Except for that crease ont the side, it looks just like the B7.

It is interesting to see it has adopted the pillar style of the popular A6 avant, which is a change to the B7 Avant.
I dont think we can tell right now, but i expect it'll look pretty good. Audi avants always do.
And why would you expect it to look different to the Saloon? Does the 3 series touring look different? Does the Passat estate? Does the C class wagon? No so why would the B8 Avant?
The saloons pretty special looking for starters so why change it?

I thought it was an A6 avant at first.

You can't see anything. A covered up B8 sedan would look similar to the B7 sedan. But as we have seen more pics of the B8 A4 sedan, it has become obvious that there is a big difference between the two. I expect the same with the Avant.

I think there are no big differences between B7 and B8 (just lights).
We need a REVOLUTION (no EVOLUTION) of the ext. design

Da Silva didn't design the A4, only the A5.
I think you need to see the car in person. It will be tataly different, also because of the longer wheelbase, and shorter front overhang. What did you want the Audi designers to do ?.
