and good thing you got the right type of bulb that has LEDs on all sides to fill up the reflector properly. Anyways (May not be allowed in Europe due to local laws), but the way I drive during the day is with my fog lights on only. The fogs are 3000K HID yellow and look clean day or night. If anyone wants to know how to do this mod, let me know because I don't know if any Audi's allow you to turn on only your fogs without your low beams turning on.

Great writeup with pics! Excellent work.

Is it possible to replace the bulbs in the fogs with DRL-type bulbs?

Is it possible to replace the bulbs in the fogs with DRL-type bulbs?

Any bulb can be used as DRL light bulb (not saying they all are the best type). For my car, what I did to have the fogs as my DRLs took a little work but overall was pretty simple. First and foremost see if your fogs can be turned on without turning on the HID projectors. If this can not be achieved then you'll have to find another way. In my case I first disabled the DRL module, and then spliced my fog light wire into the turn signal (parking lamp wire). This way anytime I just turned on the parking lamps I also had the ability to turn on my fogs only. (You can still have full access to the fog lamps and turn them on and off by simply using the fog light switch, and NO, not everytime you use your turn signals will the fogs flash as well).

Little update

It seems that VAGCOM shows no error to reset, So the bulb out message appears and then goes out immediately. I happy to live with this for the absolutely cool look. BTW it is totally necessary to use the resistors, otherwies the bulb out icon will stay.

As I'm not too profressional with electrics, could you specify, please, the list of parts (in details) you used. Thanks.

Waiting to make my baby shine....

Note, after testing you can NOT avoid the initial bulb out warning when starting the engine. once running it goes.

Andy nice write up.

Have you gone into Vag-Com and activated the basic setting, this may stop the bulb out coming on.
Turn the basic setting on then back off again.

Daz had a good look and there was nothing to reset etc... What seems to happen, if the DRL is 'on' at startup a pulse is sent and thus the bulb out will appear.. The message is for the complete light as shown in the pix above. However if the DRL is 'off' at startup no messages ever appears. The conclusion from Tyresmoke is that a lower value resistor might be requires 10 or 6 ohms, So I have ordered them and will test.

I wonder if soldering the connections would remedy this as this would change the cable resistance?

Andyuk911
October 4th, 2007, 19:49
That would make no difference as the connections are very good.

I aam going to try a 10 ohm resistor as that is nearer to the bulb current draw of 1.73 amps.

That might be good enough to fool the car on startup.

have u fitted led sidelights yet, if u did how did u get the lights out and did u have the same issue as the drl with th dis shown blown bulb

Andyuk911
October 5th, 2007, 08:30
no, I have xenon white normal side bulbs, which look fine. you just pull them out and replace the bulb as normal. 14th picture you can just see them at the top.

October 5th, 2007, 11:07
u just pull them out or turn them, wasnt sure how to take them out. didnt want to break them. lol

For the sides, just pull..... for the DRL turn anti clock

hey andy...i think that came out very nice..couple of questions though

referring to sparkhills page he mentions that he no longer recommends doing the mod because of overheating issues...but i presume that the LED bulbs dont generate anywhere near as much heat as the ones he used but i wanted to get an update of how yours were holding up

also, would you say that this actually gave you a lot more light output or is it just for the cool factor??...i painted my housings flat black and i could actually use some help with output and would consider doing this if it does help

lastly, would you mind going a little deeper into how to set up the load resistors..do u just strip the rubber casing of the wire and set each side in the resistor and close it?...i want to do this correctly and would appreciate any guidance

thanks

Andyuk911
October 10th, 2007, 10:18
The SMT LEDs generate no heat, so that is not a problem.

They are brighter than the original 21watt bulbs and obviously a xenon white in colour, almost an exact match.

The resistor nothing to it, just clip the wires using the blue locks, you do NOT need to strip the wire. Just make sure it is in the centre Then the two wires just come out to the resistor as shown.

NOTE there are problems at startup as mentioned... I am about to try a different resistor 10 ohm

havabooz
October 10th, 2007, 11:37
thanks...sounds easy enough...keep us posted on the new resistors and how they work for you..

just curious why you went with SMT instead of the cluster bulbs on superbrightleds.com...the others look a lot nicer when they are off...these look a bit unfinished...any special reason?

Andyuk911
October 10th, 2007, 12:31
I thought the SMT would be brighter and last. ... the only time you can really see them is in the day, and then they are on.

Andyuk911
October 10th, 2007, 15:22
Well, the resistors turned up so I pop to do this lunch time.

A quick test and wow no bulb out ..

So 10 Ohm resistors seem to do the job.

THEN DISASTER !!! OH no when I was putting the assembly back,

:vgrumpy:

Hello is that an LED in my Light ........

DON'T PANIC !!!!!!!!!!!!

How the hell am I going to get that out ..........

Did not take me more than 5 minutes, thank god ...

http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x313/Andyuk9112/LED%20RS4/Picture071.jpg

So the only thing to test, is to see how hot the resistor gets and to see if they will need bolting down.

Thanks for reading
