View Full Version : re Red RS6....too obvious???

Hi All,
I have been reading the forum and have been surprised and concerned to see the comments about the RS6 being too obvious....I have one (of 25) ordered for delivery in theory in Nov/Dec in Australia.
To date, insurance purchased through Audi will only be allowed with a sattelite tracking device....The colour that I have ordered is Misano Red, however I am having second thoughts about the colour acting like a red flag to the police and to thieves.....I have a red car at the moment and some friends have red cars and we dont seem to have any problems but they are standard Aussie cars..... I dont want to be stuck with a colour that will cause unwanted attention so I am asking what members of this forum think about the problem and for example, what does the Ebony black RS6 look like in the flesh
thanks

You can also see it the other way around.

If I was a criminal I would never steal a misano red car.

Speeding in an arrest-me-red car on the other hand is another thing.

Plenty of red RS6 pics on www.rs6.com mainpage but I guess you already knew that.

Yes, true Erik....needs some thought...I saw the pics.....Is that a true representation of Misano Red?...we dont have anything to compare it with here, only a printed colour chart, and I was told it was not correct.

Getting red on photo is hard. Getting misano red is harder since it's a kind of metallic. (Benman knows the word...)

I have an Ebony Black A6 and I hate it!!!!

It is not a "true" black, more a dark, dark grey. As such, when the car even has the slightest dust on it it doesn't look very black at all. When the car is pristine clean, the color is OK, but any filth and it just looks funky IMO. I also have a Brilliant Black TTQR and that black still looks awesome even with a fair amount of dirt on it.

I have owned black cars exclusively for nearly 10 years, I tried to custom order my RS 6 in Brilliant Black but they wanted $2700US; I passed bec. I can custom order an A6 color for $1700US; therefore, I didn't take kindly to the RS gouging they were pitching.

My advice go look at a modestly dusty Ebony Black car and see if you still like the color.

Hmmm.....lol
Well I think I have decided against Misano and Ebony(thanks iconcls) and will probably go for Daytona.....We dont really have any colours here to look at, but dark pearl grey with darker widows should look good without raising red flags....Tomorrow (it is 10pm here now) I will change the colour and will read the forum before I do, so if anyone has any thoughts please feel free to express yourselves because I will appreciate all views.
thanks

With only 25 cars I'd try to stand out. I bet Daytona is the most popular. Ask the dealer what the others have chosen.

I say don't be a coward go with Misano Red!

But you are welcome here regardless of color! :addict:

Edit. I have 2 CDs with high-res pics of the misano red RS6.
If there's any special angle you want to see let me know.

Hi Erik,
Thats a lot of photos,
Do you have any of the sedan in red...Thats what Im getting, and any that show the colour in full sunlight with a front side view would be good...I am tryin to get an Idea of the colour....BTW which camera did you use ....was it a digital...some digitals saturate red a bit much....not a criticism, its just that i would take that into account if that is the case and I know which camera it is....eg, I have a Sony 707 and it tends to make red, too red
Thanks,

A sedan might be though, but I now sport auto tested one.

Most of my pics are taken with an EOS 5 (SLR)with really good lenses and then developed into CD. But a few are from a Sony 3.3 Megapix digital still camera.

Here's the post from sport auto, but pics aren't very good.

Is that about how the red looks??? I think it looks great but I'm not sure if I'm game enough....I had no doubt about Misano even yesterday, but I dont really have to decide till about 1st of July, so maybe I will wait before changing things too quickly....I really want the red but ....... Fossil,

Let me share one comment about color and thieves.

In France, we have a real plague with thugs doing car-jackings to use the cars to attack armored bank vehicles or prisons (the largest one in Paris was attacked with bazookas, AK-47 and dynamite to free an inmate about 2 months ago, it's that bad).

An RS4 was almost always involved, with and S8 or Merc ML AMG.
Other uses include high-speed drug trafficking between Spain and France.

As a result, in 2002, 12% of the RS4s in France was stolen (published data). That's one out of eight, in a single year...

Now the interesting part : I've asked an acquaintance who's a judiciary car expert -ie he's called by insurances or cops to audit stolen cars once recovered- about a trend in color or not.
His answer : out of the 10 or so RS4s he audited in a single year, they were ALL either Grey or Black.
Not a single Misano Red or Imola Yellow.

Same applies to the dozen BMW X5 4.6is he audited : grey or black.

So by going bright Red (or Yellow special order from Quattro GMBH for +/- USD 2,000), as Erik mentionned, you'll probably won't have to worry about thieves as much as all the other owners.
Thieves don't want to draw cops' attention or be easily identified in the traffic in case of pursuit/helicopter surveillance.

Between getting over-checked by cops or car-jacked/home-jacked by thugs (which may expose your loved ones), I see a no-brainer.

Eric

We have the same situation over here in Sweden - but with older Audis, such as the RS2 and the S2 Avant...
They are often used in smash and grab hits - they drive the car straight through the windows and the security gate on the stores and then they fill the car with products from the store and leave...
I'm planing to buy myself an GPS-tracking system when I buy myself a new car - so If the car is stolen I can simply track it down with a GSM-phone or a GPS-receiver. :D

While awaiting my production progress for my Misano Red RS6, you made me think about my personal decision on color. I've been a "car guy" who always thought that larger, 4 door sedans should always be black (been driving MB black S500's for last 17 years). Always felt that there was nothing prettier than a "clean/polished" black car. Unfortunately, as Iconcls stated, they look great for about the first five minutes you're driving them, and then they're dirty!!!  Three years ago, I was captivated by Millenium Yellow on a C5 Corvette. Talk about visibility issues, but I had to have one. I talked to a police officer friend and asked him if he picked on car colors (conciously or subconciously) when deciding on traffic offenses. He said that while color caught his eye, he didn't go out of his way to either segregate or enforce simply by color. His routine was to set up visible stations to observe cars that swerved, speeded, caused others to brake, etc. Not necessarily car color oriented. Further to that, my choice of color for the RS6 includes the car being in the southwest U.S. for a fair amount of time, a place where black (and darker colors) doesn't seem to be practical and where there are already (IMHO) way too many silver and white colored cars. So that kind of steered me to the red, an Audi shade I personally find very attractive. I also was influenced by a CEC website Audi (S4) in a smilar shade of red. FWIW, that's my take on it. Great color choice!!!!!!! :incar: :incar:

fossil. I'd say your fiddle is about as good as can be.

Here's a collection of Misano Red RS6 pictures. Enough? :hihi:
A few of them taken in sunlight and sunrise as you will discover.
Notice this car is debadged and has the sport exhaust. It also has the sport suspension.

I saved them in pretty large format (around 200k) since the red is easily ruined by web compresson. Modem users can download at heir own choice. :D

Hi All, it's daylight here now, and thanks everyone for your input, and Erik for the photo's...
Well, there is some food for thought.... logic is a funny thing, it is becoming clearer to me now, but living in a rural area we dont tend to hear too much about the darker side of life with regards to drug running and carjacking etc, however I think that my thoughts have been swayed back to Misano for these three reasons
1/..Yes I can see that thieves would probably shy away from a red car with it standing out prominantly from other colours.
2/.. As I said before, Myself and some of my friends drive a red car now and have no police problem, and it is difficult for the average police to note that the car is a firebreather.... I mean it does not have a huge tail gizmo...lol, which is a watch me signal as in WRX.
3/.. It looks B***dy fantastic.
Also plan to use a sattelite tracking system.
I wont let the fear of scumbags or police frighten me from doing something I have looked forward to since the S6 and RS4 appeared on the scene a few years ago.
Oh!, BTW I saw an RS4,( a rarity for country Queensland, Australia the other day, parked at the local store....I'm not sure how many hit the shores of Australia ....Its amazing how hot an RS4 Avante can look.
Thanks for your help, and if anyone else has an opinion I would love to hear it

I personally don't think it's a good thing too be a "copy-cat" but in this case.

Someone, can't remember who, made a beautiful choice of color. It was a a bit darker red, custom paint, original from BMW I think. It was sooo nice! Maybe that's a alternative?
And I bet my life on that Erik (and you other guys) know wich one I'm talking about. Link to the post? As I said, maybe he choose the color to be special so you might want to ask him? Not that it's a crime too copy but...

Yes Snow, I saw that colour, great wasn't it?. It would be great to have a choice, but I have been told that the only choices we have are in standard colours and the interior colour....I believe everything else is decided for us.... I have to check on wheels but 18"would suit here better

But Alex is living in Germany and got his car in a indivudalized color?
Maybe you should try to push your dealer a little harder and see if he can't fix that after all.

well, I originally did consider a WRX a few years ago, then the S6 came onto the market and I did think about getting an S6 and doing""something "to it, then as more money became available, I cannot go past the RS6....I t just appeals to me better that the e55 and the M5 and S type Jag....even though some folks knock the RS6 I love it and think they will be more exclusive than the other 3 with only 25 RS6 coming to Au in total...
The coming of the RS6 is just what I was waiting for....i cant procrastinate any more and also the others are not my style and to me and the M5 is a bit old now...I did want a sporty auto... sort of stealth with grunt....and thats what im getting....finally

I feel absolutely great about the color choice and thanks for asking!!! :D No tickets, yet, even with some "spirited" tollway driving, so I think my previous reflection on color choice was correct, for my situation anyhow. I keep my car pretty clean and usually get the question from other enthusiasts and friends, "so, why didn't you get a red one?" As posted in other threads, the exclusivity of the car, IMHO, does in fact make it stealthy even in red. The misano is a red that has some very minor orange in it and with the pearl "effect", seems to be a nice contrast to the silver interior I chose. Zaino really makes it look very nice and I can appreciate how it hides dust and dirt over my previous black cars.
I think you'll like it a lot. :0: Look forward to your personal impression when you get it.

Hi,
I don't know 100% for sure, but the actual delivery of the shipment of 28 or so cars (our total allotment) is due in late November....However I did notice that the safety car at the V8 supercars seems to be an Rs6....also there have been displays of Rs6 at motor shows...I would think that the Rs6 seen would either be a tricked up S6 or one of these show cars. or an example for workshop practice...who knows, but I would imagine that they will all come on one boat and not trickle in...28 is not a lot of cars..
perhaps its a private import?
I have not been notified of any change in delivery date.

Ah!,
The Touareg, what a wonderful vehicle that is with their top of the line model having that 5 litre twin turbo V10 diesel motor

Sitting proudly at the top of the Touareg range is the V10 TDI. The V10 TDI has totally changed the image of a diesel, which is not surprising from a 4x4 that develops 230 kW. An incredible 750 Nm of torque is available from just 2,000 rpm. From standstill, 100 km/h will be reached in just 7.8 seconds and a top speed of 225 km/h

this is a link to the Aussie site...lots of expanded explanation by clicking on the right hand side

http://www.volkswagen.com.au/personal/touareg/features.asp?model=V10TDI&Car=touareg

Sorry if this is a bit off topic, but I see this as another exceptional vehicle from the VW/Audi stable
